County fairs are wrapping up and cooler weather is finally settling in. Take advantage of these fall days and have some fun. If you feel like venturing out, I’ll be highlighting attractions, activities, and festivals right here, every week. From local music and shows to options for those of you who don’t mind traveling a bit, there’s something for everyone. Be sure to check all activities as cancellations can occur. The events listed are for Sept. 23 to Oct. 2. 

Today

Barnesville Pumpkin Festival. Tucked away in the hills of Southeastern Ohio is one of the best fall festivals around. The Barnesville Pumpkin festival brings all things pumpkin to the area. Carnival rides, food and craft vendors and more await you at this three-day event. Two stages will provide live entertainment and a Giant Pumpkin Parade will be held Saturday morning. Friday

Mountain Highway. Head to Guernsey County’s only opera house to hear some of the best bluegrass around. The Pennyroyal Opera House in Fairview presents Mountain Highway, a family band out of Lynchville, WV. The doors open at 5 p.m., as well as the kitchen. Saturday

Columbus Coffee Festival. Make your way to the capitol city and try some java. The sixth annual Columbus Coffee Festival takes place Saturday and Sunday at The Ohio Village. Pittsfield’s October First Friday Artswalk to include live music, open studios

PITTSFIELD — Pittsfield’s next First Fridays Artswalk will be held Friday, Oct. 1 from 5–8 p.m. and include new indoor art shows and Indoors Out! Music on North. New for October, visitors can download the Downtown Pittsfield app to follow a virtual walking tour of art and music.

From 5­–7 p.m., Downtown Pittsfield, Inc. will present free outdoor performances as part of Indoors Out! Music on North. Singer-songwriter Jaane Doe will perform at Sotille Park, 200 North Street; freestyle acoustic rocker Garrin Benfield will be at Persip Park, 175 North Street; and musical trio The Midnight Anthem, will perform at the Marketplace Cafe’s parklet at 53 North Street.

The Berkshire Art Association (BAA) will present “DISTILLATIONS, An Art Show,” at The Lichtenstein Center for the Arts, 28 Renne Ave., through November 28. The exhibit features work by Peg Dotchin, Jesse Tobin McCauley, and Ilene Spiewak.

MCLA Pittsfield, 66 Allen Street, will host an art show by Ian Mosher through October 31. The show will feature art centered on traditional and legendary monster themes, as well as unique visions that run through the artist’s mind. The result is a collection that is an homage to Halloween.

NUarts, 311 North Street, will host an Open Studios event with artists Caroline Kelley, Shany Porras, Ilene Richard, and Sally Tiska Rice. The heartbeat of the Great Mohican Pow-Wow roared to life again on Friday after a year of silence. The 36th annual, three-day event held at the confluence of Ashland, Holmes and Knox counties kicked off with traditional music of the Andes Mountains by Malkuri.

Robbie Swift, the event’s organizer, planned activities for every half-hour — each led by Native American or First Nation people, who are indigenous to Canada. Activities included storytelling, tomahawk throwing, a flute act and fire starting demos.

Butterfly Release. The 17th annual Valley Hospice Memorial Butterfly Release will take place at two locations this year. Honor your loved ones who have passed away and release a butterfly. Butterflies can be purchased for $7. In case of rain, butterflies can be picked up at the event. The release will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Oglebay Park Anne Kuchinka Amphitheater in Wheeling and at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Fort Steuben Park Berkman Amphitheater in Steubenville. Sept. 25

Oktoberfest at Mohican. Hosted by the Friends of Wolf Creek Grist Creek Mill, Oktoberfest brings live music and more than 75 types of beer to Mohican. Those over 21 can purchase a ticket for $5 and sample beers from all over Ohio and beyond. Busses will be transporting guests to the event from various spots in the area and the Ohio State football game will be up on the big screen. Games and live music round out the day, as well as a variety of food vendors. The event is scheduled to run from noon to 11 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at www.wolfcreekmill.com, and the bussing routes can be found there also. When Gary Devine was picked to run for England, the manager took one look at him and asked: “You’re gonna represent your country looking like that?!” Devine had turned up with shocking pink hair, holes in his jeans, a worn out band T-shirt and unlaced Doc Martens. Not that such a punky image stopped him becoming British fell running champion, after a race up Ben Nevis, the UK’s tallest mountain, in 1990. “Years later the manager told us that Gary had changed his life,” smiles Debbie Devine, Gary’s wife and coach. “He said ‘I learned not to judge a book by its cover.’”

Thirty one years on, Devine’s wonderful and often very funny story is told in a new book, Faster! Louder! How a Punk Rocker from Yorkshire Became British Champion Fell Runner. Author Boff Whalley was previously vocalist/guitarist in Leeds anarcho-punk band Chumbawamba, but is a fell runner too. “I got into it after seeing Gary win a race and recognising him from punk gigs,” he says as we all convene on Zoom. “It made me think ‘I could do that’. But Gary’s story is more extreme than mine. It needed writing.”

Devine grew up in hilly Ilkley, where he thought it was “quite normal” to run up and down the moors. “There was a big running section at our school,” he explains. “About 40 or 50 of us would go out on a lunchtime.”
