Briefs: Storm reporting database, Mohican river event, Library sock hop, lead poisoning

Mansfield News Journal  |  USA TODAY NETWORK

New database allows self-reporting of local storm damage

The Richland County Emergency Management Agency Wednesday introduced a new resident self-reporting database during an open house for more than 60 community partners and elected officials.

The new database will allow Richland County residents to go online and report damage for disasters in the future. Residents will still have the option to contact First Call-211 to report damage.

Also during the open house, information was shared on storm damage from recent weather events, the solar eclipse and county tornado sirens. This summer, EMA will be partnering with Richland Newhope Industries’ Ready for Hire project for transitional age youth.

ODNR hosts evening stream exploration of the Mohican State scenic river

LOUDONVILLE — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves will offer information about stream quality monitoring at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mohican State Park.

This program provides an introduction to learning more about Ohio’s Scenic Rivers Program as well as the first step in becoming a water quality monitoring volunteer for ODNR. People will have the option to wade in the Clear Fork stem of the Mohican River; it is recommended that all attendees wear closed-toe shoes.

The Mohican State Scenic River, including the lower stem of Clear Fork, joined the Ohio State Scenic River system in 2006.

The event will be held at the Class A shelter house, near the entrance of Mohican’s campground. Volunteers can pre-register by contacting Christine Szymanski at Christine.Szymanski@dnr.ohio.gov.

Into NJ – The Trek

The guy you’ve seen in several of my photos in the orange shirt is my friend BeeZ (yes, BeeZ). We both started hiking our flip flops on the same day at the south end of Shenandoah National Park. BeeZ is from Atlanta and a mathematician by trade. So, while his jokes may be lacking, he’s an experienced hiker who’s been keeping an eye on me. He handles all the logistics on a daily basis so I don’t have to.  We don’t typically hike shoulder to shoulder since I can’t keep his pace, but we normally end up in the same place at day’s end.

Day 33 – Delaware Water Gap to Mohican Outdoor Center (9)

Day 34 – Mohican Outdoor Center to Gren Anderson Shelter (21)

Day 35 – Gren Anderson Shelter to Route 443, Mosey’s Place (11)

Day 36 – Rest at Mosey’s (0)

I don’t want to seem ungrateful, but it’s nice to be out of Pennsylvania. As they say on the NJ lottery commercials – “Anything can happen … in New Jersey.”

The trail has been a bit easier for us, and we came to an impressive beaver pond. These pictures will speak to a beaver’s determination. These are really big trees. Note the white AT blaze on the tree in the first photo.

I’m almost surprised they weren’t able to drag that first tree away.

On day 34, I spent my first night in a shelter rather than a tent and had a few harrowing minutes.  During the night, I slipped out of my sleeping bag to, you know, answer nature’s call. When I reached for my shoes at…

Graffiti vandalism at Umpachene Falls in New Marlborough sparks fury and calls for a silent group meditation

Graffiti on a rock

The falls are considered sacred, and residents come here to find peace, swim, hike and picnic. Only New Marlborough residents and their guests are officially permitted, but the town has been generous in allowing the wider public to enjoy the falls.

NEW MARLBOROUGH — A South County jewel named for a Mohican sachem was defaced by graffiti Monday, sparking fury in the community as well as plans for a silent group meditation Tuesday evening.

Vandals tagged boulders and a picnic table at Umpachene Falls, a town-owned park that includes the cascading waterfalls where the Umpachene and Konkapot rivers join.

Police Chief Graham Frank said he doesn’t yet have any leads, but thinks it’s likely “kids” who might also have done the same thing here and at another area in March of last year, but worse.

“We’re doing extra patrol checks,” he said, noting that the park is on the regular police patrol route.

One town resident, Daniel Alden, saw the graffiti when he went to the park Monday. He posted to Facebook that he is offering a $500 reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible. Alden also posted an invitation to a “Silent Group Meditation for the Healing & Protection of Umpachene Falls” Tuesday evening.

He spotted vandalism on the Appalachian Trail last week. Meet Cosmo Catalano, a volunteer who helps safeguard the trail in the northern Berkshires.

TAGHKANIC — Forge Project, a Native-led art, culture and decolonial education initiative, on Monday announced the six recipients of its 2023 fellowship: Margeaux Abeyta (Taos Pueblo and Diné), Brent Michael Davids (Mohican/Munsee-Lenape), Lucy Grignon (Stockbridge-Munsee/Menominee), Emily Johnson (Yup’ik), Dr. Suzanne Kite (Oglála Lakȟóta) and Rachel Martin (Tlingít).

“We’re excited to introduce our third annual class of Forge Fellows, whose interdisciplinary approaches as creators, innovators and organizers speak to the rich complexity of Native and Indigenous thought today,” Forge Project Executive Director Candice Hopkins (Carcross/Tagish First Nation) said in a statement.

Forge Project is located on the ancestral homelands of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians, who are now in Wisconsin through forced removal. The organization has reserved two fellowship spots for members of the Stockbridge-Munsee in recognition of their displacement and to encourage site-specific and relational projects.

Stockbridge tribe seeks to recover ancestral homeland at Fenn Farm

STOCKBRIDGE — On a pristine, forested property at the northern tip of Monument Mountain is Fenn Farm — 351 acres of scenic undeveloped land.

The ancestral homelands once belonged to the Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohican Indians. Last fall, it went on the market for $3 million following the death in July of owner Clover Swann, the artist, author and longtime member of the Stockbridge Land Trust.

Her former house has been carved out of the potential sale marketed by William Pitt/Sotheby’s International Realty in Great Barrington.

Last week the tribe submitted a $2.5 million funding application to the state’s Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Action Grant program for the purchase and conservation of the property. Grant awards are expected to be announced this summer.

“Since we’ve been dispossessed of our land out East, we’ve always attempted to reacquire our originally ceded territory,” said Shannon Holsey, tribal president based in Bowler, Wisconsin. “Our stars must have aligned when this property became available, with the outreach of allies and partners throughout Massachusetts to assist us.”

Neighborhood group in Detroit to turn vacant lot into park

(CBS DETROIT) – A neighborhood group in Detroit has a new project underway.

The Mohican-Regent Resident’s Association recently bought a vacant lot, hoping to turn it into a spot for people to come together.

On the corner of East State Fair Avenue and Anvil Street in Detroit, sits an empty lot people in the area say has been an eyesore for decades.

Soon, George Preston says that’s going to change.

“Our plan is to have a sitting park, a place where people can come and sit and relax,” said Preston, president of the Mohican-Regent Resident’s Association.

Preston says the vacant land has been a sight of blight for far too long.

“For years, it looked like a forest and people were beginning to dump here. It was just an ugly site,” Preston said.

With the help of the city, grants and donations, the association was able to buy the 8 lots that make up this property.

“Our goal is to put a path over here and we’re going to fence it all in, then we’ll put benches and tables over here,” said Preston.

A mural is also on the list of things to create. Preston says the group has already started cleaning up the site.

All they need to get the job done is more volunteers. Donations always help too.

“We’re always looking for donations,” said Preston.
