LOUDONVILLE – With a couple of new activities on the agenda, the 2022 Mohican Winterfest, the village’s mid-winter extravaganza, will run Friday through Sunday, Jan. 7-9, downtown.

New to the Winterfest, according to a schedule provided by Valerie Spreng, executive director of the sponsoring Loudonville-Mohican Chamber of Commerce, will be a show of vintage and newer snowmobiles in Central Park from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, along with a Poker Walk, sponsored by American Legion Post 257, running from 1-4 p.m. Saturday and starting at the Legion on South Water Street.

Vehicle strikes school building: School to resume Monday for McMullen students after truck strikes building

A tradition at the Winterfest for the past seven or eight years is the Model Train Expo, again to be set up in the Loudonville Fair Building on North Street downtown. Model train enthusiasts will set up their train displays in the fair building, which will be open for public viewing Friday from 4-8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

Learn how to make a hiking stick

Activities will begin Friday at 1 p.m. at the Mohican State Park Class A campground, on state Route 3 a mile south of Loudonville, when a demonstration on how to make a hiking stick will be conducted.

Also, on tap Friday will be entertainment at the Ugly Bunny Winery, located a mile east of the village on state Route 39, by Tyler Chaffee.

Friday at 7 p.m., and again at 7 on Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday, the Ohio Theatre on North Water Street will show the movie “Spider Man No Way Home.”

Ice sculptors and specialists from Elegant Ice Creations, located in Broadview Heights, will set up the Winterfest’s iconic ice sculptures starting late Friday afternoon.

You’re never sure what you’ll find hiking in Mohican. And sometimes when you do find it, you’re still not sure.

On a recent hike to Lyons Falls, I remembered when I first saw this iconic Mohican landmark. It was around 35 years ago, maybe longer. I stumbled upon it while spurnpiking.

“Spurnpiking” is a term used by us back roads aficionados. We spurn the interstates and turnpikes — opting for less-traveled roads. The more remote, the better. If they’re not paved, better still.

I’ve been a spurnpiker for as long as I can remember. As a boy growing up on the West Side of Cleveland, I constantly roamed the alleys. They were far more interesting than the busy streets that paralleled them.

Strolling down the narrow red brick alleyways, you learned a lot about your neighbors.

Their backyards revealed more about them than the fronts of their houses — with windows concealed behind overgrown hedges and veiled with yellowed lace curtains or tattered blinds.

From the alleys you could see so much more. You saw your neighbors’ laundry hanging out to dry. That told you how many people lived there, their gender and ages. And their proclivity for hygiene. You met their dogs, and occasionally raided their trash if you noticed something that looked interesting.

Harness racing trainer Laurence Hanrahan is hoping to finish the West Coast circuit on a high with Last Of the Mohicans when he contests the Rosco Contractors LTD Reefton Cup (3200m) on Thursday.

Trainer Laurence Hanrahan is hoping to finish the West Coast circuit on a high with Last Of the Mohicans when he contests the Rosco Contractors LTD Reefton Cup (3200m) on Thursday.

The son of Auckland Reactor was a beaten favourite in the Westport Cup (3200m) on Boxing Day when finishing fourth but backed up two days later to win the Caltex Westport Handicap Pace (2600m) in testing Heavy conditions.

Hanrahan was over the moon with the result but admitted the tough run and battle with Homebush Lad down the home straight has taken its toll on the gelding.

“It was pretty gutsy by both horses to fight it out like that,” Hanrahan said.

“When they went past me the other horse (Homebush Lad) had just headed him and for him to come back and get up was full credit to the horse and the drive (by Ricky May) was outstanding. You can’t beat an old head in those sort of races.

“He is a tired horse today (Wednesday). I am 50-50 as to whether I start him, but I think I will, you don’t often get the opportunity to race for $20,000 and only have 10 horses in it, in a field that he can be very competitive in.”

There will be a few weary legs in the Reefton Cup but Hanrahan said their biggest danger isn’t Last Of The Mohican’s 20m handicap, but Kiwi X Factor, who bypassed Tuesday’s meeting after winning the Westport Cup.

(Marion) During the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a critical need for nurses. In response, a professional nursing group is sponsoring a $400 annual scholarship to help a nursing student make it to graduation.

Mohican District 5 of the Ohio Nurses Association, a state professional nursing group, donated $2,400 to the Marion Technical College Foundation to create this new scholarship fund.

“The Mohican District 5 wanted to extend our support to future nurses in completing their education,” said Carolyn Kaple, treasurer for the group.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a senior nursing student at Marion Tech. The student must live in Ashland, Crawford, Marion, Morrow or Richland Counties. The student must be in the good standing in the nursing program, have at least a 3.0 grade point average, and submit a letter of recommendation from a nursing instructor.

