Mohican Quilters work depicting rural Loudonville will be auctioned at Oct. 5 Street Fair

The Mohican Quilters of Loudonville have produced a quilt to be auctioned at the upcoming Loudonville Free Street Fair, with proceeds going to the fair board.

“For years, the fair has allowed our organization to show our quilt projects to be judged and shared with fairgoers,” Richelle Nicholas of the Quilters explained. “We decided to jointly make and donate a quilt to the fair to be auctioned, with proceeds going to the fair.”

Meet Garrett DeWitt:He recently took over as Loudonville administrator

The quilt auction will be conducted during the auction of prize-winning cakes and pies on the fair midway at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Nicholas said 16 of the 30 Mohican Quilters helped make the item.

“The quilt was designed with life in our rural area in mind,” Nicholas said. “Members chose patterns and made them with fabric the club purchased from the Alabaster Mouse in Loudonville, at times adding material from their own ‘stash’ to their block. Members met in March and added sashing and completed the quilt top. One of the members then quilted the layers together.”

The Mohican Quilters have been in the Loudonville community for 39 years, and meet on the second Monday of each month at the Christian Community Center (Three Cs) at 807 Valley View Drive.

Meetings start at 7 p.m. Programming at meetings includes presentations by club members, show and shares, guest speakers, or hands-on projects. New participants are always welcome.

For more information on the Quilters, contact Nicholas at mrsdnichola@aol.com.

Members are planning their first quilt show, scheduled to be held in the Loudonvilel Fair’s Hans Building during the 2023 Loudonville car Show.

Rewind, Review and Re-Rate: 1992’s ‘The Last of the Mohicans,’ a Cinematic Masterpiece

R | 1h 52min | Action, Adventure, Drama | 1992

Epoch Times PhotoEpoch Times Photo Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) leads an attack, in “The Last of the Mohicans.” (20th Century Fox)

Filmmakers who attempt to make historical dramas have to walk a careful tightrope when attempting to appeal to a mass audience. On one hand, if they focus on too much historical accuracy, the action can become bogged down to the extent that you feel like you’re watching a rather dry documentary. And, on the other hand, if they play a little too fast and lose with historical accuracy, their projects won’t be taken seriously.

Based on an 1826 novel by James Fennimore Cooper and directed by Michael Mann, 1992’s “The Last of the Mohicans” not only successfully traverses the aforementioned tightrope, it does so with self-confident assurance.

This is a bold, visionary film the likes of which one sees only once in a while. Although Cooper’s book has been adapted on the big screen numerous times, this version has the most historically accurate feel to it, and features some gorgeous outdoor photography and a highly memorable score to boot.

The film is set in 1757, during the onset of the French and Indian War (1754–1763). The British and French are viciously vying for control of eastern North America and both countries utilize Native Americans to bolster their armies. While the Mohican tribe is allied with the British, the Hurons side with the French.

Peasley and Mohican win opening night race

16-year-old Mane Pakootas brings home second place; Defending champion Riley Prescott places fifth

OMAK, Wash. – It felt just like old times for Tyler Peasley.

Peasley a Colville tribal member and his family horse Mohican didn’t get the best start, but they managed to push through, going on to cross the finish line in first place on Thursday night in the first of four races at this year’s World Famous Suicide Race in Omak.

This was a special moment for Peasley not just because he’s back in the winning column, but for his horse too as this was his horse Mohican’s first time ever racing in the suicide race.

“First race, what a way to break him in right,” said Peasley after the race. “That horse is one that our family raised, it comes from our bloodlines.”

It’s been since 2011 that Peasley has won the Overall title as he expressed what it would mean to win it all this year.

“It would be insane for me,” Peasley said. “It would be crazy, I live for this race.“

The youngest rider in this year’s race, is Colville tribal member Mane Pakootas having just turned 16 this past June. Pakootas and his horse Lonesome would go on to place second. Lonesome is owned by George Marchand.

Tribal member Louis Zacherle and Hoagy placed third with Oliver Pakootas and Onyx placing fourth. Defending champion Riley Prescott and Black Shay placed fifth.

