The US states that are at their best during winter

The US is in the top five favourite holiday destinations among Britons. Around 3.8 million of us visit each year. So, after 18 months of exclusion, UK travellers will be rushing to American shores after November 8 – when the travel ban is set to lift.

A shopping trip in New York City may feature high on many winter wishlists. Christmas cheer, in short supply last year, can reach its full potential on the city’s ice rinks, while gazing up at its window displays or during a browse of its seasonal markets. Yet, upstate also deserves a closer look in the coldest season.

In fact, it can be argued that several states are at their best as a (relative) chill sets in. Skiing, nature-seeking, theme park hopping: activities abound among our selection. If you wish to be within the first cohort to reunite with our Atlantic neighbour, here’s where to try for a wintertime fix.

So why not celebrate our two countries’ reunion with a trip across the Atlantic this winter? From Boston to the Texas coast, here are some holiday suggestions to get you started.

Florida

Where better to get children excited for the frivolities of Christmas than in bejewelled theme parks? Disney World’s festivities kick off on November 12. At Magic Kingdom, young-at-heart visitors will enjoy ‘Disney Very Merriest After Hours’ – this includes a parade and fireworks – on select nights from November 8–December 21.

Orlando is easily combined with a couple of nights in Miami. Quieter beaches and milder weather make the party city a winning winter prospect (particularly for New Year’s Eve).

Families could layer the two, together with a sweet filling of Palm Beach on a 13-night self-drive trip for four, from £5,300pp (020 8682 5099; scottdunn.com). Alternatively, the Florida Keys can be…

Students get down and dirty with epic foam party for annual tradition

HUNDREDS of students got down and dirty today as they took part in an epic foam fight tradition.

The soapy scenes were held to mark Raisin Monday – an annual celebration at the University of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland.

Nuns, Romans and tartan-clad Scotsmen were among the costumes on show as students were lathered in snow-white froth.

One couple could be seen kissing through the crowd as others surfed the creamy white waves at shoulder height.

Raisin Weekend sees students celebrate a weekend of festivities with their mentors, playing pranks and silly games.

The tradition dates far back into the university’s history and comes after so-called “children” freshers gave their academic “parents” a pound of raisins to thank them for welcoming them to St Andrews.

In true tradition, freshers donned embarrassing costumes today as they were let loose on the Lower College lawn for an enormous shaving foam fight.

They were then given a good soaping – all to say thank you to their older pals.

Self-styled Mohicans stood high in the air as pals clung to each other laughing.

And not a dry costume was in sight as clothes were left sodden in the suds.

The University of St Andrews was founded in 1413.

Wednesday Wanderings: Harris Conservation Area

This month, I’m excited to visit Harris Conservation Area, one of the quieter, lesser-known Public Conservation Areas, to focus on a quieter, lesser-appreciated species: bats.

Harris Conservation Area is located at 105 Bloody Hollow Road in Austerlitz. If you’re using GPS, please be aware that there are two Bloody Hollow Roads in proximity, and you’ll want to make sure you’re heading to the intersection with Stonewall Road. The parking lot for this site is rather small, so we do not recommend it for group outings or large gatherings.

After you locate the parking lot, take a moment to reflect on the land you’re about to enjoy. Public Conservation Areas are located on the ancestral homelands of the Mohican people. Despite tremendous hardship in being forced from here, today their community resides in Wisconsin and is known as the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. This land is near the homelands of other Indigenous peoples and First Nations, including the Schaghticoke First Nations. Indigenous peoples continue efforts to steward the land today.

Before you leave the lot, we recommend texting 518.525.3252 with the phrase “harrismap” to get a copy of the trail map. You can also download a guided audio tour from the free TravelStorys app.

Harris is home to great bat habitat: the forest is relatively open, there are many woodland pools and a small pond that attracts many insects for the bats to chow on, and there are plenty of rocky cliffs and outcroppings for the bats to nest in. Most bats mate in late summer and early fall, so please be sure to stay on the trails in order to avoid disturbing them. Humans are a major spreader of white nose disease, which is having catastrophic impacts on bat populations throughout the world. Spores for white nose disease can last a long time on clothing and…

Girandole portrays the beautiful “Mohawk Last” – Reading Eagle

Dear Helaine and Joe: Can you tell me what I own and if it’s worth anything? There are glass prisms and brass figures, like American Indians and pilgrims. My mother insisted that I take it when she gave me a piano.

