FALL ROUND UP GRAZIER MEETING: Trowbridge Farms, in Ghent, Columbia County, is hosting the 2021 Fall Round Up Grazier Meeting on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 from 1:00 to 4:00pm. This annual meeting, organized by Cornell Cooperative Extension – Albany County is an opportunity for livestock owners of all species to get together. This year the program topics will be: safe livestock handling facilities on a low budget, working animals for livestock (herding dogs and guard animals), managing pasture in difficult circumstances such as severe weather and dominating weeds. As always, there will be a discussion of the business of grazing, including profit versus cash flow, the importance of record keeping, and the real value of good community relations. HUNDREDS of students got down and dirty today as they took part in an epic foam fight tradition.

The soapy scenes were held to mark Raisin Monday – an annual celebration at the University of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland.

Nuns, Romans and tartan-clad Scotsmen were among the costumes on show as students were lathered in snow-white froth.

One couple could be seen kissing through the crowd as others surfed the creamy white waves at shoulder height.

Raisin Weekend sees students celebrate a weekend of festivities with their mentors, playing pranks and silly games.

The tradition dates far back into the university’s history and comes after so-called “children” freshers gave their academic “parents” a pound of raisins to thank them for welcoming them to St Andrews.

In true tradition, freshers donned embarrassing costumes today as they were let loose on the Lower College lawn for an enormous shaving foam fight.

They were then given a good soaping – all to say thank you to their older pals.

Self-styled Mohicans stood high in the air as pals clung to each other laughing.

And not a dry costume was in sight as clothes were left sodden in the suds.

The University of St Andrews was founded in 1413.

This month, I’m excited to visit Harris Conservation Area, one of the quieter, lesser-known Public Conservation Areas, to focus on a quieter, lesser-appreciated species: bats.

Harris Conservation Area is located at 105 Bloody Hollow Road in Austerlitz. If you’re using GPS, please be aware that there are two Bloody Hollow Roads in proximity, and you’ll want to make sure you’re heading to the intersection with Stonewall Road. The parking lot for this site is rather small, so we do not recommend it for group outings or large gatherings.

After you locate the parking lot, take a moment to reflect on the land you’re about to enjoy. Public Conservation Areas are located on the ancestral homelands of the Mohican people. Despite tremendous hardship in being forced from here, today their community resides in Wisconsin and is known as the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. This land is near the homelands of other Indigenous peoples and First Nations, including the Schaghticoke First Nations. Indigenous peoples continue efforts to steward the land today.

Harris is home to great bat habitat: the forest is relatively open, there are many woodland pools and a small pond that attracts many insects for the bats to chow on, and there are plenty of rocky cliffs and outcroppings for the bats to nest in. Most bats mate in late summer and early fall, so please be sure to stay on the trails in order to avoid disturbing them.
