George Napolitano, Jr. reclaims lead in driver standings – Harnesslink

WILKES-BARRE, PA – Harness racing driver George Napolitano Jr. teamed with the sons of Cantab Hall to sweep the $15,000 trotting features Monday afternoon (July 22) at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania, and in his season long duel with Matt Kakaley, Napolitano has reclaimed the top spot in the mountain track’s standings.

Capricious One wins the faster feature trot Tuesday at Pocono Downs (Curtis Salonick Photo)

Capricious One covered a lot of extra ground in winning the 1:54.4 faster division, being parked with cover to a :28 quarter, then making the lead not that far before a :57.1 half. The winning gelding hit the three-quarters in 1:25.4 and opened a big lead turning for home, which he needed because favored Mt Bluebird was coming on wide, making up ground with every step. But Capricious One held on by three parts of a length while taking a new mark for trainer Jenny Melander and owners Melander Racing Inc., Noonan Harness Racing LLC, and Suojalampi Stable Inc. (“Suojalampi” being a popular lake for fishing in Finland).

CAPRICIOUS ONE REPLAY

The other feature saw Napolitano bring in the sophomore gelding Soncando, who has now won two of his last three after a 1:57 victory for trainer Clifton Green and owner Robert Allison Jr. Soncando yielded to sit in the pocket, then utilized the Pocono Pike in holding off Mischievous G by a neck.

SONCANDO REPLAY

Tyler Buter and George Napolitano Jr. both won three races on the Monday card.

Tuesday’s 1 p.m. weekending card has a strong $17,000 pacing feature for developing horses that could flirt with the 1:50 mark under ideal conditions. Free Pocono programs are or will be available at www.phha.org.

Ex-NYC Exec: Son’s Death Should Exclude Mohegan’s Bid

Mohegan Sun casino

Mohegan Sun-owner Mohegan Gaming is trying to get a downstate NYC casino license, but one former state official does not think it deserves one. [Image: Shutterstock.com]

A tragic incident

In New York City, major gambling operators are vying for a lucrative casino license. Tribal organization Mohegan Gaming is one such entity, although a former city executive has argued that a personal tragedy at the tribe’s casino should exclude it from the conversation.

Kamal Bherwani worked as Chief Information Officer for Health and Human Services for former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg. His son, Ethan Bherwani, died at Mohegan Gaming’s Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut on May 18 this year.

didn’t receive any medical attention until 11 minutes after his collapse

The former NYC exec claims his son could have survived the incident had he received immediate help from staff. Instead, a video of the incident, released by the New York Post, shows Ethan falling from his blackjack chair at around 2am. He didn’t receive any medical attention until 11 minutes after his collapse.

The 22-year-old was eventually taken to hospital but was pronounced brain dead and died nine days later. He had fentanyl, cocaine, marijuana, and alcohol in his system.

Father blames casino

Bherwani has blamed Mohegan Sun for negligence in relation to his son’s death. “If they had gotten to him in three minutes, he’d be completely alive,” he told the Post. “My son was going to law school. He was cooped up during the pandemic and celebrating his graduation; he made a mistake… but it should not have cost him his life.”

A casino worker did check on Ethan after about four minutes, but from a few meters away. Once the Mohegan Tribe’s medics arrived 11 minutes…

Betting on a Closer in Jim Dandy Stakes Loaded With Speed

The $500,000, Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes Presented by Mohegan Sun at Saratoga Race Course isn’t a Grade 1 race, but the recent roster of winners reads like “who’s who” of top-class racehorses. The last three editions have been won by past or future champions Forte (2023), Epicenter (2022), and Essential Quality (2021), while the 2020 edition went to future Dubai World Cup winner Mystic Guide.

The 2024 Jim Dandy this Saturday appears primed to produce a winner of similar acclaim. Although only six horses were entered in the 1 1/8-mile race, three of them are Grade 1 winners, including one who is a champion and one who is a Triple Crown race winner. The small field notwithstanding, the Jim Dandy is shaping up as the most exciting race of the weekend.

Any analysis must begin with #6 Fierceness, the brilliant but inconsistent champion 2-year-old male of 2023. On his best day, Fierceness is fantastic — remember his championship-defining victory in the 2023 FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, in which he crushed Grade 1 winners Muth, Locked, and Timberlake by 6 1/4 lengths? And don’t forget about his demolition of the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby Presented by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms at Xalapa, in which he defeated eight opponents by a record-breaking 13 1/2 lengths.

But Fierceness doesn’t always produce his top-tier effort. In the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes last fall, he started as a heavy favorite but faded badly to finish seventh. In between the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Florida Derby, he was beaten to third place in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes. And though…

Man, 28, fatally shot in head outside his Bronx home by mugger

A 28-year-old man was fatally shot outside his Bronx home by a mugger early Tuesday — one of four bloody shootings in a 12-hour span that left six people wounded, cops said.

Idriss Cherif El Farissy was shot in the head outside his home on E. 176th St. near Mohegan Ave. near Crotona Park just before 3 a.m., cops said. The gunman was seen rifling through El Farissy’s pockets before running off.

El Farissy died at the scene. His killer has not been caught.