— SB

Dear SB:

I would like to thank your mother for giving you Girandole, which was probably made about 10 years before the Civil War.

The word Girandole means fireworks and candlesticks in Italian. The term sometimes refers to a convex mirror with two to four candle arms (sometimes a frame with an eagle on top), but rarely refers to a basket with flowers or a dragon / dolphin. There is also.

The overall idea was that the mirror would reflect the candlelight into a dark room, making things a little brighter.

Another type of Girandole included a central sconces with two sconces on the sides. All three were usually adorned with flower ropes with prisms hanging from the ends of the candle cups. The central parts of both the sconces and the two sconces were cast in brass or bronze (often gold-plated or sometimes silver-plated) and were figurative in shape.

There were flowers and jumping stag beetles, but there were also literary themes such as Robinson Crusoe, Uncle Tom and Eva, Lip Van Winkle, and most commonly Paul and Virginie. name.

The Girandole candlestick in today’s question is based on James Fenimore Cooper’s novel The Last of the Mohicans: The Story of 1757.

Novels and candlesticks take us to western New York during the French and Indian War. The candlestick shows the character of the Mohican chief Chingachgook sitting on a log with Natti Bumpo, also known as Hawkeye. Behind it stands Ankasu, the son of Chingachgook and the last Mohican.

The two…

What to watch on TV today? Saturday, October 2, 2021

15.00 / Movistar Drama

‘The last Mohican’

The last of the mohicans. United States, 1992 (108 minutes). Director: Michael Mann. Performers: Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe.

Fenimore’s classic – with the Mohicans’ struggle to conquer the wild American lands – has been brought to the screen by the most diverse directors. On this occasion, and with a large budget, this interesting version is presented, directed by Michael Mann and starring Daniel Day-Lewis. Some concessions to the gallery, but really entertaining.

15.25 / Paramount Channel

‘Waterworld’

United States, 1995 (130 minutes). Director: Kevin Reynolds. Performers: Kevin Costner, Dennis Hopper, Jeanne Tripplehorn.

In a post-atomic future, this film is developed, which was sold commercially as the most expensive in history. Kevin Costner will have to do with Dennis Hopper in this futuristic installment, which on many occasions recalls the series Mad Max. Cinephile winks and spectacular scenes for a film as wet (because of the water) as it is conventional in its result.

15.35 / The Sixth

‘Ocean’s eleven’

United States, 2001 (114 minutes). Director: Steven Soderbergh. Cast: George Clooney, Matt Damon, Andy García, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Cassey Affleck.

New version of The gang of eleven, a film directed in 1960 by Lewis Milestone and played by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. The result, as could be guessed by looking at the trajectory of its director, is shown as a remarkable and shocking movie of millionaire robberies that knew how to take advantage of the quality of a cast full of stars. A highly entertaining choral film, full of action, suspense and luxurious settings.

16.29 / AXN

‘Mission Impossible. Phantom Protocol ‘

Mission: Impossible. Ghost Protocol. United States, 2011…

Respect for Mohicans on the agenda for David McKay Wilson’s Indigenous People’s Day talks

Join USA TODAY NETWORK columnist David McKay Wilson to celebrate Indigenous People’s Day this weekend in the Hudson Valley.

On both Sunday and Monday, Wilson will explore the issue of respect as he shares the story of the Stockbridge-Munsie Community Band of Mohicans – also known as the Mohican Nation – whose people called the Hudson Valley their homelands for thousands of years before the Europeans showed up in 1604.

He’ll talk about the tribe’s Trail of Tears from the Hudson Valley on seven stops until they reached their forever home in 1936, with a fun casino and annual pow-wow to boot. He’ll also explore the Indian mascot issue in the Mahopac and Wappinger Falls school districts, where school boards still resist open public forums.

Wilson will speak Sunday at 11 a.m. in the historic shed at the Tompkins Corners Cultural Arts Center, 729 Peekskill Hollow Road, Putnam Valley.

On Indigenous People’s Day on Monday, he’ll speak at 7 p.m. at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, on the Old Post Road and East Elm Avenue in Staatsburgh.

Respect: Mohican Nation president says Hudson Valley districts disrespects the tribe

Forum: Wilson leads online conversation on Indian mascot in Mahopac
