What Happened to Alyssa Thomas at Unrivaled? Digging Deeper Into Into WNBA Star’s Absence Against Phantom BC

Alyssa Thomas has always been the kind of player who makes her presence felt on the court. Whether it’s crashing the boards, orchestrating plays, or setting the defensive tone, she is the engine that keeps her team running. But when the Laces took the floor against Phantom BC on February 18, Thomas was nowhere to be seen. Her absence raised immediate questions, especially considering her role as one of the team’s most influential leaders.

As it turns out, the knee injury she suffered on January 23 has yet to fully heal—leaving both fans and teammates wondering when their captain will return. According to a recent post on X by Desert Wave Media, “Phoenix Mercury/Laces BC forward Alyssa Thomas is OUT (right leg) for the Laces tonight vs. Phantom and Phoenix Mercury/Rose BC wing Kahleah Copper (right leg) is OUT for Rose tonight vs. Vinyl.”

Although the Laces won the game 75-68 to improve to a 5-3 record, her absence was still a significant talking point. During their January 23 matchup against Phantom BC, Thomas exited in the fourth quarter after suffering a right knee injury, which she got while contesting a rebound with Rhyne Howard.

She was seen clutching her knee in visible pain before being helped off the court by a trainer. The league announced that she would be re-evaluated the following morning, but nearly a month later, she has yet to make her return.

Despite losing their captain in that game, the Laces (then 3-0) pushed through to secure an 83-79…

Mohegan, RE/MAX, and Planet Fitness: Trailblazing commerce media networks and the trends behind them

Non-retail commerce media channels typically mean payments, travel, and intermediaries that overlap with retail. But more nontraditional commerce media networks have been popping up from places like Mohegan’s casinos, RE/MAX’s real estate websites, and Planet Fitness’ gyms.

These commerce media networks don’t have retail media’s proximity to point of sale, but they do have engaged audiences, new inventory, and a valuable understanding of consumer behavior.

1. Mohegan’s casino media network

The most recent of these new retail media plays came from Mohegan, which launched what it calls the industry’s first casino media network. The ad network currently offers ads on its gambling apps and websites, with a focus on travel, restaurants within the casino, upcoming events, and nearby businesses, according to Rich Roberts, president of digital gaming at Mohegan.

Looking ahead: Mohegan hopes to show out-of-home (OOH) ads on slot machines and around casinos based on data attached to casino player cards, but the network is still determining what that will look like. “A lot of this we’re still working out,” Roberts said. “This is new and something different.”

Unique value: Brands gain legitimacy by being associated with the Mohegan brand, according to Roberts. “[If] Mohegan is partnered with this company, right away our customer is going ‘Oh, Mohegan is recommending it, we should pay attention.’”

Gaming apps and casinos are places where consumers already expect to see promotions and distractions, so new ads may not be totally unwelcome.

2. RE/MAX’s real estate media network

In another first, RE/MAX launched its real estate media network late last year, which will serve search ads for businesses related to home improvement, insurance, and safety. “We want brands that are really going to elevate us and partner with us, helping the home-buyer and seller in their journey,” said Abby Lee, executive vice president of marketing communications and events.

Fever’s DeWanna Bonner Addresses Physical Scuffle With Caitlin Clark in WNBA Playoffs

During game 2 of the Indiana Fever’s WNBA playoffs series against the Connecticut Sun, Fever superstar Caitlin Clark and former Connecticut Sun standout DeWanna Bonner got into a feisty physical exchange.

Clark took a three-point shot while being guarded by Bonner just a few minutes into the game. Clark missed the shot but thought Bonner fouled her when she attempted to land.

As a result, Clark began complaining to the referee. Bonner didn’t seem to appreciate this, as she began chirping at Clark; to which the rookie responded by shoving Bonner, which the veteran responded to by swiping Clark’s arm away from her.

The Sun ultimately won the game and the series. However, Bonner has also recently joined the Indiana Fever in free agency.

During her introductory press conference with the Fever on February 10, Bonner was asked directly about this physical exchange with Clark (while Clark was listening to her from a few feet away).

