the only residence in the US designed by ai weiwei becomes the base for the ‘forge project’, an initiative that supports indigenous leaders and communities working in the arts, food sovereignty, language revitalization, and more. originally called ‘tsai residence’, the house in upstate new york was realized by ai weiwei in collaboration with HHF architects in 2008, with a guest house addition in 2011. sold for $4.9 million earlier this year, the 3 bedroom dwelling is now known as ‘forge house’ and it will host a range of programs, serving as a forum for events and exhibitions, and as a workspace and home for four new forge project fellows.

forge house is situated in the hudson valley on unceded, traditional, and ancestral lands of an indigenous community called the muh-he-con-ne-ok. forge project encompasses four main elements: the fellowship program; a farming and ecological education program in partnership with sky high farms to combat food insecurity in the region; a lending collection of artworks from indigenous and hudson valley artists, which is on rotating view at forge project by appointment; and an alliance with the gochman family foundation, which provides direct monetary support to community organizations in the region.

Columbus police detectives have arrested suspects in four homicides in the city, as well as a suspect in a homicide in Westerville, in the last week. 

On Tuesday night, Coshocton County Sheriff’s Special Response Team deputies assisted Columbus police in arresting 19-year-old Talent Bradley, of Coshocton, at a home on the 700 block of Elm Street there. Bradley, who was taken into custody without incident, has been charged in connection to two separate homicides.

Detectives have accused Bradley of stabbing 63-year-old Randy Gwirtz to death inside Gwirtz’s home on the 1400 block of Fahlander Drive South, located in Columbus’ Woodward Park neighborhood off of Karl Road. Gwirtz was found on June 7 after relatives said they had not been able to get in touch with him for several days. 

Bradley is also accused of killing 62-year-old Robert Goodrich on May 27 inside Goodrich’s home on the 600 block of Mohican Way near Cherrington Elementary School in Westerville. 

Both men are believed to have been stabbed to death on May 26, according to Westerville police.

Court records show Bradley was identified by Columbus police homicide detectives who were able to trace a vehicle registered to Bradley that was seen on surveillance video near Goodrich’s home, as well as cellphone records that indicated Bradley had searched for Gwirtz’s address prior to his death.

Westerville police also said Bradley met both men through the dating app Grindr.

Bradley is currently being held in the Coshocton County jail and will be extradited back to Franklin County.

STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. – Members of the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Community are conducting an archaeological dig on the banks of the Housatonic River, their ancestral home.

•  Land seizures and forced removals caused the tribe to relocate to Wisconsin in the 1800s

• Projects like these allow current members to stay connected to their ancestral lands

“Our time in Stockbridge is a huge part of our history,” said tribal historic preservation manager, Bonney Hartley. “It’s part of our ancient history, but also in the 18th century, it was a colonial town, called ‘Indiantown’. It was founded specifically for our people, so direct ancestors of mine and everyone in our tribe today all come back to our time in Stockbridge.”

They’re looking for evidence of a 1783 ox roast, organized by George Washington to thank members of the tribe for their service in the Revolutionary War.

“We’re hoping to find evidence of possibly the ox roast feast itself,” said Hartley. “So for example, evidence of the cooking materials for the ox, which was described as like a 1,100-pound ox that was brought here, or where the spit or where the other kinds of cooking implements were.”

Monday was the first day of digging at the site, and they haven’t found anything yet. However, thanks to previous surveys, archaeologist Nathan Allison is pretty sure they’re going to make a discovery.

“We’ve identified a number of anomalies to ground-truth, or excavate, and see what we see under there,” said Allison. “So a number of those things were metallic objects like large iron objects, or burned features, which might…

10 Investigates review of two years’ worth of police records and incident reports submitted to the state show a recurring pattern of incidents there.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Citing “substantiated findings of a significant nature,” Ohio is threatening to suspend admissions of teens and revoke the license of Mohican Young Star Academy – a youth behavioral treatment facility in Ashland County.

10 Investigates review of two years’ worth of police records and incident reports submitted to the state show a recurring pattern of incidents there – including teens who routinely run away from the facility, staff who allege they’ve been injured and assaulted by teens and teens claiming they too were harmed during restraint holds by staff members.

In its July 27 letter to Mohican Young Star Academy, the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services notes that the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office has responded more than 100 times to the facility in the past 18 months “to manage crisis situations at the facility.”

