Connecticut’s ‘time of reckoning’ with a colonial hero’s horrific past

MARK PAZNIOKAS :: CTMIRROR.ORG

The statue of John Mason above the north steps of the Connecticut Capitol.

A commission responsible for the restoration and preservation of the state Capitol was asked Thursday to return a verdict: Is John Mason, a founder of the Connecticut Colony, guilty of a 17th Century war crime and unworthy of contemporary honor?

A marble statue of Mason stands in a niche high above the north steps of the Capitol, clutching a sword and gazing over Bushnell Park. To its right, a stone carving depicts the attack he led against a fortified Pequot village in 1637.

Historians say 400 Pequots were massacred, including 175 women and children, many burned to death when the village was set afire. English soldiers and Mohegan and Narragansett allies fired on those who fled the flames, eradication the goal.

“Under today’s standards, John Mason would be charged with war crimes and prosecuted accordingly,” said Rodney Butler, chairman of the Mashantucket Pequots. “I ask you: Is this a man who we should celebrate in this great state of Connecticut?”

Over two hours, historians, an anthropologist, members of the Mohegan, Eastern Pequot and Mashantucket Tribes and one descendant of Mason took turns talking about racism and erasure, the complexities and horrors of the Pequot War, and the opportunities and necessity of finding meaning in history. Some appeared by Zoom, others in person at the Legislative Office Building. Butler’s message came in a recorded video.

The state historian, Walter Woodward, recommended Mason remain in his niche, his presence an opportunity to teach visitors and remind the leaders who work in the Capitol about a bloody history that resonates through the centuries.

“As state historian,…

Mohegan Gaming Officially Done With Greek Casino Project

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE) announced Friday that it had withdrawn its plans to create a casino in Greece. The former Hellinikon airport plot in southern Athens has been the target for the new Inspire Athens, and MGE was chosen to operate the casino following a heated contest with Hard Rock International. MGE might continue as an advisor, but the company’s exit could also give Hard Rock new opportunities in Greece.

MGE Backs Off Greek Casino Plans

MGE released an announcement late last week, explaining that it had conducted an extensive review of its operations and future obligations against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. It stated, “We concluded that we would not continue to pursue the concession rights for the Athens project.”

The operator added, “We are also focused on the large undertaking at Inspire Korea, which will consume the next few years. While we know this is a disappointment to many, it is the right decision for our company and its stakeholders.”

MGE was selected by the Hellenic Gaming Commission along with its GEK Terna Holding Real Estate Construction Partner to build the resort in southern Athens. The company announced in September that all equity ownership in Athens was transferred to GEK Terna, previously only a minority owner of the project.

MGE To Still Assist Project, For Now

MGE will continue to act as a consultant for Inspire Athens and offer its expertise as per its contractual obligations. GEK Terna is a Greek conglomerate that is reportedly in discussions with Hard Rock to form a consortium for the project.

MGE CEO Ray Pineault, last May, promised to complete the casino within 36 months. Pineault stated that the integrated tourist complex at the former Athens International Airport in Hellinikon was the first to include an integrated resort…

Mohegan withdraws Inspire Athens Hellinikon plans

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment has withdrawn from plans for the creation of its Inspire Athens integrated resort and casino following a “comprehensive review”.

Connecticut headquartered developer and operator Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment has withdrawn its plans for the creation of its Inspire Athens integrated resort and casino following a “comprehensive review”.

Conducted against the backdrop created by COVID-19, the review into its operations and future commitments resulted in the company not pursuing the concession rights for the Athens Project.

On September 12, 2021, Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment, through its unrestricted subsidiaries, transferred all of its equity ownership in the Athens Project to GEK Terna, previously the minority investor in the project.

In the SEC Filings on the MGE’s official website, it stated the company and GEK Terna coordinated the equity transfer with the requisite government officials in Greece, including approval by the Hellenic Gaming Commission on October 22, 2021.

The final transfer of the consortium’s reliance on the MGE’s technical and professional capacity and experience in the development and operation of integrated resort casinos remains pending, along with other administrative procedures for final governmental and regulatory review.

The news of the withdrawal comes just over a year after Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment expressed its excitement on its Inspire Athens integrated resort and casino launch, which it noted would launch a new era of tourism and economic growth for Greece and Southeast Europe.

The Inspire Athens development was slated to create in excess of 7,000 jobs for the region during and after construction, including direct, indirect and induced.

