BKFC 61 airs live from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT on Saturday, May 11. Headlining the bare knuckle boxing fight card, Jimmie Rivera of Ramsey, NJ and Daniel Straus of Cincinnati, OH square off at featherweight.

Pro football, from modest beginnings, had taken precarious root in the mid-1920s, but it had yet to spread much beyond the Midwest, and had yet to convince many of the biggest college stars of the day to make a career of it.

Then along came Red Grange, a household name at Illinois. After his final college game in 1925, the powerful runner signed a contract with the Chicago Bears that would vault the NFL into the country’s sports consciousness. He didn’t play long, in Chicago or New York, and purists looked down upon the spectacle of college hero playing in what was considered a roguish brand of football. Grange made it respectable.

But Grange’s first game drew 40,000, and crowds built during a barnstorming tour. In December 1925, nearly 70,000 showed at the Polo Grounds in New York to see Grange play and possibly save the struggling, new franchise called the Giants. Pro football was around to stay.

Every so often, an athlete comes along that combines must-see skill, dynamic personality and some hard-to-define “it factor” to change the trajectory of a sport or a league. Before Grange, Babe Ruth completely changed the way baseball was played and the fans clearly approved. Decades after Grange, Joe Namath made pro football prime-time entertainment. There were great, popular golfers before and after Tiger Woods, great basketball players before and after Michael Jordan, but each brought new levels of popularity to their sports.

Such athletes have become rare, as nearly all sports have settled into their place in American consciousness.

UNCASVILLE, CT – With the 2024 legislative session in the rearview mirror, the Connecticut Democratic Party held its state convention Saturday at Mohegan Sun and nominated US Sen. Chris Murphy for a third term.

The party also re-elected its two Democratic National Committee members, Marti Carlson and John Olson, and chose seven presidential electors for November: Dorothy Grady, David Kostek, Tiffani McGinnis, Mike Pohl, Geraldo Reyes, Kevin Sullivan, and Nick Balletto.

In her opening remarks, Nancy DiNardo, the state party chair, called the upcoming election “one of the most important elections in our lifetimes.”

Her message was echoed by the rest of the speakers at the event, including Murphy, who said he never takes anything for granted.

“I’m going to campaign hard from here until November and try to bring as many Democrats along with me as I can,” Murphy said. “I’m excited to be on the ballot. A lot of people may not vote. Why? I hope people understand the stakes of this election. I know a lot of people are frustrated by what’s happening overseas. But when I talk to young people, they are also really concerned about what would happen to the safety of our streets if a Republican Congress repeals the 2022 Gun Bill. They are very concerned about losing their ability to have access to the full range of reproductive health care services.”

Murphy also recognized fellow Democrat Congresswoman Jahana Hayes and said when it comes to campaigning, he’s there for everyone.

It appears there may be some behind-the-scenes fallout from the Bellator 289 main event.

Raufeon Stots (19-1 MMA, 7-0 BMMA) beat Danny Sabatello (13-2 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) with a split decision this past Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. Stots went into the fight as the interim bantamweight champion and retained that belt with the win. He also moved on to the $1 million final of Bellator’s 135-pound grand prix tournament.

Stots’ win might not have been a huge surprise on paper – he was the betting favorite. But the wide disparity of scores had just about every observer scratching their heads. Stots got 48-47 scores from judges Eric Colon and Bryan Miner. But judge Doug Crosby gave the fight to Sabatello – and gave him all five rounds for a 50-45 score.

And that 50-45 score apparently was enough to trigger Mike Mazzulli, the commission director for the Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulations, to schedule a review of the fight with all three judges. The news first was reported by MMA Fighting.

“After reviewing the fight, three rounds of the five rounds were extremely close and the other two were marginally close rounds,” Mazzulli said, according to the report. “One judge had Sabatello winning all five rounds, which is controversial. But ultimately Stots won the decision, which is the correct result. In an effort to make this a learning moment, I have informed all three judges we will be reviewing the fight together.

“This is a very serious situation. The Mohegan Tribe Athletic Department always looks out for the best interests of all fighters. In the past the Mohegan Tribe Athletic Department has sanctioned officials that are not performing to the level that is required. Such sanctions, when they occur, are not made public.”
