Hard work on display at Mohican District Science Day at Ashland University

ASHLAND – Many observers of the science fair projects on display Saturday at Ashland University’s John C. Myers Convocation Center were impressed by the amount of work and variety of informational reports on display.

More: How the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted people, businesses and downtowns two years later

Kathy Tollett, a middle school science teacher at St. Jude’s in Elyria, was at her first district science fair. She was truly surprised by the quality of projects

“It is really interesting to see the progression through the grades, and how their graphics, and the all-around improvement in their projects as they get older,” she said.

61st annual Mohican District Science Day at Ashland University

A total of 132 students from 16 area schools in the Mohican District Science Day took part in  the 60th annual Science Day, sponsored by the Mohican District Junior Division of the Ohio Academy of Science.

According to Jeff Weidenhamer, the Science Day director and a professor of chemistry at AU, the number of participants this year was about half of what it had pre-pandemic, but he was glad to be hosting a live event after two year away.

“Our last face-to-face fair was in 2019,” Weidenhamer said. “It’s going well. We expect it’s going to take some time for schools to get science fairs going again, but we thought it was important to build enthusiasm for science.

“Kids have the opportunity to present their work and talk to judges,” the director continued. “The work that goes into these projects is top notch and the students do some high-quality work.”

Time and hard work on display

The Kellerman family from Medina was at their first fair in support of their daughter, sixth-grader Clarissa from St. Francis Xavier in Medina.

“This is our first time at a district level event, and the projects…

BUSINESS MONDAY: Momma Lo’s Southern Style BBQ

Great Barrington – If you happened to motor through Craryville during the past two and a half years, you may have glimpsed plumes of smoke rising like Mohican signals into the skies above Random Harvest and Zinnia’s Dinette, formerly The Dutch Treat. Driving closer, you may then have been drawn to the pothole-pitted parking lot and a few makeshift tents, where eponymous proprietress Loretta “Momma Lo” McClennan and her sons “T” and “Buddha” (Attarilm and Ahmed) were gamely preparing feasts of Tennessee-infused barbecue.

One such passerby was Richard Stanley, impresario of the Triplex Cinema and other businesses in Great Barrington, who stopped there on his way to a golfing expedition. Upon sampling the maximally authentic wares of this roadside pop-up, and fully cognizant of South County’s utter dearth of BBQ options, Stanley exclaimed to Momma Lo that she and her sons ought to be in Great Barrington, offering their artful, hand-crafted food to a wider population, and from more commodious digs. Stanley told The Edge that besides appreciating the quality of the food, he was motivated by a desire to make Great Barrington more inclusive. “I want to create business opportunities here for all kinds of entrepreneurs.”

Flash-forward a year or two, and here they are in the Triplex plaza, standing resplendent in their cheerfully appointed new storefront, formerly home to STEAM, a pan-Asian noodle bar, which moved into the former Tangier site on Main Street.

Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Momma Lo has been working her whole life to reach this point: a roof on her business, meat-smokers in the yard, and customers lining up with eager bellies.

After leaving behind an abusive relationship in Atlanta, she moved…

Jamie Redknapp gives baby son Raphael a Mohican in ridiculously cute new snaps

jamie redknapp son Jamie Redknapp’s son Raphael looked ultra-cool as he met football legend Ruud Gullit (Picture: Instagram/jamie.redknapp )

Jamie Redknapp is enjoying all the best things about being a new father – namely, giving your baby a funny hairstyle.

The former professional footballer, 48, welcomed baby Raphael with wife Frida Andersson, 38, in November last year, and has instantly become a devoted and doting father.

As tough as parenthood is, Jamie and Frida are loving life with their four-month-old son, with the former Liverpool star sharing sweet updates on family life to social media.

On Thursday, Jamie shared a ridiculously cute snap to Instagram showing off his son’s honestly incredible amount of hair, styled into an impressive Mohican.

In the photo, Raphael, dressed in a warm grey jumper, had his hair styled in a massive, messy Mohican, looking like he’d fit in fairly well with the punks on the streets of Camden.

Mum Frida could be seen in the background, keeping a protective arm on her son’s neck as Jamie took the photo.

He captioned it simply with a series of red heart emojis.

A second photo uploaded by the former pro footballer showed him in pure dad mode, pushing his son in a pram as the family enjoyed a walk in Hyde Park.

Current Renters to Benefit From 340 Mill Road Development in Etobicoke

Just east of the Toronto-Mississauga border is 340 Mill Road where a proposed infill building will replace a surface parking lot. Designed by BDP Quadrangle, the proposed 60.9-metre high building will be massed as a 5-storey podium above which another 14 storeys will rise. The new building has been designed to function as an integrated development with the 19-storey apartment building on the lot that was constructed in 1970s. The new building will add 191 purpose-built rental units to the site, while expanding the underground garage to serve both buildings.

Overview of the site the intersection of Burnhamthorpe Road and Mill Road, where there is an established cluster of residential buildings ranging in height from 12 – 22 storeys. Image via Google Maps.

The rezoning of the site was approved by City Council last week. As part of the zoning approval, the City and site owner Mohican Holdings negotiated a Section 37 funding of $1,500,000 to be put by the City towards improvements to Centennial Park (about a kilometre to the north) and/or to connect cycling infrastructure on Burnhamthorpe Road from Mill Road to the Etobicoke Creek west of which there is already cycling infrastructure in Mississauga. If the money is not used within three years, it can then be redirected by the City to another purpose that benefits the surrounding community.

New rendering of the proposed building, image courtesy of Quadrangle Architects.

The City is also requiring that the existing 225-unit apartment building’s units remain renat controlled for a minimum of another two decades, and that its residents be given full access to all of the new indoor and outdoor amenities of the proposed building at no extra cost. According to the proposal, these amenities could include a gym, rooftop patio, lawn, pet relief area. Current tenants of the existing…

GLEANINGS FROM THE CORN FLATS: Land acknowledgement, an invitation – The Daily Gazette

It is nigh to impossible to wholly address the history of Niskayuna or Schenectady (or any place in the United States for that matter) without first honestly coming to terms with the presence and contributions of the Indigenous People who occupied these lands before European arrival.

When Henry Hudson and Dutch East India Company first appeared in the region, and for several decades after, the territory was occupied, not always peacefully, by the Mohawk and Mohican Nations. By the time both Schenectady and Niskayuna were settled, conflict between the two Nations had forced the Mohican to the east side of the Hudson River.

The Mohawk were one of the five nations in the Iroquois (or Haudenosaunee) Confederation. Until the Revolutionary era, mutual interest in and mutual benefit from the fur trade, as well as the Dutch, and later the English, interest in a military alliance with the very powerful Confederation, contributed to a shared and jointly advantageous co-dependent relationship. In the years before American Independence was secured, grievances against the European/American settlers became more routine and severe; these grievances not only undermined the Iroquois-English alliance but also significantly weakened the once-powerful Iroquois Confederation. After the Treaty of Paris was signed, many Mohawk removed themselves to British Canada.

Nevertheless, the places we live today are irrevocably linked with the Mohawk people. Our city, county, and town names reflect their language. The “place beyond the pines,” or the Mohawk word “Schau-naugh-ta-da” (which actually referred to Albany), became Schenectady. Also, “Ca-nas-ti-gi-o-ne” (in one of its many spellings) or “extensive corn fields” became Niskayuna. Furthermore, becoming the “gateway to the west” was made possible with pre-war collaboration with the Mohawk and the rest of the Haudenosaunee Confederation.

We are today certainly aware that European infringement on Indigenous territory in our area and in North…
