‘Vets Rock’: Mohegan Sun celebrates decade of support for veterans

Nov. 16—Hi

Uncasville — The 10th annual Vets Rock event, featuring programs aimed at improving the lives and opportunities for veterans and active-duty military personnel, took place Saturday afternoon at Mohegan Sun.

With 1,000 guests in attendance throughout the day, the event sought to connect veterans with fellow service members, service organizations, job opportunities and support resources.

The day began with an opening ceremony hosted by WTNH Channel 8 chief meteorologist Gil Simmons. The Tribal Color Guard participated in the ceremony, various speakers from Mohegan Sun’s executive team addressed the audience, and the Griswold High School choir performed a rendition of Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA.”

“We’re really excited that we’ve been able to do so much over the course of the last 10 years, and (we’re) looking forward to 10 more years,” said Jeff Hamilton, Mohegan Sun’s president and general manager.

All Paws on Deck, a non-profit dedicated to finding sheltered dogs homes, hosted an adoption event at the exposition. Todd Stiles, 39, a retired Army veteran from Oakdale, adopted Ascher, an energetic five-month-old Great Dane.

Stiles, who is attending Vets Rock for the second year in a row, says what drew him back was the sense of community and camaraderie he experiences with other veterans.

“It’s a different type of community that most aren’t used to. It’s a bunch of crazy guys and girls that love each other unconditionally. It’s great,” Stiles said. “It’s nice to know you have a network around here.”

In the main event room, Clinton-based band Bluewater Boys played upbeat, buoyant sounds as veterans communed and met with exhibitors and fellow attendees. Various organizations, including the Office of Senator Richard Blumenthal, Everlasting Veteran, LLC and the American Legion Department of Connecticut ensured veterans knew support resources were available.

Sandra Spedaliere, a retired Navy dental technician who served for 20 years, spent her…

‘Sad to see’: Fire rips through ‘historic’ Highland Golf Club in Shelton

The golf club had been gearing up to celebrate 125 years.

SHELTON, Conn. — The Highland Golf Club in Shelton was destroyed in a fire late Friday night, leaving nothing but the stone fireplace, charred propane tanks and the plot of land where the 125-year-old building once stood.

Firefighters were called to the golf course on Wooster Street just before 11:30 p.m. Friday for a report of a “well-involved” structure fire.

No one was at the golf club when firefighters responded, officials said. No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.

Fire crews had to move propane tanks that were exposed to the fire, and some of the embers from the fire caused some small brush fires in the area, according to Shelton Fire Chief Francis Jones.

“The greatest challenge was a wind-driven fire, well-advanced fire and the propane tanks exposed to the fire,” Jones said.

Crews will remain at the scene Saturday to monitor hotspots, as dry conditions and high winds continue into the weekend.

Jones added that it was “sad to see that such a nice, historic structure” was destroyed by fire, as the golf club was getting ready to celebrate 125 years.

The Fire Marshal’s Office and Shelton police and investigating the cause of the fire.

Spotlight races competitive at Pocono Downs – Harnesslink

WILKES-BARRE PA – On a cool fall afternoon at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania where the spotlight races were very competitive (four of the five harness racing features were decided by a length or less), De La Hoya Hanover (Stay Hungry) took a 1:51 decision over Seen Here in the pacing section of three $17,000 top-purse contests.

The crowd’s wagering was probably based on how each horse had done against a recent common rival named Southwind Celsius: Seen Here had gone-to-wire against “Celsius” last week, while a week before De La Hoya Hanover had to settle for a not-close second, so Seen Here was made the odds-on favorite and De La Hoya Hanover, who also had to contend with the outside post six, was the second choice.

De La Hoya Hanover was sent right to the lead by driver Matt Kakaley and put up fractions of :27.3 and :55.4, then stepped up his game when Seen Here ranged up uncovered from midpack to challenge by the 1:23.1 three quarters.

Seen Here had gone his own third split in :26.4 into some wind to gain contention and kept the heat on his rival to the line, but De La Hoya Hanover had a bit more punch coming to the finish and won by three-quarters of a length for trainer Joe Bongiorno and the ownership of Jennifer Bongiorno Stable LLC, Robert Weinstein, and Barbara Bongiorno Stable LLC.

