The last fluent speaker of the Mohican language died nearly a century ago, but Brock Schreiber of Bowler is trying to find ways to revive the Indigenous language.

A citizen of the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Nation, he said some people still know words and phrases of the language on the reservation in and around Bowler where about 500 of the tribe’s 1,500 citizens live.

“The more I learn (the language), the more I understand how important it is,” Schreiber said. “In conversations with Menominee people and with different elders I’m learning that language is the key to everything from how we (Indigenous people) viewed things and our respect for each other and for everything around us.”

For the last several years, he has been working to restore the language through classes and potluck dinners and is currently working to establish more Mohican, or Mã’eekuneeweexthowãakun, language teachers.

“A lot of people in the community want to learn the language,” Schreiber said.

Manhunt as muggers target elderly woman at cashpoint

Police say they are hunting to men who robbed an elderly woman on her mobility scooter as she took cash from an ATM at the Lloyds Bank in Plymstock.

Investigators say the elderly woman on a mobility scooter approached the cashpoint machine, which sits at the corner of the Broadway shopping centre and Dean Hill, at 8.20am this morning.

Moments after she took the money she was approached by two men who snatched the money and fled on foot through the Broadway, turned right into the covered path which leads to the main car park and then to the middle of the car park where they got into a blacked BMW 3 or 5 series estate. The car had blacked out windows at the rear of the vehicle.

The first suspect was described as being in his mid 20s to early 30s, wearing a navy blue hooded jacket, hair hair cut very short at the sides and longer on top – almost a mohican-style – a pair of grey tracksuit bottoms and trainers.

The second man was of a similar age, more stocky, wearing a light or light grey coloured hoodie, dark trousers. Police believe he is of Eastern European appearance with slightly darker skin and stubble.

The first male arrived back at the car first while the second man appeared to take his time and arrive a few moments later.

Police believe that there were a number of people around the area at the time, including schoolchildren and parents, who may have seen part of the incident or the two men racing through the town, or even which route out of the car park the men took.

A police spokesperson…

House hit 3 times by vehicles running off road, property owner asking for help

BATON ROUGE – A repeat problem has one man calling 2 On Your Side for help. He says vehicles keep running into his house.

Robert Rogers has been working on fixing up a house at the corner of N. Foster Drive and Mohican Street. He’s determined to get it done, but each time he’s ready to move onto the next phase of the project, another vehicle comes barreling into his house.

“I’m trying to save it for my family,” Rogers said.

The property has been through a lot, including a fire. Rogers says it just needs a little TLC. But the project is currently stalled because of the repeat problem of cars running off the road and into the structure.

“Every time I get ready to fix it, somebody run into it. That’s the third time,” he said.

The latest incident happened about a month ago. Rogers says the driver was not insured and took out the bricks on one side of the house. The car’s bumper was left at the scene.

Rogers says each time a car runs off the road and into the house it sets him back. Instead of putting money into the house, he’s putting money into a problem created by someone else.

“And that’s hurting me. It’s hurting me big time,” he said.

It’s preventing him from moving on to the next steps of repairing the property, including electric, plumbing, sheetrock, windows, and flooring.

A street lamp near the corner illuminates the area, but it might not be enough. It’s why he’s contacted the city-parish for help and says he met with a city engineer last week. Rogers is requesting some sort of barricade be put near the corner to prevent drivers from losing control. The city-parish told him signs might do the trick.

“You…

UPDATED: Willard teen killed in Mohican Township crash

Sep. 29—MOHICAN TOWNSHIP — A Willard teen was killed and a Greenwich teen hospitalized after a single-vehicle crash in Mohican Township on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Ashland Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The driver has been identified as Owen Ray Feichtner, 16, of Willard, and a student at South Central High School. He died at the scene of the crash.

The passenger has been identified as Anthony Ray Morrison, 16, from Greenwich. He was treated and released from UH Samaritan Medical Center in Ashland.

The incident took place on Ohio 179 near Township Road 405 at about 4:10 p.m. Troopers responded to the scene and found an SUV on its top in a bean field.

According to the Patrol, the vehicle was traveling south on Ohio 179, when it overtook a vehicle in a no-passing zone, lost control, drove left of center, over-corrected, went off the right side of the road, struck a ditch, and overturned multiple times.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office, Jeromesville Fire/EMS, and White’s Towing.

Speed is considered to be a factor in the crash. Drugs and or alcohol do not appear to be involved.

The incident remains under investigation.

Feichtner was remembered by everybody on Facebook.

