Walner filly stays undefeated in $50,000 Weiss Final

WILKES-BARRE, PA – Kaddari, a Walner filly who started her career with victories in the last two prelims of the Bobby Weiss Series for three-year-old trotting fillies, added the $50,000 Weiss Championship to her rapidly-growing resume on Tuesday afternoon (May 2) at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania. The $375,000 yearling stopped the timer in 1:56 on a cool day with a strong stretch headwind.

Director of Racing Rick Kane presents the Championship trophy to Team Melander after Kaddari won (Curtis Salonick Photo)

Mattias Melander got away second with Kaddari, then moved nearing the :28 quarter and stepped around A Good Chardonnay, keeping Quite Fast parked in the two-wide lane through fractions of :57 and 1:26.1. Into the wind driver Melander asked his filly for more, and she responded to be 2½ lengths clear of Over Board, who circled five-wide in the stretch and passed many horses. But she didn’t get past Kaddari, who is trained by Mattias’s brother Marcus Melander and is owned by Courant Inc.

KADDARI REPLAY

The $20,000 Weiss Consolation fell to the Muscle Hill filly I’m Amused in a lifetime best of 1:57. Simon Allard popped the pocket with the sophomore down the backstretch and opened a big lead that could not be threatened through the stretch. Deborah Daguet trains the improving winner for D Racing Stable Inc., Kapildeo Singh, and Earl Hill Jr.

I’M AMUSED REPLAY

Marcus Miller led all Pocono drivers Tuesday with three sulky successes.

The Downs will not present a live program this Saturday, Kentucky Derby Day. Racing returns on Sunday at 6 p.m. with the first stakes action of the year at Pocono, four $30,000 divisions of a Pennsylvania All-Stars event for three-year-old pacing fillies, a…

Snowman Hanover upsets in $50,000 Weiss final

Ray Schnittker

WILKES-BARRE, PA – Snowman Hanover (Bar Hopping) showed last Sunday he appreciated his reintroduction to harness racing trotting hopples with a victory in the Bobby Weiss Series final prelim for his sophomore male group, and in Sunday’s (April 30) $50,000 Weiss Championship he again was victorious, taking his field coast-to-coast in 1:58 over a sloppy track during a rainy night.

Mark MacDonald got the 9-1 gelding to the lead before the :28.3 quarter, then backed off the half to :59.4. Bestfriend Volo, the favorite who had won both of his Weiss prelims, moved out to go after the leader through both sides of the 1:29.1 three-quarters, but Snowman Hanover dug in gamely and held off the chalk by half a length. He paid $21.80 to win. The Ray Schnittker trainee is owned by the partnership of Schnittker Bordogna, Arden Homestead Stable, Steven Arnold, and Ted Gewertz, and he helped driver MacDonald to lead the local colony on the night with three successes.

SNOWMAN HANOVER REPLAY

A $15,000 pace for developing horses headlined the action on that gait, with Beach Vibes (American Ideal) never looking back as he came within a tick of his mark with a 1:52.4 off-track victory for driver Braxten Boyd. The gelding has now won three of his last four while ascending the class ladder. Bruce Lauer conditions the sharp sidewheeler for It’s All Good Racing LLC.

BEACH VIBES REPLAY

C Is For Cookie was the only horse to win in all three Weiss preliminaries for her group, and the sophomore pacing filly will be starting from the rail as she goes for the Weiss Grand Slam in her $50,000 Championship event during Monday’s 1 p.m. card. Program pages for…

Longshots take both Weiss Series divisions

WILKES-BARRE, PA – A pair of 13-1 longshots won their $20,000 third and final preliminary harness racing divisions of the Bobby Weiss Series at Pocono Downs for three-year-old trotting colts at Mohegan Pennsylvania on a cool Sunday night (April 23).