Points are earned on a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 basis, with the winner earning five points, second place earning four points, third place earning three points, fourth place earning two points and fifth place earning one point.

A Mohicans Rapper Recorded a Viral #SoGoneChallenge, But What Comes Next?

Last week was good for Dallas rapper David Morgan. On the spur of the moment, he decided to record a response to superstar Chicago rapper Chance the Rapper’s #SoGoneChallenge, a viral meme that involves freestyling over Monica’s 2003 hit song, “So Gone.”

Within a week, Morgan’s rendition had garnered almost 1,800 retweets and 3,500 Twitter likes.

“I didn’t even know the #SoGoneChallenge was a thing, but I saw Chance the Rapper do one so I figured I’d do one too,” Morgan says at the start of his video. “He was talking about his girl and I don’t really have one of those right now so … I mean, I can still rap.”

Morgan’s freestyle earned him lots of praise on social media, including at least a dozen comparisons to Outkast’s Andre 3000, as well as the attention of influential hip-hop bloggers like LowKey of You Heard That New. Dallas Mavericks forward Justin Anderson shared the video. But for Morgan, who’s seen his local buzz ebb and flow in a past life with hip-hop duo the Mohicans, the attention generated mixed emotions.

“When I saw all the mentions on Twitter, I was like, ‘Oh shit, this is tight! This is cool. People are paying attention,’” Morgan says. “It felt cool, but at the same time I felt like, in a couple days the retweets are going to stop and I’m going to be back to myself, so what’s next?”

In 2010, when Morgan was a bright-eyed freshman at Texas Tech in Lubbock, he met another rapper named Devin Calvin from Fort Worth and the two formed the Mohicans. The pair earned a nice reputation on campus with their Southern-inspired tracks and calm and collected verse. With a heavy presence…

Ohio Woman Claims to Have Recorded Bigfoot Howls … Or Was it Coyotes?

A woman who lives near Mohican River in Ohio recorded howls on July 3 that she claims are from bigfoot. Suzanne Ferencak, a member of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, shared the two-minute-long audio file with the Mansfield News Journal. An unnamed analyst within the bigfoot community who listened to the recording said there was “high potential” for it being one bigfoot trying to locate another.

= 2 ) { siteRootDomain = siteRootDomainParts[siteRootDomainParts.length – 2] + “.” + siteRootDomainParts[siteRootDomainParts.length – 1]; } cnxps.cmd.push(function () { cnxps({ playerId: “e7372d2b-1047-4c36-93c0-33a835b21380”, customParam1: window.empire.apps.ads.targeting.pageId + “”, customParam2: window.empire.apps.ads.targeting.section + “”, customParam3: window.empire.apps.ads.targeting.keywords + “”, settings: { advertising: { macros: { cust_params: “site=” + siteRootDomain + “&targeting_article=” + window.empire.apps.ads.targeting.externalId + “&targeting_section=” + window.empire.apps.ads.targeting.section + “&targeting_keyword=” + window.empire.apps.ads.targeting.keywords + “&article=” + window.empire.apps.ads.targeting.pageId, article: window.empire.apps.ads.targeting.pageId, category: window.empire.apps.ads.targeting.section, keywords: window.empire.apps.ads.targeting.keywords, } } } }).render(“404a5343b1434e25bf26b4e6356298bc”); });]]>

“The first howler has a brassy tone to its voice that can be indicative of (Sasquatch),” the analyst wrote. “There are a couple features in the execution, such as shifting to an ‘AA’ phoneme at the end of the call that are indicative as well, most noticeable in the last two howls.”

If you listened to the recording and thought those are coyotes, you’re not alone. Kyle Casey, a naturalist at Mohican State Park, listened to the recording and said it is most likely coyotes. “The closest thing that we believe it would be would be the call of an alpha male coyote,” Casey told USA TODAY. “A coyote calling in its pack.” He noted, however, that the recorded howls weren’t a perfect match for that explanation. For reference, here’s a video that features some good coyote howling and barking.

The howls occurred while Ferencak was at a campsite…
