Neighborhood group in Detroit to turn vacant lot into park

(CBS DETROIT) – A neighborhood group in Detroit has a new project underway.

The Mohican-Regent Resident’s Association recently bought a vacant lot, hoping to turn it into a spot for people to come together.

On the corner of East State Fair Avenue and Anvil Street in Detroit, sits an empty lot people in the area say has been an eyesore for decades.

Soon, George Preston says that’s going to change.

“Our plan is to have a sitting park, a place where people can come and sit and relax,” said Preston, president of the Mohican-Regent Resident’s Association.

Preston says the vacant land has been a sight of blight for far too long.

“For years, it looked like a forest and people were beginning to dump here. It was just an ugly site,” Preston said.

With the help of the city, grants and donations, the association was able to buy the 8 lots that make up this property.

“Our goal is to put a path over here and we’re going to fence it all in, then we’ll put benches and tables over here,” said Preston.

A mural is also on the list of things to create. Preston says the group has already started cleaning up the site.

All they need to get the job done is more volunteers. Donations always help too.

“We’re always looking for donations,” said Preston.

Hiking | Photo by Yogendra Singh | Pexels.com

Ohio is home to beautiful parks, hiking trails and nature scenes that are accessible in all seasons. Here are some great places to enjoy this beauty during the summer months.

Local Dayton area

Twin Valley Trail

This trail system is located in southwest Ohio, not far from the downtown Dayton area. It is accessible from a few different parks including Germantown Main Park.

The trail loops to connect with other systems and spans 49 miles according to Five Rivers MetroParks. Hikers of all levels can participate in short two-mile hikes or longer, more advanced hikes.

The park is open all year and is suitable for backpackers. It also features small campsites hikers can reserve to stay the night on the trail.

Statewide

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Those looking for a moderate winter hiking adventure can check out the trails in Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

This park, located in Peninsula Ohio, offers trails for all levels of hikers. Those looking for an easier path can go on trails like Ledges Trail and Pine Grove Trail. Those looking for a slightly more difficult adventure can check out the Wetmore Bridle trail, all located in the Park.

The park is open 24/7 all year round, excluding national holidays, and holds no entrance fee.

Those interested in learning more about the park can do so here.

Mohican State Park

Those looking for a more challenging course can try the Hemlock Gorge Loop in Mohican State Park.

Hikers have highly reviewed this 11.9-mile hike through the northern Ohio Forrest. The trail is geared towards moderately to highly experienced hikers, especially during the winter months.

Mohican State Park is open year-round and has accommodations for campers and those wishing…

Housatonic River

Housatonic River is a 149-mile-long river that flows from the southern to southeastern direction through the western parts of the US States of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Originating from the Berkshire Mountains close to the city of Pittsfield in Massachusetts, the Housatonic River finally drains into the Long Island Sound between the cities of Stratford and Milford in Connecticut. The name “Housatonic” has been derived from the native Mohican phrase “usi-a-di-en-uk,” which means “beyond the mountain place.” Besides being used for whitewater paddling and fly fishing, the waters of the Housatonic River have been harnessed over the years to generate hydroelectric power for the textiles, paper, and iron industries.

Course Of The Housatonic River

Housatonic River rapids and rocks at Gaylordsville, ConnecticutHousatonic River at Gaylordsville, Connecticut.

The Housatonic River begins its journey in far southwestern Massachusetts, where the mainstream is formed by the confluence of the East and West Branches of the Housatonic River close to the city of Pittsfield. The 17-mile-long East Branch of the Housatonic River, which rises at Muddy Pond, drops about 480 ft before meeting with the West Branch of the Housatonic River. The 5-mile-long West Branch also drops about 140 ft before it meets the East Branch. The joining of the East and West Branches forms the headwaters of the Housatonic River. The river then flows in a southerly direction through the Berkshire Mountains into western Connecticut.

In Connecticut, five dams, including the Derby Dam, Bulls Bridge, Falls Village, Shepaug Dam, and Stevenson Dam Hydroelectric Plant, impound the Housatonic River. Of these dams, the Derby, Shepaug, and Stevenson Dams form many lakes, such as Lake Housatonic, Lake Lillinonah, and Lake Zoar. Immediately south of the Bulls Bridge power station, waters of the Housatonic River…

Local man completes 52 Hike Challenge Winter Series

Bridge of Dreams in Brinkhaven, Ohio, upon completion of my 52 Hike Challenge 2022. | Courtesy of Clark Schwenke

Welcome back, everyone; I hope our mild winter allowed you to get out and enjoy the outdoors. For those who were keeping track, I did finish my 52 Hike Challenge for 2022 in October of last year, with a 10K hike that took me from Glenmont to Brinkhaven on the Holmes County Trail and Mohican Valley Trail.

Since then, I have completed the 52 Hike Challenge Winter Series with 30 Hours of hiking from December to February and am well into my 52 Hike Challenge 2023. So far this year, I have visited seven national parks or national historic sites, hiked in five states, doing a portion of the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, and set a personal record for my greatest elevation gain in a single hike, with 1,200 feet up in 2 miles on Bob’s Hill in the Catoctin Mountains of Maryland. In addition, I have hiked various terrain and weather conditions, using many of the tips, tricks and much of the gear I recommended last year.

During my 52 Hike Challenge Winter Series, I managed to get a day off shortly after one of our biggest snows this winter and spent the day at Mohican State Park. I hiked a little over 10 miles that day, and the scenery was worth the temperatures. I started out from the Covered Bridge, hiked the Lyons Falls Trail to Big Lyon Falls, on to Little Lyon Falls and out to Pleasant Hill Dam. From there, I hiked the Pleasant Hill Trail and Hemlock Gorge Trail back to the Class A Campground off of State Route 3. I returned to the Covered Bridge on the Hemlock Gorge Trail,…

Seven of the past presidents were in attendance, that included current president Susan Hale, along with Ginny Fisher (1998-99), Laura Walker (2002-04), Joyce Sparks (2006-07, 2008-11, 2015-20), Rita Scheurer (2007-08, 2013-15), Margaret Strong (2011-13), Kim Reed (2020-21) and Dawn Tackett (2020-21).

Two Men’s Auxiliary members were present in Gearold Smith (2006-07) and Brad Strong (2010-13).

“Never forget the past,” Myers said in the beginning of his talk.

Past commander Billy Walker and past president Joyce Sparks spoke on what this occasion means to them to be able to gather with former presidents and commanders.

“I was district commander for two years. I served in Vietnam in 1970-71 and I was in the military eight years before I got out,” said Walker. “This place has a lot of history and good people. It’s an honor to be here with these people. It made me a better man than I used to be.”

“This is something we used to do every year. It kind of got pushed to the side and because of Covid we were unable to pick up a lot of stuff,” said Sparks. “Bill suggested…