Wentworth Hanover and driver Braxten Boyd getting up right on the wire (Curtis Salonick Photo)

Braxten Boyd’s 13-1 winner wasn’t as surprising as it might be otherwise, as the 23-year-old rising star added $28.20 Wentworth Hanover to Sunday victories with $42.20, $28.40, $11.60 and $11.20 shots. Wentworth Hanover, an International Moni gelding trained by Clifton Green for the LCT Stable, got the best post draw of his five-race career and made the most of it, closing for a neck victory over G Load while breaking his maiden in 1:56.2. Favored Moni Book, off wins in the first two legs, set the pace but had to settle for third, a half-length back.

WENTWORTH HANOVER REPLAY

Mark MacDonald used opposite tactics with 13-1 shot Snowman Hanover, and the Bar Hopping gelding drew away in the last quarter while lowering his mark to 1:55.4. Ray Schnittker trains the winner for
Schnittker Bordogna, Arden Homestead Stable, Steven Arnold, and Ted Gewertz. Next week’s $50,000 Weiss Championship for this division now looks more wide-open than it did entering the evening.

SNOWMAN HANOVER REPLAY

Top pacing events on the night card were a pair of $16,500 contests for the highest-priced claiming horses on the grounds. And the hottest claimer on the grounds, the Art Official gelding Park Official, rolled to his seventh straight victory in one division, charging up the inside as the pocket rocket for a 1:53 win for driver Anthony Napolitano (one behind Boyd with four winners on…

Mashantucket-Mohegan Fund grants would more than double in 2025-26

Apr. 24—Municipalities’ share of the gaming revenues the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes pay the state would more than double under a bill advanced last week by the legislature’s Appropriations Committee.

The panel voted unanimously to increase the amount transferred annually from the state’s General Fund to the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Fund ― starting with the 2025-26 fiscal year ― to $139,380,000. The money comes from the state’s 25% share of the slot-machine revenue the tribes’ respective casinos ― Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun ― generate.

In recent years, the fund has plateaued at $51.5 million.

The increase endorsed by the Appropriations Committee as part of Raised Bill No. 1213 would restore the fund to its highest level since the 1999-2000 fiscal year, when $135 million was distributed to the state’s 169 cities and towns in the form of grants.

“We’ve been trying to build it back to what it was originally intended to be,” state Sen. Cathy Osten, the Sprague Democrat who co-chairs the committee, said of the fund. “By 2025-26, most towns will have used up their ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funds, and the increase in the grants will help bridge the gap.”

Osten has sought to increase the grants since before the state’s 2021 legalization of online casino gaming and sports betting, forms of gambling that have generated additional revenues for the tribes and the state.

The ARPA grants were intended to offset economic losses associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both of the casino-owning tribes expressed support for the bill bolstering the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Fund.

“With new revenues from sports betting and internet gaming coming in above and beyond projections, now is the time to restore the fund to its previous levels in recognition that our employee base hails from almost every city and town in the state and that our vendor…

Southwind Dredge wins Series final; Weiss filles impress – U.S. Trotting News

Southwind Dredge wins Series final; Weiss filles impress

April 24, 2023, by PHHA for The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono

Wilkes-Barre, PA – On a Monday (April 24) afternoon at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania where horses racing up front did not do too well late, the best illustration of that concept came in the $20,000 Championship of the Game Of Pacing Claims Series for $10,000-base claimers, where Southwind Dredge was last at every call but the most important one, thundering by his field to reach the wire first in 1:54.2.

The favored Globaldomination N went to the lead and set a moderate pace, but watching the far turn it was evident that much of the power was out very wide on that bend. Southwind Dredge was widest of all, five-deep as they swung for home, and he was full of pace to defeat Riot, who also closed well but not as well as the winning son of Bettor’s Delight, by a length. Tyler Buter drove the winner for trainer Jason Brewer and owner Barry Franklin.

C Is For Cookie completed a sweep of her three preliminaries in her Weiss Series division for pacing fillies with a 1:52.2 success in her $20,000 division for trainer Linda Toscano and Birnam Wood Farms. The Betting Line filly, out of the dam of Sweet Lou and Bettors Sweet, has been a push-button horse for driver Scott Zeron, responding to requests for a bit more with long and powerful strides.

Relentless Julie tried to equal C Is For Cookie as a Weiss prelim sweeper, but Lodestar beat her out by…