DE LA HOYA HANOVER REPLAY

In one of the two $17,000 trots, the Walner three-year-old filly Sapphinerainstar, winless in six starts when coming to Pocono in mid-October, ran her local record to five-for-five by holding back two-holer Hankins Hanover by three-quarters of a length…

Indiana Fever Set the Record Straight With Caitlin Clark WNBA Assists Recognition

The Indiana Fever’s social media team behaves exactly like one should that has Caitlin Clark on the roster. Which means they recognize her accomplishments whenever possible. That was the case again with a recent post touting her record-breaking assists totals as a rookie.

However in this instance, the content came in sharp contrast to the botched praise by the WNBA on the previous day. Coincidental, or maybe not, the Fever made no mistake in highlighting Clark’s accomplishments.

The WNBA had put out a much maligned Clark post as part of assists week that included an inaccurate number for her record total, saying she had 321 on the season when the correct stat was actually 337. It received a community note on X and was eventually deleted.

The league’s official account followed that up by making another error, showcasing an assist from Chelsea Gray of the Las Vegas Aces. The problem was that the play, which came against the Fever, was from 2023. That was also deleted before another Gray assist was posted, also coming against Indiana.

All of this perhaps emboldened the Fever’s admin to set the record straight. The team’s…

WBS Penguins get back on track with win over Rochester

Coming off a regulation loss on Friday night in the Lehigh Valley to snap their four-game winning streak, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins turned right around and hosted the Rochester Americans on Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.

After another fast start, the Penguins held on for the win this time, 5-0.

What it means

The win improves the Penguins to 8-3-0-0 overall and 5-1-0-0 at Mohegan Sun Arena. Rocehster drops to 7-4-0-0 overall and 5-2-0-0 overall. The Penguins compete in the Atlantic Division while the Amerks are in the highly competitive North Division.

How it started

Just like Friday night when they got off to a fast start, the Penguins led, 2-0, at the end of the first period.

Corey Andonovski got the Penguins on the board at 6:33 of the first period when he scored his first goal of the season. Joona Koppanen earned his third assist on the goal while Mac Hollowell was credited with his eighth.

The first period proved a night of firsts for a pair of Penguins as Matt Nieto gave Wilkes-Barre/Scranton a 2-0 lead at 18:44 with his first goal of the season. Jonathan Gruden received his first assist of the season while Boris Katchouk got his second.

One for two

The Penguins took a 3-0 lead at 11:19 of the second period when Tristan Broz scored his fifth goal of the season. The assists went to Filip Kral, his third, and Emil Bemstrom, his eighth.

Two for three

With a three-goal lead heading to the third period, the Penguins kept the pressure on by scoring two goals, one of them on the power play, to ice the win.

Rutger McGroarty scored his first of the season at 4:23 with the assists going to Puoulin, his fifth, and Bemstrom, his ninth. That goal came on the power play.

Broz added more than enough of insurance with his second…

Minor league report: Matt Nieto scores in season debut as Penguins shut out Americans

Forward Matt Nieto scored a goal as he made his season debut for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 5-0 shutout of the Rochester Americans at Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.

Assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for conditioning purposes earlier in the day, Nieto had not played a game at any level since he skated for the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 4-2 road win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Nov. 30, 2023. A pair of knee injuries have sidelined him since then. As his NHL status is concerned, he is currently designated to long-term injured reserve.

Goaltender Filip Larsson made 36 saves to record his second shutout of the season and improved his record to 2-2-0.

Forwards Tristan Broz scored two goals for the Penguins (8-3-0) while forward Emil Bemstrom and defenseman Mac Hollowell each recorded two assists. Forward Rutger McGroarty scored his first professional goal.

Highlights:

The Penguins’ next game is a road contest against the rival Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Wednesday, 7:05 p.m.

Goaltender Sergei Murashov made 27 saves on 30 shots for the Wheeling Nailers in a 4-3 win against the Trois-Rivières Lions at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, W.Va.

The result boosted Murashov’s record to 3-2-0-0. Forward Kyle Jackson had a goal and two assists for Wheeling (5-3-1-0) while forward Mathieu De St. Phalle contributed a goal and an assist.

Highlights:

The Nailers’ next game is a home contest against the Fort Wayne Komets on Tuesday, 10:45 a.m.

Follow the Penguins all season long.