Upon completion the firm expected an increase of at least ten per cent in…

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment Scrapes Off Plans for Integrated Casino Resort in Greece — CasinoGamesPro.com

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment revealed it decided to scrape off its plans to establish a casino in Greece. The company is no longer involved in the integrated casino resort project it has been allowed to develop in Athens with a commercial partner.

According to an official company statement issued a couple of days ago, financial consideration became the reason why Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment withdrew from the project. In its statement, the company revealed it has thoroughly reviewed its operations and future projects in the conditions of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. As a result, it decided not to take advantage of the concession rights it had been given for the Athens integrated casino resort project.

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment noted that it is currently focused on its large undertaking at Inspire Korea that would consume the next few years. Withdrawing from the project is considered the right thing to do for both the company and its stakeholders.

The announcement made by the company owned by the Mohegan Tribe came as a surprise to everyone, considering the once heated competition with Hard Rock International.

Recently, the Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP) has recently amended the operating license for Inspire Athens – the casino resort project that was supposed to come to life as a partnership between Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment and the Greek construction company GEK Terna.

Nominees for the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards were chosen by a panel of experts that included editors from both USA Today and 10Best.com, as well as expert contributors. This year’s nominees included well-known casinos and resorts in the U.S., which were subject to vote during a four-week period.

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment was also recognized as part of Forbes’ annual list of America’s Best-In-State Employers 2021. Forbes and Statista based their choice on an independent survey of approximately 80,000 U.S. employees working for companies employing at least 500 people in their U.S. operations. The surveys were administered using a series of online panels and provide a representative sample of the U.S. workforce.

In an official press release, Jeff Hamilton, President/General Manager of Mohegan Sun, spoke about this recognition and said: “It’s a tremendous honor to be named ‘Best Casino Hotel’ for the fourth year in a row by the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards. At Mohegan Sun, we take pride in offering guests world-class levels of service while being home to an incredibly vast range of unique amenities and experiences, all under one roof. We feel these awards are a testament to…

In West Haven, Democratic win is affirmed by recount but the Republican candidate has not conceded

Nancy Rossi, the Democratic mayor of West Haven, was affirmed the winner of last week’s election following a recount, but her Republican opponent is not ready to concede.

“My campaign has concerns about the absentee ballot process,” said Barry Lee Cohen, the GOP nominee. “There have been many irregularities that have been identified and, in light of the ongoing scandals… we are looking at all the options.”

The recount put 4,275 votes in Rossi’s column. Cohen received 4,234 votes, 29 fewer than Rossi.

Nancy DiNardo, chairwoman of the Democratic Party in Connecticut, said she is not surprised that Rossi was reelected. “The numbers were solid on Election Night, and yesterday’s recount confirmed them,’’ DiNardo said.

“What’s troubling is that her opponent would think the response to an election he lost isn’t to graciously concede, but to ask that his opponent resign. There’s a term for that: sore loser,” DiNardo said.

The recount shifted three votes in Rossi’s favor, putting her up by a total of 32 votes, according to the voter registrar’s office.

Ben Proto, chairman of the Connecticut Republican party, said there were “a number of irregularities” involving the absentee ballots.

West Haven has been at the center of a federal inquiry into the use of COVID-19 relief funds. Former State Rep. Michael DiMassa and his business partner, John Bernardo, a West Haven city employee, have both been arrested.

Court documents filed in the case said they created a consulting company in January that has been used since to steal more than $600,000 by billing the city for nonexistent pandemic consulting services. DiMassa is accused of spending tens of thousands of dollars of the money gambling at the Mohegan Sun casino.

Cohen said earlier in the weekend that Rossi should resign if she wins. He contends she bears responsibility for alleged improprieties in how the COVID-19 relief funds…

Mohegan Officially withdraws from Hellinikon Casino Project in Athens

Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE), an American master developer and operator of premier global integrated entertainment resorts, announced on Friday that it has withdrawn from plans for the creation of a casino in Greece, slated for the former airport location at Hellinikon in southern Athens, Greece.

“MGE has conducted a comprehensive review of its operations and future commitments against the new backdrop created by the Covid-19 global pandemic and concluded that we would not continue to pursue the concession rights for the Athens project,” it noted.

The Hellenic Gaming Commission selected Mohegan and its GEK Terna Holding Real Estate Construction partner to construct the resort in southern Athens. Mohegan added that in September all of its equity ownership in the Athens project had been transferred to GEK Terna, which was previously the minority owner in the venture.