Because of the drain on resources and the recurring number of incidents, the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office told 10 Investigates Thursday that as of July, it will no longer serve as the primary responding agency to the facility. 

Instead, it has asked to serve as a backup agency responding when the Ohio Department of Natural Resources or Ohio State Highway Patrol requests help.

Body camera video obtained by 10 Investigates shows deputies have expressed frustration about returning to the facility for a repeated pattern of events.

“Now I am down here filing two separate assault reports,” one sheriff’s deputy can be heard saying after he had responded to the facility three times in the span of a week – each time to file an assault report on an unruly teen.

Robbie Williams’ took matters into his own hands at the weekend when his son wanted to look just like him.

Charlie, six, requested the same Mohican hairstyle as his singer dad and he duly obliged with the family clippers.

In a video filmed by Robbie’s wife, and Charlie’s mum Ayda Field, Robbie set to work giving his son the makeover.

“So what’s happening, daddy?” Ayda asked, to which 47-year-old Robbie responded: “Charlie wants a mohawk.”

Looking like he had done it before, Robbie skillfully shaved his son’s head, as the youngster was seemingly oblivious playing a golf game on his phone.

Clearly proud of his own work, Robbie gave a thumbs up to the camera afterwards.

The prevailing version of history has been that Native Americans didn’t actually live in the Berkshire area prior to the founding of Indiantown (Stockbridge). They were just passing through, for hunting, trade or interacting with other tribes. Well, it’s easy to see how, if colonists of European extraction were appropriating Native American land, that would be a convenient truth.

But a series of archaeological digs and research is amassing evidence that Indigenous people, known as the ancestors to their Mohican descendants, maintained permanent residences here prior to the time of contact. The latest evidence, and perhaps the most convincing, is the discovery of a probable Indigenous dwelling behind the newly discovered first meetinghouse site on Main Street in Stockbridge.

Stockbridge archaeological dig involves community, aims to correct historical interpretation

Joseph Park’s bicentennial history of Pownal, Vt., tends toward semi-permanent winter hunting camps as the extent of Native American presence, yet he also describes the many artifacts collected along the Hoosic River by Alonzo Whipple in the 19th century and the nearly 500 that Gordon Sweeney accumulated in the 20th century. Most of Sweeney’s are at the University of Vermont, although some reside at the Solomon Wright Library in Pownal.

When it came time to relocate a bridge in Pownal in 1979, Peter Thomas of the Vermont Agency of Transportation cited the discovery of those two men that there were arrow and spear points going back to 4000 B.C., concluding an “annual settlement pattern.” There were also tantalizing stories of cornfields, suggesting more permanent residence.

The narrative clarified in 1990 when David W. Parrott, archaeologist with the Mahingan Institute in Monterey, discovered a variety of stone tools and traced the source of the stone not to the west but to an ancient quarry in Monterey. These seemed to indicate a…

LOUDONVILLE — Thousands of wooded acres greet visitors to the Mohican region. Mohican State Park’s wild landscape offers truly stunning views from both land and water.

Clear Fork Gorge, Lyon’s Falls, and the Mohican State Scenic River are just a few of the must-sees for adventurers. Overnight accommodations include a modern full-service lodge, large family campground with pool, deluxe vacation cabins, and a primitive camping area with stream-side sites.

Nearby Pleasant Hill Lake, which is managed by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District, offers boating with no horsepower limits. A portion of the lake is no-wake speed, enjoyed by paddlers and anglers alike.

HISTORY

The Mohican State Park area was once the hunting grounds of the Delaware Native Americans, whose more famous warriors included Janacake, Bill Montour, Thomas Lyon, and James Smith. Smith was the first white man to come to this area after he was captured by the Native Americans and later adopted into their tribe. Several Delaware villages were also located in the Mohican vicinity.

European settlers began arriving at the turn of the 19th century, but settlement did not increase until the Native Americans were driven from the area after the War of 1812. John Chapman, immortalized as Johnny Appleseed, frequented the region during the 1800s, caring for his apple tree nurseries.

His name and the date, carved into the wall of Lyons Falls, were an attraction for years. Unfortunately, the etchings have been worn away over time.

Prior to 1949, most of the area that comprises the present state park was part of Mohican State Forest. The forest lands were administered by the Ohio Division of Forestry.
