Jul. 7—MOHEGAN — Partners Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment and FanDuel Group announced Wednesday they’re poised to roll out retail and online sports betting, online gaming and daily fantasy sports in Connecticut this fall, “pending all licensing and regulatory approvals.”

The partnership will enable bettors throughout the state to place wagers on professional football, basketball, baseball, hockey and other sports via FanDuel, which also will provide online casino gaming under the Mohegan Sun brand and operate daily fantasy sports in Connecticut.

“We’re excited to work with FanDuel, one of the leading sports-tech entertainment companies in the U.S., to bring the brand’s innovative sports betting and iGaming solutions to Mohegan Sun Connecticut,” Ray Pineault, MGE’s president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “Our partnership is a priority for Mohegan Digital, as we look to grow and enhance our casino, sportsbook and online operations in Connecticut — and beyond.”

Mohegan Sun and FanDuel expect to open a temporary sportsbook location at the casino in September and anticipate opening a permanent sportsbook there this winter. The temporary location will feature four live betting windows and 16 self-service betting terminals.

The sportsbook at Mohegan Sun has the potential to become the largest FanDuel sportsbook in the United States, according to Amy Howe, president of FanDuel Group.

“When we combine the retail sports betting experience with the opportunity for online sports betting and iGaming, Connecticut is going to be a key state for us as we look towards the start of football season,” Howe said.

Sports betting, online gaming and daily fantasy sports were authorized in Connecticut by legislation Gov. Ned Lamont signed into law in May. United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Eastern CT held its graduation ceremony in June for their Project SEARCH graduates who had completed internships this year at the Mohegan Sun. The 2021 graduates are DaWayne Allen, Samantha Cournoyer and Christopher Lee Meola.

Nationally, statistics report that 75% of graduates are hired, often by the businesses that hosted the Project SEARCH Program, which is a national school to work program. Chris and Sam have already been offered and accepted jobs at Mohegan Sun. Samantha will be working in Environmental Services and Chris was hired by Eurest Food Services.

During a beautiful outdoor graduation ceremony at the Sun, where 3 graduates received diplomas, Project SEARCH graduate Chris Lee Meola, shared words of wisdom for future interns in this short video… “To do your best work”.

UCP’s employment programs offer total immersion in the workplace for real-life work experience to help young adults with physical, developmental and intellectual disabilities gain marketable job skills. UCP’s Project SEARCH program at the Mohegan Sun serves two populations: High school students who are on an Individual Education Program (IEP) and entering their last year of high school eligibility; and young adults with disabilities who have DDS support who are between the ages of 18 and 35.

Jennifer Keatley, Executive Director of UCP of Eastern CT, explained what sets UCP’s employment programs apart, “They are different from traditional transition programs — we are completely focused on outcomes tied to the following goals: to help students transitioning from school to work and young adults gain competitive employment in year-round/non-seasonal jobs with prevailing wages.”

The Carnegie Medal is North America’s highest honor for civilian heroism, risking their lives for others in peril.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. —

In December 2019, Jonathan Goldfarb and Matthew Goldfarb risked their lives to save a stranger. Now, the two men are being recognized for their outstanding heroism. 

The afternoon of December 22, 2019, the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a 911 phone call. A man had attempted to rescue his dog and was in distress in the waters of Lake Mohegan. 

The male had been walking his dog with his girlfriend when the dog ran onto the ice and fell into the water. The male then ran into the Lake to rescue the dog, but he became submerged multiple times and was having difficulty getting back to shore due to the extreme cold. 

In open water, about 100 feet from shore, he and his dog struggled to stay above the water. 

The man’s girlfriend began to yell for help and entered the water, attempting to assist him.  

At this moment, Jonathan Goldfarb, a physical therapist who resides in Fairfield, and his brother Matthew Goldfarb, a teacher who was visiting his brother from Howell, New Jersey were walking with family in the area and heard the cries for help.  

They ran to the area and found the man in distress in the water.  

The Goldfarbs both entered the water without hesitation, knowing their own safety and lives were at risk.

They grasped the man and his dog and were able to pull them to safety onto dry land.  

Police reported that the man had been in the freezing water, submerged at times, for about 10 minutes. The brothers were only in the water for four.

Flutter Entertainment-owned FanDuel Group has signed a multi-vertical market access deal with Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE) to enter Connecticut’s regulated betting and gaming market.

