Dribbling Bi holds on in Pocono Trot feature

WILKES-BARRE, PA – Dribbling Bi (Cantab Hall) established early command in the $15,000 trotting harness racing feature on Monday afternoon at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono, then kept the lead to the wire while lowering his mark to 1:56.

Dribbling Bi (#5) holds on at the wire in the feature trot at The Downs (Curtis Salonick Photo)

The sophomore gelding was three-wide early as Argento to his immediate inside made the lead on the first turn, then went up in the two-path to take over the racetrack before the :27.4 quarter.

Trainer/driver Jeff Gregory was able to give the favored three-year-old a breather to the half, reached in :58, then accelerated the throttle as second choice In A Tiny Way started up to challenge towards the 1:26.4 three-quarters.

In A Tiny Way proceeded on gamely, but it was Argento who gave Dribbling Bi the hardest time in stretch, scoring over the potential pocket rocket by half a length, with In A Tiny Way another neck back in third. Jeff Gregory Inc. and Jesmeral Stable share ownership of the winner.

DRIBBLING BI REPLAY

Marcus Miller had four winners on the day, two for trainer/father Erv Miller. Steve Smith guided three horses home first, all trotters, and two for trainer Karen Garland.

Racing resumes Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 pm; program pages are available by clicking here.

The track has plans for Saturday, August 20 in high gear, as many of North America’s top horses will be coming to town for the $2 million Sun Stakes Saturday, the main features being rich stakes events for all four divisions of three-year-olds, plus an Invitational on each gait for the fastest older horses.

Bet Eightthirtyone beats the rainclouds – and feature opponents

WILKES-BARRE, PA – Bet Eightthirtyone (Betting Line) stormed home in the deep Pocono Pike to win the $13,000 harness racing pacing feature on Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 2) at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono in 1:55.1.

The race was conducted as a downpour came through the area; though the rain soon stopped, this would be the last event before the track was rerated from “fast” to “sloppy.”

Bet Eightthirtytwo and driver Marcus Miller (Curtis Salonick Photo)

Marcus Miller got the victorious gelding away third as Mister David C set the pace ahead of favored Stormy Beach, with second choice Letmecallyouback advancing via the always-tough tuck-then-first-over route and Ripplesonthebeach right on his back.

As they turned for home, Stormy Beach ducked to the inside of the pacesetter, but it soon became clear that the horse with the most pace was the one right behind him, as Bet Eightthirtyone gave a sharp burst when shown inside clearance and reached the wire three-quarters of a length ahead of Ripplesonthebeach, the only other horse moving with real velocity late.

BET EIGHTTHIRTYONE REPLAY

Marcus Miller’s father Erv trains the winner, who notched his first success of the season while missing his lifetime best by only a tick for owner D R Van Witzenburg. The gelding is three-for-18 lifetime with $32,584 in earnings.

The sky was sunny, though the track remained sloppy, by the time that No Drama Please (Trixton) accounted for the $12,500 co-featured trot, brushing to the lead in front of the stands and keeping control for a 1:55 victory.

Tom Fanning trains the gelding, now a winner of $396,838, for owner Joseph Smith. For driver George Napolitano Jr., the victory was one of four on the day.

Ticket On Sale Date Announced for WHERE WE BELONG at Seattle Rep

Seattle Rep today announced complete casting and the single ticket on sale date for their season opening production of playwright Madeline Sayet‘s, Where We Belong. Starring Madeline Sayet (Executive Director, Yale Indigenous Performing Arts Program; Playwright – Up and Down the River, Antigone or And Still She Must Rise Up) and under the direction of Mei Ann Teo (Associate Artistic Director and Director of New Work at Oregon Shakespeare Festival), Seattle Rep is thrilled to give their audiences a chance to witness this insightful journey across geographic borders, personal history, and cultural legacies in search of a place to belong. Single tickets will go on sale August 8 at 12:00 p.m. PT online at SeattleRep.org, or by calling the Patron Services Office at 206.443.2222.

In Where We Belong, Mohegan theater-maker Madeline Sayet travels to England in 2015 to pursue a PhD in Shakespeare. Madeline finds a country that refuses to acknowledge its ongoing role in colonialism, just as the Brexit vote threatens to further disengage the UK from the wider world. In this exhilarating solo piece, Madeline echoes a journey to England braved by Native ancestors in the 1700s following treatise betrayals – and forces us to consider what it means to belong in an increasingly globalized world.

Watch the trailer below!

Madeline Sayet (she/her) serves as an Assistant Professor at Arizona State University with the Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (ACMRS) and is the Executive Director of the Yale Indigenous Performing Arts Program (YIPAP). She has been honored as a Forbes 30 Under 30 in Hollywood & Entertainment, TED Fellow, MIT Media Lab Director’s Fellow, National Directing Fellow, Drama League Director-In-Residence, NCAIED Native American 40 Under 40, and a recipient of The…

The Somerville Times Historical Fact of the Week – August 3

Eagle Feathers #259 – Busby

By Bob (Monty) Doherty

William Berkeley Enos was born in Los Angeles on November 29, 1895, to thespian parents. His father was an actor, and his mother was an actress and choreographer. Upon his father’s death, he was placed in boarding schools, the longest being a five-year run at the Mohegan Lake Military Academy in Peekskill, New York. After graduation, he worked at a shoe company for three years in Athol, Massachusetts.

In 1917 with America in World War I, his call to serve was instilled by his Mohegan Lake training, and he enlisted in the Army at Fort Banks in Winthrop, Massachusetts, before going to France. As a young Lieutenant, he was attached to the 312th Field Artillery Battalion, composed of six batteries and 1,200 men. He supervised close order allied drills and formations for French and American soldiers.

He was a natural at this and masterfully exercised troops in circles, columns, grids, and parades with once commanding a trick drill with 1,200 soldiers in silent maneuvers. Volunteering as an Army Air Corps spotter, he observed and reported panoramic troop movements and fighting patterns from high elevations. The knowledge he gained from this would serve him well in his after-military life.

Vaudeville in America was an early 20th century entertainment where popular specialty acts, such as comedy, slapstick, pantomime, and song and dance acts were featured. In 1915, vaudeville shows at the Somerville Theatre were the stock trade of the burgeoning Somerville Players and other song and dance troopers.

One of the players who danced across her floor was Ray Bolger who was remembered for his roles in Babes in Toyland, April in Paris, The Great Ziegfeld and most of all as the…