Tiffany Fry: Our hearts are broken for The Feichtner Family.

Owey was Addy’s big brother, best friend, pig-showing best buddy! He looked out for her in every way possible! Owen Feichtner was loved by so many especially us and we will always hold our memories of him close!

Hold your loved ones extra close, kiss them one more time before you walk out the door life is just unfair!

Patti Seidel: I am numb. I’m so heartbroken for our SC family and for Feichtner family. I’m not sure how we will get through tomorrow and the next day…

Living ‘Bee Fences’ Protect Farmers from Elephants, and Vice Versa

In the African bush in southern Kenya, Lucy King watched an elephant nicknamed Mohican rest under an acacia tree, seemingly nonplussed by an overhead beehive. It was 2007, and King had just published a behavioral study confirming a belief, widely held by Indigenous communities for thousands of years, that elephants are terrified of bees. “I was completely thrown by this,” King says, recalling the day she sat watching the untroubled matriarch. “I was like ‘No!’”

Bees tend to sting elephants around the eyes, behind the ears, in the mouth and even inside the trunk. For her research, King, a zoologist and head of the Human-Elephant Co-Existence Program at the nonprofit organization Save the Elephants (STE), had documented families of elephants running from bees, kicking up dust and shaking their head as if trying to knock bees out of the air. Even recordings of buzzing bees that King played in the bush led to elephants running and“warning” others as they fled.

Fortunately, observing Mohican on that hot day, King eventually realized what now seems obvious: for the bees to scare elephants, the insects must be swarming. King asked her research assistant to chuck a stone at the hive, “and then suddenly, the bees just erupted,” King says. “And the elephants just fled.”

That aha! moment led King to sketch a novel design for using live beehives as “fences” to protect farm crops from foraging elephants. The goal was to reduce human-elephant conflicts, which increased significantly in parts of Africa in the 2000s. Kenya has seen some recovery of its population of the pachyderms in recent decades, thanks to conservation efforts there—although the total population of African elephants has declined dramatically in the same time period, King says. Meanwhile sub-Saharan Africa’s human population rose from about 870 million to…

Where Was The Last Of The Mohicans Actually Filmed?

For point of reference, the Blue Ridge Mountains largely run through Western North Carolina, though they stretch into parts of several other states. And yes, they’re a long way from the Adirondacks.

But per MovieLocations.com, most of “The Last of the Mohicans” production indeed went down in The Old North State. Specifically, the film was largely shot just outside of Asheville, NC and the nearby DuPont State Recreational Forest. In terms of jaw-dropping mountain views, “The Last of the Mohicans” could not have been better served by the region’s lush forests, lakes, and riverside settings. Some of the key shooting locations, as Greensboro News and Record boasted in 1992, were at Lake James in Morganton, the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area, and Asheville’s Biltmore Estate.

Mann made particularly good use of the area’s abundant water falls, with the Hickory Nut Falls proving a truly stunning backdrop for the film’s final showdown between Means’ Chingachgook, and Wes Studi’s Huron warrior Magua. Ditto for the aptly-named Bridal Veil Falls, behind which Day-Lewis’ Hawkeye utters the famous line, “Stay alive no matter what occurs. I will find you.” — though the scene itself was apparently shot on a soundstage. And as for the picaresque Triple Falls Hawkeye and the gang traverse en route to safety, they’re every bit as lovely in “The Last of the Mohicans” as they were in 2012’s “The Hunger Games.”

As it is, if you’re ever in the Asheville area, you can actually visit most of the film’s more prominent locations. And if you’re a fan of the film, that trip would be well worth your time.

Oleksandr Usyk’s best hairstyles before Anthony Joshua bout from top-knot to mohican

Oleksandr Usyk will take on Anthony Joshua with a shaved head in north London this weekend – which is a long way from the standout styles he has opted for in the past.

The undefeated Ukrainian is looking to claim heavyweight glory in only his third fight in the division by beating his British foe, and goes into the bout full of confidence.

The 34-year-old has 18 victories to his name from 18 professional bouts, and has regularly got the better of his opponents with unpredictable antics before the fight has even begun.

As part of his character and culture, Usyk has had a mix of unusual hairstyles in the past, and Central Recorder Sport has taken a look at three of the most memorable before he steps into the ring vs Joshua.

One of his most unusual offerings has been the Ukrainian top knot style he had back in 2013.

With his hairline shaved to the back of the skull, a long piece of hair is kept which can be tied into a topknot, as was seen in many of his cruiserweight bouts.

The traditional style is part of Ukrainian culture, and…