“This will help a talented, qualified student with financial need make it to graduation,” said Cindy Hartman, director of the nursing program at Marion Tech. “We value the support of this professional nursing group in helping our nursing students succeed.”

The Marion Tech Foundation asks for scholarship applications and FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) each year by May 1 and awards the scholarships for the following fall semester.

“The Mohican District 5 provided an initial donation of $2,400 to this scholarship fund and it may be supplemented by supportive members of the community,” Kaple said.

This generous gift is gratefully received by the Marion Tech Foundation.

“It’s a hallmark of belief in our students to support their education,” said Mike Stuckey, director of the Marion Tech Foundation. “Kaple is a past Marion Tech nursing instructor and believes in our program and our students.”

LOUDONVILLE, Ohio – A Maple Heights man was hospitalized early Sunday after he crashed his pickup truck into an elementary school following a high-speed chase with state troopers.

The incident began about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, when the state highway patrol received a call about an erratic driver on Interstate 71 northbound, a news release from the Mansfield post of the highway patrol says. A trooper attempted to pull over the 25-year-old Maple Heights man.

The man briefly pulled his 2011 Dodge Ram truck toward the right berm of the freeway, but when the trooper began approaching the truck, the man sped away, the news release says. The pickup truck got off of I-71 north and sped along U.S. Route 30 and Ohio Route 60 before driving into Loudonville, a small village just outside of Mohican State Park in Ashland County.

Once in Loudonville, the Maple Heights man “failed to maintain control” of his pickup truck and struck McMullen Elementary School, the new release states. First responders treated the driver at the scene before he was taken to Mansfield Ohio Health Medical Center for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Charges are pending against the driver, state troopers say. Authorities believe the Maple Heights man was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, and alcohol may have been a factor in the chase and subsequent crash.

Nine catering establishments (F&B) in Singapore were penalized for violating safety management measures (SMM) over the past weekend.

This was announced by the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Environment (MSE) today (December 22).

Seven ordered to close

Seven of the F&B outlets have been ordered to close for violation of MMS and MMS differentiated by vaccination (VDS).

The seven points of sale are:

Ohio is home to beautiful parks, hiking trails and nature scenes that are accessible in all seasons. Here are some great places to enjoy this beauty during the winter months. 

Local Dayton area

Twin Valley Trail

This trail system is located in southwest Ohio, not far from the downtown Dayton area. It is accessible from a few different parks including Germantown Main Park.

The trail loops to connect with other systems and spans 49 miles according to Five Rivers MetroParks. Hikers of all levels can participate in short two-mile hikes or longer, more advanced hikes.

The park is open all year and is suitable for backpackers. It also features small campsites hikers can reserve to stay the night on the trail. 

Statewide

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Those looking for a moderate winter hiking adventure can check out the trails in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. 

This park, located in Peninsula Ohio, offers trails for all levels of hikers. Those looking for an easier path can go on trails like Ledges Trail and Pine Grove Trail. Those looking for a slightly more difficult adventure can check out the Wetmore Bridle trail, all located in the Park.

The park is open 24/7 all year round, excluding national holidays, and holds no entrance fee.

Mohican State Park

Those looking for a more challenging course can try the Hemlock Gorge Loop in Mohican State Park. 

Hikers have highly reviewed this 11.9-mile hike through the northern Ohio Forrest. The trail is geared towards moderately to highly experienced hikers, especially during the winter months.

TENNERTON — The Buckhannon- Upshur High School boys’ basketball team (1-0), coming off an upset win over #8 Wheeling Park in their season opener, quickly had to refocus and turn their attention to a new challenge as they prepared to welcome West Virginia AAAA’s preseason #1 ranked team, the Morgantown Mohicans (0-0) to Tennerton. 

The trip to Buckhannon was the first action of the season for the Mohicans, who were seeking to live up to their lofty preseason expectations against the B- U team that had already proved to be a dangerous opponent. It was an electric atmosphere at tip-off, as Coach Travis Foster’s team squared up for a powerhouse match-up with the state’s top-ranked team. The Bucs’ opened the game with a solid defensive performance in the first quarter, holding the Mohicans to only 14 points. The boys slowed the pace of the game, opting to methodically run their offense, using off the ball movement and crisp passes to generate a couple good looks around the rim for versatile senior forward Lamar Hurst, but for the most part points were hard to come by for both teams early. At the end of the first quarter, the Bucs trailed 14-9.

In the second quarter, the Mohicans found a rhythm and started to heat up, scoring 15 points in the second quarter, while holding the Bucs to only 10. Going into the locker-room for halftime, the team found themselves in striking distance, only trailing the Mohicans by 10, 29-19. 

Senior combo guard Harrison Walker, hit a tough mid-range early in the third quarter to trim the deficit to briefly single dights, but that is as close as the Bucs would come. The Mohicans responded by going on a big run, as part of a 24-point third quarter explosion that allowed them…