NYPD officers and members of the crime scene unit investigate the murder of Cherif Elsarissy, 28, on E. 176th St. near Mohegan Ave. Tuesday, July 23, 2024 in The Bronx, New York. (Barry Williams for New York Daily News)NYPD cops investigate the fatal shooting on E. 176th St. near Mohegan Ave. in the Bronx on Tuesday. (Barry Williams for New York Daily News)

Residents who knew El Farissy said the victim’s family hails from Morocco. His parents currently live in Brooklyn but he lived in the Bronx with his girlfriend.

On Tuesday morning his home was roped off by yellow police tape. Seven evidence markers encircled a dried pool of blood where El Farissy was shot.

The victim’s brother said the family was too distraught and “not up to” talking to reporters Tuesday.

El Farissy’s slaying was one of four shootings within 12 hours in the Bronx that began about 3:30 p.m. Monday when two men, ages 18 and 67, were shot near E. 145th St. and Third Ave. in Mott Haven.

The two victims were with a group when the gunman ran up and started firing. Both men were hit in the legs. An errant bullet also hit the window of an occupied MTA bus, but no one on the bus was hurt, according…

10 Hudson Valley Non-Profits Get An Infusion Of New State Funds

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Albany has made funds available to help struggling Westchester and Putnam County residents thrive.

NYS Senator Pete Harckham announced that in an end-of-year resolution in the State Senate, $464,500 was set aside for youth workforce training and community programs in Westchester and Putnam Counties.

“The investments we have made in these important community programs are the result of hearing from different municipal officials and nonprofit stakeholders about the necessary resources required to support the work they are doing,” Harckham said. “Many of these nonprofit organizations operate on shoestring budgets—and yet accomplish so much; they are on the frontlines in so many important areas. I am glad to have secured this funding because these programs will help empower residents and benefit them in so many ways. Each of these recipients is deserving of our support, and I thank Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins for acknowledging the impact of their work in our communities.”

The recipients of the funding are:

  • CAREERS Support Solutions: $85,000 for Operations and Educational Programs
  • Sickle Cell Awareness Foundation Corp. International: $80,000 for Operations and Research
  • Neighbor’s Link, Inc.: $57,500 for Legal Services to Immigrant Community
  • City of Peekskill: $50,000 for Workforce Training programs focusing on young adults and gun violence prevention
  • Hope’s Door, Inc.: $50,000 for Crisis Response, Outreach Expenses
  • Putnam / Northern Westchester Women’s Resource Center: $50,000 for Advocacy Outreach
  • My Brother Vinny, Inc.: $50,000 for Operations, Storage Costs and Vehicle Maintenance
  • Ossining Padres Hispanos, Inc.: $25,000 for Operations and Vocational Training
  • Prevention Council of Putnam, Inc.: $7,000 for Operations and Educational Programs
  • Washington Rochambeau Revolutionary Route – NY, Inc.: $10,000 for Rochambeau Festival in Yorktown’s Rochambeau Park

The funding comes from several areas in the enacted FY2024-2024 State Budget, including the Division of Criminal Justice Services, the Division of Housing and Community Renewal, the Department of Health, the Department of Labor, the…

It’s all the big things this week in CT from blink-182 to Phish to Jerry Seinfeld

The 1960s British teen idol Peter Noone is now a septuagenarian. So is Vicki Lawrence, who has been playing one (“Mama”) since the 1970s.

Also in Connecticut this week, a Sammy Hagar/Loverboy tour recalls the 1980s. Southern California skate punks blink-182 evoke the 1990s and 2000s. Then there’s Phish, whose jams have gone on for decades.

The music goes round and round right up to up-and-comers like Tracheotomy and newly minted arena-filling stars like Billy Strings.

On the comedy front, besides Lawrence there’s Jerry Seinfeld and what might be the last live stand-up go-round for Bill Maher.

You might forget what year it is, but you’ll have a great week.

Boston Rocks first at Pocono Tuesday – U.S. Trotting News

Boston Rocks first at Pocono Tuesday

July 16, 2024, by PHHA for Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania

Wilkes-Barre, PA – A fierce summer storm swept through northeast Pennsylvania just before the $17,000 featured pace at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania Tuesday(July 16) afternoon, causing a delay before the race. But when the feature field did come to the track, the Boston Red Rocks sophomore colt Boston Rocks showed no ill effects from being kept waiting, coming his last half in :54.4 to lower his mark to 1:51.4 despite the “sloppy” going.

Boston Rocks came home powerfully to win Tuesday’s Pocono feature. Curtis Salonick photo.

Last year’s New York Sire Stakes champion went to the front for driver Jason Bartlett nearing the :27.3 quarter, and against a hard wind backed the half down to :57. The tempo picked up as the winner’s main rival Arbitrage Hanover, off a 51-day layoff, made an uncovered move to go at the leader to the 1:24.3 three-quarters, but around the far turn the first-over horse made a break, and Boston Rocks put in a :27.1 last quarter to win by 7-1/2 lengths. Mike Deters trains the winner of $435,467 for owners Rick Berks and Peter Blood.

The rain soon let up, but it had fallen so hard so fast that after only one more race the track was declared not safe for racing, wiping out the last three races of the day.

Back before the moisture came down, a pair of 3-year-old pacers, the Captaintreacherous gelding Vengeance Blue Chip and the Stay Hungry filly Staying With Emily, won $15,000 co-features in the identical time of 1:52.

Both sophomores won by a nose – Vengeance Blue Chip just catching Dublin…
