PENGUINS TAKE BACK PLAYOFF SPOT BY ROUTING ISLES, 9-2

BOXSCORE

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins delighted a packed house at Mohegan Sun Arena with a dominant, 9-2 victory over the Bridgeport Islanders on Saturday night.

With playoff position hanging in the balance, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (30-27-4-4) unloaded a franchise record-tying nine goals. Seven different Penguins accounted for those nine goals, and 15 different players recorded at least one point in the rout of their division rival.

Bridgeport managed to score the game’s first two goals, with Austin Czarnik and Chris Terry burying both of the Islanders’ tallies.

After that, it was all Penguins…

Alex Nylander started the frenzy at 13:48 of the first period. The Penguins then flipped their 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead by generating three goals in 1:30 of game time during the second period. Sam Poulin tied things up at 5:43 of the middle frame, followed by a strike from Jamie Devane 20 seconds later. Less than a minute after that, Félix Robert put the Pens up by two.

After that three-goal outburst, Bridgeport called its timeout. The break did little to stop the unrelenting pressure of the home team, who continued to run up the score.

Kyle Olson got in on the fun after he forced a neutral-zone turnover and finished with a backhand shot past Islanders goalie Jakub Škarek. Olson’s goal came with 4:05 left in the second stanza, and then Michael Chaput tacked on another with 2:10 remaining.

The Islanders switched goalies at the start of the third period, but it still resulted in more Penguins goals. Drew O’Connor beat backup Ken Appleby through the five-hole 28 seconds into the final frame.

Poulin notched his second of the night at 7:26 of the third period, and then O’Connor rounded out the nine-goal outing…

Penguins match franchise scoring record in 9-2 rout of Bridgeport

They’re in the endgame now.

The Penguins and Bridgeport Islanders have only four weeks to settle who grabs a playoff spot in the Atlantic Division, and a near-record performance by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton dealt a major blow on Saturday.

Playing in front of a capacity crowd on Marvel Super Hero Night, the Penguins tied the franchise mark with nine goals in an eventual 9-2 rout of the Islanders at Mohegan Sun Arena.

The teams entered the night virtually even in percentage points, making the game the biggest the Penguins have had all season. With the win, WBS improved to 30-27-4-4 and took hold of the Atlantic’s sixth and final postseason berth. Better yet, it moved only one point off rival Hershey for fourth place and into a near-tie with Hartford for fifth.

“It’s hard to look at any one player in the lineup and say we could have gotten more,” Penguins head coach J.D. Forrest said. “Top to bottom, a really good effort from goaltending down.

“As the game went on, we just picked it up. Just started really bearing down on pucks and getting some traffic and mayhem around the net.”

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton fell behind, 2-0, in the first but quickly regrouped with a goal from Alex Nylander at 13:48.

Then that momentum carried into the second in a big way. With the help of a few adjustments during the break to combat Bridgeport’s puck retrievals, the Penguins broke the game open with five goals in a span of 12 minutes. Sam Poulin started the surge at 5:43, and Jamie Devane took advantage of a turnover by Bridgeport goaltender Jakub Skarek for his third of the year to put them ahead for good.

Felix Robert, Kyle Olson and Michael Chaput all scored soon after, and WBS kept its foot on the gas with three more goals in the third on…

Chris Rock’s Tour Is Coming to Mohegan Sun

Comedian Chris Rock is on tour after the infamous slap during the Oscars Sunday and that tour will be coming to Connecticut.

Rock’s “Ego Death World Tour 2022” will be coming to Mohegan Sun Arena in June. Tom Cantone, president of sports and entertainment for Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment, said ticket sales have been strong but tickets are available.

Rock was in Boston Wednesday for his first comedy show since Will Smith confronted him on the Oscars stage after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who shaved her head after suffering from alopecia.

After a standing ovation that lasted for minutes, Rock asked the roaring crowd, “how was your weekend?” and said he was still “processing what happened” at the Academy Awards.

More people are talking about Jada Pinkett-Smith and alopecia after the viral incident between Will Smith and Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards. Black women are more likely to get alopecia overall, and there are multiple forms of the condition. But any forms of alopecia can complicate a Black woman’s body image and sense of self. Dermatologist Dr. Meena Singh & Dr. Afiya Mbilishak, a hair stylist and psychologist, joined LX News to explain more.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences said Wednesday that Smith was asked to leave the Oscars after hitting Rock but he refused.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences board of governors met Wednesday to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Smith for violations against the group’s standards of conduct.

