Fans flock to Loudonville for annual Mohican Winterfest

Lots of sun, no snow or rain to dampen annual festival

LOUDONVILLE — Mike Bryant and Pam Bebout were looking for something to do Saturday.

They had planned to take in wrestling at the J.C. Gorman Invitational, held at Mansfield Senior High School, but spectators were not allowed because of precautions related to COVID-19.

The Lexington couple found a terrific alternative, the Mohican Winterfest in Loudonville.

Bryant and Bebout, who have been together for 29 years, had never been there before. They, like most people, were captivated by the ice carving demonstrations by Elegant Ice Creations, based in Broadview Heights.

“This is awesome,” Bryant said as George Niemoeller put the finishing touches on a Yoda sculpture. “These guys are artists.”

Bebout agreed.

“The detail that you can get out of a piece of ice is amazing,” she said.

Niemoeller was the first of three artists to carve a sculpture. Demonstrations took place at the top of each hour from 11 a.m-4 p.m.

“I’m obviously the sci-fi nerd of the group,” Niemoeller said of his Yoda creation.

He started with a 300-pound block of ice, getting it down to 150 to 175 pounds for the finished product.

Niemoeller told the crowd that ice sculptures differ from regular sculptures because they will not last forever. Sun, wind and rain are all factors.

In recent years, the Mohican Winterfest has often had to deal with warmer-than-normal temperatures that have melted many of the sculptures.

That was not an issue on a cloudless Saturday morning with temperatures in the 20s.

Because of the ideal conditions, many people made the downtown a bustling scene. Diners at the Black Fork Bistro were looking at a 45-minute wait for a…

Peter Wright, a darts player, takes two hours to do his mohawk, which he does with the help of his wife Joanne. » Brinkwire

Peter Wright, a darts player, spends two hours getting his mohawk done, with the help of his wife Joanne.

Peter Wright’s distinctive mohican and facial ‘war paint’ have made him the most recognisable darts star in the world, and he owes the transformation to his wife and daughter.

On Monday evening, Peter Wright will compete in his third PDC World Darts Championship final at Ally Pally, wearing his trademark mohawk and ‘war paint’.

Snakebite put on a memorable performance in their semi-final on Sunday, defeating fellow Scot Gary Anderson, and will now face Michael Smith after Bully Boy destroyed James Wade.

Wright is confident after winning the World Matchplay and Players Championship Finals in 2021, after becoming World Champion for the first time in 2020.

The 51-year-old began his career with the BDO in 1995, and he was unrecognizable without his now-familiar look, which his loved ones had crafted for him.

Jo, Peter’s manager and wife, is a hairdresser by trade and was instrumental in shaping Snakebite’s flamboyant look during his professional darts career.

She runs a salon in Lowestoft, Suffolk, called Medusa Hair, where she once spent nearly five hours perfecting a look for her other half.

“It takes about two hours every day in my chilling out time after practice,” he said in 2013.

“It’s down to my daughter because she’s the one who has all different color hair and I thought ‘I’ll try that,” she told the Mail.

“It was the first time any other dart player tried it, and it just stuck.”

Peter Wright unrecognisable without mohican haircut

Peter Wright is one of the most recognisable darts players in the world thanks to his eye-catching outfits, his sprayed mohican hair and also his ever-changing head paint.

With wife Jo helping him look his best for when he takes to the oche, Snakebite’s performances have skyrocketed since he took ownership of his new look – which he is rarely seen without.

However, there are times in which Wright has been seen without his trademark style, with no snake on the side of his head or colour and hairspray in his naturally white hair.

Wright joined the PDC back in 2004 following nine years of on-and-off performances in the BDO, having appeared in a plain black top with a more common hairstyle at the 1995 BDO World Darts Championship.

Wright told the Mail back in 2013: “It takes about two hours every day after practice in my chilling out time. I sit there chilling, and my wife Jo does my hair.

“It’s down to my daughter because she’s the one who has all different colour hair and I thought “I’ll try that”. No other dart players have tried it and it just stuck.

“I class it as going to war with my war paint on ready for battle.”

Jo who is also Peter’s manager, is a hairdresser by trade and has played a vital part in forming Snakebite’s flamboyant do during his time in professional darts.

She owns her own salon called Medusa Hair in Lowestoft, Suffolk, and once spent almost five hours perfecting a look for her other half.

Wright is currently ranked second in the world thanks to another fine year of earnings, having won the…

Irv Oslin on spurnpiking — from Cleveland’s back alleys to Mohican’s majestic forests

You're never sure what you'll find hiking in Mohican. And sometimes when you do find it, you're still not sure.

You’re never sure what you’ll find hiking in Mohican. And sometimes when you do find it, you’re still not sure.

On a recent hike to Lyons Falls, I remembered when I first saw this iconic Mohican landmark. It was around 35 years ago, maybe longer. I stumbled upon it while spurnpiking.

More: Knox County hike – climbing the Devil’s Backbone

“Spurnpiking” is a term used by us back roads aficionados. We spurn the interstates and turnpikes — opting for less-traveled roads. The more remote, the better. If they’re not paved, better still.

I’ve been a spurnpiker for as long as I can remember. As a boy growing up on the West Side of Cleveland, I constantly roamed the alleys. They were far more interesting than the busy streets that paralleled them.

Strolling down the narrow red brick alleyways, you learned a lot about your neighbors.

Their backyards revealed more about them than the fronts of their houses — with windows concealed behind overgrown hedges and veiled with yellowed lace curtains or tattered blinds.

From the alleys you could see so much more. You saw your neighbors’ laundry hanging out to dry. That told you how many people lived there, their gender and ages. And their proclivity for hygiene. You met their dogs, and occasionally raided their trash if you noticed something that looked interesting.

Mom never found any of it interesting and inevitably made me take it back to where I found it

Hanrahan hoping to finish on a high

Harness racing trainer Laurence Hanrahan is hoping to finish the West Coast circuit on a high with Last Of the Mohicans when he contests the Rosco Contractors LTD Reefton Cup (3200m) on Thursday.

By Joshua Smith, Harness News Desk

Trainer Laurence Hanrahan is hoping to finish the West Coast circuit on a high with Last Of the Mohicans when he contests the Rosco Contractors LTD Reefton Cup (3200m) on Thursday.

The son of Auckland Reactor was a beaten favourite in the Westport Cup (3200m) on Boxing Day when finishing fourth but backed up two days later to win the Caltex Westport Handicap Pace (2600m) in testing Heavy conditions.

Hanrahan was over the moon with the result but admitted the tough run and battle with Homebush Lad down the home straight has taken its toll on the gelding.

“It was pretty gutsy by both horses to fight it out like that,” Hanrahan said.

“When they went past me the other horse (Homebush Lad) had just headed him and for him to come back and get up was full credit to the horse and the drive (by Ricky May) was outstanding. You can’t beat an old head in those sort of races.

“He is a tired horse today (Wednesday). I am 50-50 as to whether I start him, but I think I will, you don’t often get the opportunity to race for $20,000 and only have 10 horses in it, in a field that he can be very competitive in.”

There will be a few weary legs in the Reefton Cup but Hanrahan said their biggest danger isn’t Last Of The Mohican’s 20m handicap, but Kiwi X Factor, who bypassed Tuesday’s meeting after winning the Westport Cup.

“The 20m isn’t really a concern because…