The agreement will see FanDuel bring retail and online sports betting, as well as iGaming and daily fantasy sports, to MGE’s flagship Mohegan Sun property in Uncasville.

“We’re excited to work with FanDuel, one of the leading sports-tech entertainment companies in the US to bring the brand’s innovative sports betting and iGaming solutions to Mohegan Sun Connecticut,” said Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment president and CEO Ray Pineault.

“Our partnership is a priority for Mohegan Digital, as we look to grow and enhance our casino, sportsbook and online operations in Connecticut – and beyond. We’re confident that FanDuel will deliver a best-in-class digital and in-person experience for our loyal guests.”

A temporary retail Mohegan Sun/FanDuel Sportsbook will be located inside Mohegan Sun and will feature four live betting windows and sixteen self-service betting terminals. A permanent sportsbook location is expected to open in winter, subject to securing regulatory approvals.

“Mohegan Sun is an iconic casino and entertainment destination in the Northeast, and we are excited to announce our first tribal gaming partnership with one of the leading tribal operators in the United States,” said FanDuel president Amy Howe. “We have some incredible plans for the retail space at Mohegan Sun, with the potential to be the largest FanDuel Sportsbook in the United States.

Shares in FanDuel parent company Flutter Entertainment plc (LSE:FLTR) closed marginally lower at 12,907.89 pence per share in London Thursday.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – For over seven years, Scott Coker has been at the Bellator control panel. The time has flown by for Coker, who would rather focus on the future than the past.

“I think we’ve done a lot of great work in the last seven years,” Coker told MMA Junkie on Thursday. “This was a much different roster than it was seven years ago. It takes time to build a company and a league. I think that right now this is the best roster we’ve had to date. We’re with a great new television partner and there’s a lot of great things ahead. I’m really excited about what’s happening here at Bellator and the future.”

Since July 2020, Bellator has held all 20 of its domestic events at Mohegan Sun Arena. After Bellator 261 on Friday and Bellator 262 on July 13, the promotion will travel across the country for Bellator 263 on July 31 in Los Angeles.

Despite his praise for Mohegan Sun, Coker is excited to hit the road again. The hope is that fans across the country – and perhaps even some overseas – will be able to attend a live Bellator event in 2021.

“We’re out there looking for some venues right now,” Coker said. “We’re definitely going to get on the road. We love the Mohegan Sun. This is a great venue that’s been very good to us. It’s been the home for the last (11) months but I think it’s time to get on the road and get back to what we used to do, which is have a little touring roadshow, coming to different cities around the country.

Jun. 25—For Christian Edwards, Ben Parrish is out as the Albuquerque resident’s opponent Friday on a Bellator card at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Simon Biyong is in, a pairing made on extremely short notice after Biyong’s scheduled opponent also fell out.

Highly irregular? In MMA, not really.

Nor is there anything irregular, Edwards said, about his heartbeat. So there.

To backtrack:

Edwards (4-0), a light heavyweight who trains at Jackson-Wink, was to have fought Parrish (4-1) on a Bellator card in Uncasville on May 21. But Edwards failed a physical exam performed moments after weighing in the day before, told by a Mohegan Tribe athletic commission doctor that he’d detected an irregular heartbeat.

“I felt fine,” Edwards said in a phone interview on Tuesday. “I wasn’t dizzy or lightheaded or nothing. … (The doctor) listens to my heartbeat and drops that one on me, and I said, ‘What do you mean?’

“He said, your heartbeat’s irregular and I can’t pass you.'”

Dehydration is known to cause irregular heartbeats, and Edwards hadn’t had a chance to rehydrate after his weight cut before he was examined. He asked to be re-examined 20 minutes later, a request that was granted. The outcome, though, was the same: not cleared to fight.

Edwards said he was examined again the next day, and no irregular heartbeat was found. It was too late to reschedule the fight against Parrish, but Edwards was cleared for further action. “It was a really weird, unfortunate situation,” Edwards said, “but lesson learned. Now I know I can’t let (a commission doctor) near me until I’ve had a chance to rehydrate.”

Getting down to the light heavyweight limit of 205 pounds sooner, he’s been told, also might be a good idea. He also weighed in unnecessarily light, at 202 pounds, in May.

“I’m gonna get it right this time,” he said.