They said Smith has the opportunity to defend himself in writing before the board meets again on April 18.

The academy also said disciplinary action for Smith could include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.

Tribe supports Connecticut city’s Red Raiders’ nickname

The tribe says it supports the use of those images “as a public means of sustaining Native American culture and history of Connecticut’s first citizens,” according to the March 15 resolution from the tribal council.

Story continues below advertisement

Derby Board of Education Chair Jim Gildea said city officials sat down with tribal leaders, including Schaghticoke Chief Richard Velky, to discuss the issue. He said the city explained the images are meant to honor the area’s Native American heritage. He also said the term “Red Raiders” has nothing to do with skin color.

“It’s similar to the Duke Blue Devils, the Tulane Green Wave,” he said. “Through the years, people may have lost sight of that, but Derby High School’s colors are red and white.”

The state last year enacted a law that requires municipalities whose athletic teams use Native American names or mascots to receive written support from a state or federally recognized tribe in Connecticut or risk losing state grants derived from revenue at the state’s two tribal casinos, The Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Story continues below advertisement

Most of Connecticut’s 169 cities and towns receive a grant from the Mashantucket Pequot/Mohegan Fund, with extra money earmarked for communities located near the gaming centers. The amounts are based on a formula that involves a number of factors, including the value of untaxable property within the community. Payments are made three times a year and can total as much as $5 million or more for the larger cities.

The Schaghticokes do not contribute to the fund, but Gildea said that should not matter.

“We should not cherry pick which Native American, state-recognized tribe we decide to give the ability to grant waivers to,” he said. “They are all honorable, decent tribes who are state recognized and that should be the only litmus test.”

Kolbe Cathedral’s Pfohl attempting to win state titles in four decades

When he steps on the floor at the Mohegan Sun Arena Saturday afternoon, John Pfohl will have coached in a state championship in his fourth different decade.

With a win against No. 3 seed Hand on Saturday in the Division III state final, top seed Kolbe Cathedral will have won a state title in those four different decades under Pfohl, who won titles in 1999, 2004 and 2018. The first two were at Central Connecticut State University’s Kaiser Hall, the last one at Mohegan.

“The first time I went, it was a completely new experience. I reached out to some coaching friends of mind who had been there before to know what to expect at Central,” Pfohl said. “It has now become an event, the entire experience, From walking into the Mohegan Sun to the locker rooms, to underneath the tunnel coming out into the arena is something you need to experience. It’s awesome.”

This is Pfohl’s seventh state championship game in two tours of duty with the Cougars. The first one was from 1993-2008. He returned for the 2017-18 season and won the Division IV title over Rocky Hill that season. Pfohl won his 400th game in the quarterfinals on Monday.

“Our goal, quite frankly, is to be practicing on the last day of the season. Whenever that is, we want to be practicing,” Pfohl said. “We understand the tradition and try to continue it.”

Pfohl said he never played in a state championship game himself. But his counterpart on Saturday has.

Jimmy Economopoulos is coaching in his first state championship game at Hand. In 2008, he was a junior…

The difference was simple: Capital Prep just too good

UNCASVILLE — You can bat around the X’s and O’s if you want. You can point to nerves and focus on the outstanding play of Abby Hurlbert (28 points, 10 rebounds) and a very competitive second half. It all has its place. Heck, you can even throw in the “no death certificate, no foul” demeanor of the game.

But Capital Prep’s 84-55 victory over Thomaston before 4,486 fans for the Class S girls basketball state title Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena can be reduced to this: bigger, faster, stronger and much better. Simple? Yes. Too simple? Not hardly.

The No. 3 Bears (23-3) knew all about Capital’s numbers — the 65-point average margin of victory in the tournament, the 47-point average margin of victory in the regular season, the only two losses coming to New York City teams, the state’s No. 1 ranking.

Yet, they believed, like any champion would. Then they found that Capital might even be better than all the well-deserved hype. They found out Capital has no respect for the movie “Hoosiers” and doesn’t really believe that David ever laid a glove on Goliath, let alone a stone from a sling.

The Bears packed the pride of a champion and a rock solid belief that they could handle this challenge. They practiced against the boys, they tried to prepare for the size and quickness that the regular season didn’t offer. In the end, it just wasn’t the real thing. Capital Prep was.

“No doubt they are a machine,” said Thomaston coach Bob McMahon. “They are more finely tuned than we had hoped. They are more skilled than I realized. They are relentless on the boards. And I said before the game that the more threes they shoot, the better for…
