Wilkes-Barre, PA – The local stakes season for 2-year-olds opened with a bang on the Monday (June 30) afternoon before the Fourth of July at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania, as Mr Big Spender trotted the fastest mile of the year for a baby over a 5/8-mile track, 1:54.2, when he won one of four $30,000 divisions of a Pennsylvania All-Stars event.

The Captain Corey – Reilly colt sat fourth while Dublin Hanover and then Oversear put up fractions of :28 and :57, with Mr Big Spender starting forward uncovered nearing the three-quarters in 1:25.3 and gaining through the lane. The first-over and the pacesetting Oversear were inseparable to the naked eye at the wire, but the photo finish showed Mr Big Spender more photogenic by the shortest possible margin under the urging of Matt Kakaley. (Had Oversear gotten to the wire first, he would have set a new track record for baby geldings, eclipsing the 1:54.4 mark set by Amigo Volo, who was driven by … Matt Kakaley.)

Mr Big Spender was the only one of the four All-Stars winners to have a purse race under his girth, qualifying twice freelegged and then adding hopples in a third-place finish. Now he is a season’s leader for trainer Norm Parker and owners Bart and Todd Brice.

In late 2024, Bloodywood, torchbearers and metal barrier-breakers hailing from India, teamed up with Babymetal out of Japan for the single, “Bekhauf”. They are currently on the road in the US supporting Babymetal on their headlining tour.

During their June 27th show at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT, Babymetal joined Bloodywood to perform “Bekhauf”, marking their first ever on-stage appearance together. Fan-filmed video can be viewed below.

Bloodywood issued the following statement with the release of “Bekhauf” in December 2024:

“‘Bekhauf’ means ‘fearless’ in Hindi. It was born out of the realization that fear can be seen as a choice, and that choice is our own. It’s about using this knowledge to take control of our fears and eliminate the side of them that holds us back.

It also marks our first ever collaboration. We’ve been waiting to find the right artists to work with, and when the possibility of the Babymetal collab emerged, we knew it was time. We were all fans of their music, but were still surprised by the level of synergy we managed to achieve on the track. It’s a trilingual song and features English, Hindi. and Japanese, Babymetal even sang some parts in Hindi. but we think you can feel the message regardless and that’s a testament to this synergy.

The fact that we tied it all together by creating an anime/video game hybrid video pushes everything to the next level. This is a piece of Asian metal history and we’re proud to share it with the world.”

Block Island has always been a favored destination for those who love a touch of intrigue. The tiny teardrop-shaped land mass 12 miles off the coast of mainland Rhode Island has a long and storied history with marauders wading ashore, the most famous being Captain Kidd, a privateer turned pirate who visited in 1699 in the days before his capture. He would eventually be executed in London, but not before he told the world he had left behind some buried treasure. While a piece of his fortune was found off the coast of Madagascar, the rest of it could be anywhere, even here on the island. While you’re unlikely to discover his gold, there are some modern-day treasures to discover: Eben Horton’s glass floats.

Horton is no marauder, privateer, or pirate. Rather, he’s a mild-mannered and downright friendly glassblower from Newport, just across the Block Island Sound. He didn’t mean to become a celebrity. But when he inherited a box of cracked paperweights from his mentor that were destined for a landfill, everything changed. “I filled a backpack full of these things and I hid them all along the beach,” Horton said of his first go-around with trash-turned-treasure in the late ‘90s. “And I just thought, This is gonna make some people really happy.”

Cork professional boxer Tommy ‘the Governor’ Hyde will be in action again on Saturday, June 28 when he will fight Brazilian Marcos Rodrigues in an eight-round Super Middleweight bout at the Centro de Tecnificacion Deportiva Villarreal in Spain.

Hyde’s last outing was in the Melbourne Pavilion Flemington Victoria Australia last April when he knocked out local fighter Anuary Mlawa with a very impressive performance to remain unbeaten with a record of 11-0, with eight of these fights coming by way of knockout. 

However, he has been very busy in the past 12 months with all his last four fights coming by knockout. 

He stopped German Aro Schwartz last October in the third round at the Oceanside Club in Revere Massachusetts in America and then stopped American Noah Kidd last June in the fourth round at Mohegan Sun Casino, Uncasville Connecticut Boston. 

STEPPING UP

On St Patrick’s night, he beat Waterford native Craig McCarthy to win BUI Celtic Middleweight belt at the Fox Theatre in Redwood San Francisco. 

The Governor is stepping up in class again for this fight in Spain by taking on the No 1 ranked fighter from Brazil. 

The German-based fighter Rodrigues won his first five fights. However, he suffered a setback in his last fight when was defeated in his last fight by technical knockout in the sixth round by German native Micheal Rigas at Alte Kongresshallen, Munich last month.

Tommy is expecting a large crowd of his supporters to travel to Spain for this fight and he is so excited to put in another good performance for all of them who took the trouble to fly out to see the fight.

“I’m fighting Marcos Rodrigues and he is ranked No 1 in Brazil with a record of 5-1in his career to date,” Hyde said.

Mohegan Sun has been named a top destination in Yankee Magazine’s Best of New England 2025 Travel Guide, earning two awards for its entertainment and dining offerings.

The magazine named Mohegan Sun Arena one of the “10 Best Things to Do in Connecticut This Summer” and awarded Beauty & Essex the title of “Best Immersive Dining Experience” in the state.
