Michigan celebrated matching its second-highest ranking in program history earlier this week with its most-lopsided win of the season (120-50 vs Binghamton). The Wolverines will almost certainly surpass their program-best No. 4 ranking in the next poll if they emerge from their visit to Mohegan Sun this weekend unscathed. Waiting for Michigan at the world’s most famous arena under a casino in Connecticut are the reigning national champions, who haven’t missed a beat while extending their win streak, which started in February, to 20 games.
This will be Michigan’s third encounter with an opponent ranked No. 1 in the AP poll since the start of last season when it lost to South Carolina by six points to open the 2024-25 campaign and UCLA by 16 points on New Year’s Day. Big Blue is 0-3 all-time against AP No. 1 opponents, with the loss before last season coming against Iowa in 1988. By contrast, UConn is 8-1 as the No. 1 team against teams ranked as highly as Michigan over just the last 10 seasons. What a wild comparison!
