FanDuel Group And Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE) Mohegan Sun, MGE’s flagship facility in Uncasville, Connecticut, has confirmed the launch of retail and online sports betting, igaming and daily fantasy sports.

This move means that sports bettors and fans across the state will have access to betting options such as professional soccer, basketball, baseball and hockey. In addition, FanDuel offers an online casino experience under the Mohegan Sun brand and runs daily fantasy sports in Connecticut.

Bellator flyweight champion Juliana Velasquez is not afraid to stand toe-to-toe with kickboxing champion Denise Kielholtz.

Velasquez (11-0 MMA, 6-0 BMMA) is set to make her first title defense when she takes on Kielholtz on Friday at Bellator 262 from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Since losing to Veta Arteaga at Bellator 205, Bellator kickboxing champion Kielholtz (6-2 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) has won her past four bouts, most recently a 43-second knockout of Kate Jackson last October. But despite Kielholtz’s striking prowess, Velasquez thinks her size will play a factor.

“I recently watched Denise Kielholtz’s fight against Veta Arteaga, when Denise lost via standing guillotine,” Velasquez told MMA Junkie. “Denise and I are both judo black belts. Even though she’s more focused on kickboxing nowadays, I too enjoy striking. To be honest, I feel just as comfortable on the feet as I do on the ground. I feel Denise’s skills are similar to mine. I expect this to result in an unpredictable fight. Anything can happen. I have to stay alert since she’s a kickboxing champ, but I believe my reach will give me an advantage.”

With Friday being her first fight of the year since dethroning Ilima-Lei Macfarlane in December, Velasquez is hoping to squeeze another title defense in 2021.

“After this bout, I’d like to fight at least once more before the end of the year,” Velasquez said. “After my last one, I didn’t take the time to rest. This time around, I’m planning to take a one-month vacation. I’d like to take my mind off things for a while, so I can come back refreshed and refocus on fighting again.”

The popular Lake Day at Mohegan Lake, scheduled for Saturday, July 17, is an annual family fun day of fishing derbies, boat races, hiking, live music, Thai dancing and more. 

The event, which is free and open to the public to participate in all events at beaches around the lake, is sponsored by the volunteer group Mohegan Lake Improvement District (MLID), which maintains the lake’s environment and preserves its history. 

“Throughout the year, we actively work hard to maintain the health of our lake so everyone can enjoy it, especially on Lake Day,” said Ken Belfer, President of MLID. “And although we missed a year, we are back.”  

A special “Water Taxi” will shuttle folks between beaches to partake in special events and admire decorations on each beach ving for the Lake Day Trophy for best decorations. Visitors can participate in the boat parade with their decorated boats: kayak, canoe, stand-up paddle board.

July 18 is set as the rain date.

Undefeated women’s flyweight champion Juliana Velasquez will be in action on Friday night when she defends her title against Denise Kielholtz in the main event of Bellator 262. The action is set to go down from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Velasquez is making the fist defense of the title she won with a decision win over then-champ Ilima-Lei Macfarlane this past December. That win ran Velasquez’s career record to an impressive 11-0, with six wins in the Bellator cage. The loss was the first of Macfarlane’s career, making Velasquez’s victory an even bigger accomplishment.

Kielholtz is an accomplished kickboxer, having captured the Bellator kickboxing women’s flyweight championship in 2016. In the Bellator MMA cage, Kielholtz has picked up a 6-1 record and is currently riding a four-fight winning streak, winning twice by knockout and three times by submission despite her striking background.

Harry Styles surprised fans this week with the announcement of a huge batch of rescheduled concerts on his long-postponed Love On Tour run, planning 40 concerts for the United States in coming months. Of the 40 shows announced, 37 were rescheduled performances, with new dates added in Nashville, Uncasville Connecticut and Milwaukee.

“LOVE ON TOUR will be going out across the USA this September and I could not be more excited for these shows,” reads a post to the singer’s social media platforms. “As always, the well-being of my fans, band, and crew, is my top priority.”

Harry Styles will be joined by Jenny Lewis on the dates (with the exception of back-to-back nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden on October 30 and 31st). His tour resumes in Las Vegas on Saturday, September 4th, with shows running consistenly through November 20th. Along the way, Styles will perform in 21 states plus Washington D.C. New York  and California both see multiple dates, with Madison Square Garden scheduled for October 3rd and 4th as well as the pair of Halloween gigs later in the month. The Forum in Los Angeles sees three shows in four days (November 17, 19-20) to close the currently announced run, with earlier stops in Sacramento, San Jose, and San Diego also scheduled. Texas will also see three performances, with San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston all planned for September stops.

No dates outside of the United States have been announced, which the singer’s team addressed on social media.

Jul. 15—Casino slot-machine revenues were down significantly last month compared to the previous June, evidence that Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resorts Casino benefited from reopening ahead of their competition during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun opened June 1, 2020, after being closed for 11 weeks, other Northeast casinos remain shuttered.

Foxwoods reported Thursday it “won,” or kept, $29.4 million in slot revenue after paying out prizes, a 12.7% decline compared to the $33.6 million it kept in June 2020. Mohegan Sun kept $40.9 million last month, a 10% drop from the $45.5 million it kept the same month last year.

“If you look at last June, it’s very difficult to compare,” said Jeff Hamilton, Mohegan Sun’s president and general manager. “We were just coming out of the worst of the pandemic and nothing else was open. Market conditions were very, very different than this June.”

Prior to June, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun had notched three straight months of slot-revenue increases, keeping $32.7 million and $44.9 million, respectively, in May.

“As for month over month, June historically doesn’t perform as well as May,” Hamilton said. “There’s so much going on in June — graduations, weddings, Father’s Day, barbecues … When we look at the quarter — April, May and June — we’re happy with our results.”

Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, which contribute 25% of their slots win to the state, anted up $7.3 million and $10.2 million, respectively, in June, the last month of the state’s 2021 fiscal year.

For the year, Foxwoods contributed $81.7 million, while Mohegan Sun contributed $118.5 million. The combined total of $200.3 million represents a 3.9% increase over the $192.7 million the casinos contributed in fiscal 2020.

In the pre-pandemic 2019 fiscal year, the casinos contributed $255.2 million.

The North Haven Board of Education has voted to retire its mascot, the Indians, making it the latest town reacting to years-long controversy and discussion about how such names can be considered offensive and harmful.

Board members said they received a landslide of communications on the topic from the public, with opinions both for and against the change. Those who were in favor of keeping the name said it was meant to honor Native Americans and the town’s history.

Those opposed argued such depictions as mascots can be harmful and pointed out that all of Connecticut’s tribes have asked that school districts retire these kinds of mascots.

The board voted to retire the name and imagery, and also to consider options to seek tribal consent for approval of any new mascot names, with the intent to settle on something that “honors and preserves North Haven’s traditions and histories.”

North Haven was facing the prospect of losing out on annual grant funds from the Mashantucket Pequot/Mohegan Fund, an account that’s funded with the state’s 25 percent share of slot machine revenues generated at the two casinos owned and operated by the federally recognized Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Tribes. This change was part of a budget bill that passed that would require any schools using Native American names or imagery to get written consent from a state- or federally-recognized tribe in their region.

It’s estimated that about a dozen schools in Connecticut still use Native American names or images. Some communities have already changed the names of their athletic teams in light of the racial reckoning that has been taking place in the U.S. For example, the Manchester Indians became the Red Hawks in 2019 following a months-long campaign by students who said the mascot was a stereotype they could not…