“I’m glad you asked that question because my inbox has been going crazy about that moment. But I think it’s just two competitive players that want to win and push to get over the finish line. It’s playoffs, so emotions are high, tensions are high,” Bonner said about this exchange after being asked about it directly by The Athletic staff writer James Boyd.

“But I couldn’t be more excited to step on the court with Caitlin. We actually had a great workout this morning, and I think we just feed well off of each other,” Bonner continued. “So I’m just here to hopefully give my little leadership advice, I don’t think I need to push her to be any type of player…

Busy Monday At Pocono As Season Opener Approaches

The trotters and pacers took their first 2025 spins around the five-eighths-mile oval at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania on Monday morning, Feb. 10.

The conditions were not prime with a “good” track rated at “+1” and later “+2,” but several horses showed they are ready to get the season underway, with the first card scheduled for this Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m.

Most impressive among the qualifiers was Virgo, an Always A Virgin gelding who concluded a fine 2024 with a 1:50.2 victory on closing day (Dec. 31) at Harrah’s Philadelphia. He looks to extend his form into 2025, and off a front-stepping pacing mile of :30, :58, 1:26.2, and 1:54.1 he seems well on his way to that goal for owners Mark Jakubik and Jason Darling. Virgo was driven by Jim Pantaleano and is trained by Darren Taneyhill, who doubled along with conditioners Lou Pena and Joe Skowyra.

Pantaleano (seventh in the standings at Pocono last year and a two-time winner during this qualifying session) was the only driver outside of 2024’s top five dash-winners to get home first on Monday. Braxten Boyd and Anthony Napolitano each had three triumphs (Napolitano drove the fastest trotter, the Canadian returnee Frank The Elder, who won in 1:57.3 for trainer Deborah Daguet and owner Stephen Klunowski). Meet champion Matt Kakaley had two wins, and Tyler Buter and George Napolitano Jr. each recorded a victory.

A set of six qualifiers was also drawn on Monday to be raced right back at Pocono on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. After this week, qualifiers will be held on Wednesday mornings.

During the busy morning (into afternoon) on the Pocono backstretch. Saturday’s first program of the 2025 campaign was drawn, with those horses…

Ricky de los Santos and ‘King’ Kevin Walsh Prepare for War this Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena

UNCASVILLE, CT – On Saturday, February 15, Ricky de los Santos (12-1, 3 KOs) defends his WBC US Silver Featherweight Title against unbeaten New England Super Featherweight & Lightweight Champion“King” Kevin Walsh (15-0, 8 KOs).

The pair collide on CES Boxing’s massive ‘Love & War’ card taking place at Mohegan Sun Arena and broadcast live globally on DAZN.  Tickets on sale now at CESFights.comTicketMaster or the Mohegan Sun Arena box office.

At first glance, the fighters have much in common: they have emerged as the top 2 featherweights in the northeast US, each coming off the biggest win of their respective careers last year at Mohegan Sun Arena.

De los Santos won the WBC title against Nathan Martinez via unanimous decision in February, while Walsh dispatched of Irvin Gonzalez in 4 rounds to pick up the New England Super Featherweight title in November.  They also proudly represent the fighting New England cities of Brockton, MA (Walsh) and Pawtucket, RI (de los Santos).

The pugilists recently sat down with The Final Bell podcast to discuss a showdown that many believe will steal the show on Saturday night.  They showed mutual respect and acknowledged the other’s strengths, but with emotions running high, they also traded a few barbs.

“He’s a tough fighter,” said Walsh when assessing de los Santos.  “He’s fast, he’s got skills and good footwork.  I’m looking forward to the challenge.  These are the moments I live for.”

Walsh had a late start in boxing.  The 32-year-old turned pro in 2021 and reeled off 15 victories in only 4 years.  2024 was his best year to date, as the Brockton native fought 5 times and won 2 titles.  With each outing, Walsh steadily increased his level of opposition and showed marked improvement, something that’s not lost on de los Santos.

“I know Kevin’s coming to fight,” said the…
