The Nanticoke Fire Department’s request for a fire engine to cross the Nanticoke/West Nanticoke Bridge for emergencies has been denied “after careful consideration and review,” Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo informed city Fire Chief Mark Boncal Monday.

“The bridge does not have adequate capacity for the proposed emergency vehicle due to the deteriorated diagonal tie bar member which is limiting the capacity of the bridge,” Crocamo said in the communication.

Crocamo provided a copy of the load rating analysis to Boncal and indicated the information also was provided to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Crocamo announced in May the weight limit of the county-owned span over the Susquehanna River was reduced to 5 tons. The decision was made after a review of the bridge inspection report, discussions with PennDOT and “in consideration of public safety,” she had said.

Passenger vehicles are permitted under the reduced weight limit but not fire trucks and emergency rescue vehicles, officials have said.

Nanticoke’s fire department relied on the bridge to provide primary fire/rescue coverage to Plymouth Township’s West Nanticoke area on the other side of the river. Depending on location, other township sections are covered by fire departments in Larksville, Plymouth and Lake Silkworth.

These fire coverage changes stemmed from the 2019 disbanding of the township’s Tilbury Fire and Rescue Station primarily due to financial issues.

Without the exemption, the city fire truck must reach Plymouth Township by crossing the river over the alternate route now in effect — the John S. Fine Bridge, which is the official name of the Route 29/South Cross Valley Expressway span.

Nanticoke’s engine/pumper weighs 42,000 pounds, which equates to 21 tons, Boncal has said.

Now that the state awarded $10 million toward the Nanticoke/West Nanticoke Bridge, Luzerne County must follow state procedures to advance the project, county Manager Romilda Crocamo told council Monday.

Those steps include seeking an engineering firm to provide three options that consider rehabilitation, replacement and preservation of the county-owned span over the Susquehanna River, she said. The engineering solicitation will be posted through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Electronic Construction Management System, she said.

Prior to Crocamo’s hiring last year, the administration had authorized payment of up to $631,900 to Alfred Benesch and Associates to examine the bridge and recommend the “best and most economical option.”

But Crocamo, who announced the state award in April, said she was informed fresh analysis must be completed through state protocols.

Benesch originally recommended largely replacing the existing bridge for an estimated $40.5 million but later advocated construction of a new bridge to the west, which would cost an estimated $63 million with the expense of tearing down the current bridge factored in. A third option to mostly rehabilitate the existing span would cost $47.8 million and was not supported by Benesch or council.

Crocamo said a new analysis could yield additional options not yet considered — namely tearing down the existing span and building a new one on the same footprint.

The option to build a new one to the west largely stemmed from a desire to keep the current bridge operational during construction, but there are caveats to that scenario. Millions of dollars in repairs could be necessary to keep the current bridge open, and the span was downgraded to a 5-ton weight limit in May.

Theodore E. Czerwinski

Theodore E. Czerwinski, 90, of Duncansville, passed away Saturday. He was born in Nanticoke, son of the late Anthony and Mary (Jesuit) Czerwinski. He married Norma Hicks in 1958.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years; three daughters: Terry McClellan, Shelley Roadarmel and Dawn Paul; a son, Kevin; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Wayne, in 2019.

Ted graduated from Nanticoke High School in 1952 and retired from the FAA in 1997 after 41 years as an air traffic controller.

He served in the USAF from 1952-56.

Ted was a member of the Philipsburg Elks Lodge 1173, and the American Legion Post 827 in Altoona.

He enjoyed ballroom dancing with his wife, fishing and hunting.

There will be no public services at Sorge Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., Hollidaysburg.

The family would like to offer sincere thanks to the staff of the Van Zandt VA Medical Center.

More than a year after her son Gabriel Cabral died after being burned while working at Stelco’s Nanticoke plant, Pam Fraser says it’s still hard to believe it actually happened.

“How could it be?” said Fraser on Wednesday. “No mother, father, sister or brother or aunt should ever get that phone call when someone just goes to work.”

Cabral, 32, and his coworker Sean MacPherson died after being burned by steam at Stelco Lake Erie Works plant on April 25, 2023.

Cabral died weeks later, on May 16, while MacPherson held on for several months but died in November, according to members of his family. They were repairing steel cladding on a quench tower, a structure used for cooling hot coke used in the steelmaking process.

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development is investigating what happened, and quickly issued corrective orders to Stelco and John Kenyon Ltd., the sheet metal contractor that was Cabral’s direct employer after the deaths last year.

This month, on June 14, it laid charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act against both companies related to the incident, spokesperson Manuel Alas-Sevillano told CBC Hamilton on Wednesday.

Stelco was charged with:

Two counts of failing to take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of a worker. “The defendant failed to ensure that the quench/mogul car was under the direct control of an operator who could ensure that the quench tower was free of workers before proceeding to quench the hot coke.” Related to the second count, “the defendant failed to ensure that adequate lunch and/or break periods were scheduled for the quenching process, to ensure that the quenching process did not take place while workers were performing work on the quench tower.”

Delaware Standardbred Breeders’ Fund second-leg action wrapped up Wednesday (June 19) at Harrington Raceway as six $27,397 divisions of trotters were contested on the 16-race program.

LGs Bluestone won the early non-wagering division in 1:58 for Nanticoke Racing, D.T. Doane and Andris Kilpa. The Anders Bluestone gelding, trained by Les Givens, notched his second straight win in elimination action over Royal Beep Beep and Portnoy. It was the fastest division on the evening.

David Hamm and Glenn Phillips’ Marinos Prize ($3.60, Ross Wolfenden) notched a 1:59.4 win in the first filly division over Little Silver and Starfish. The E L Platinum filly recorded a new lifetime best in her third career win for trainer Nick DeVita.

The second male division went to Jane Dunavant’s Pretty Two ($4.20, Carlo Poliseno) in 2:00.3 over Jetsam and Leaveminthedust. The Dusty Winner gelding overtook Jetsam late and cruised to his second career win for his trainer-driver.

Nanticoke Racing’s LGs Jaxon won the final male division in 2:00.1 for trainer Givens. The Rolls Blue Chip gelding notched his 10th lifetime win over Trout Master and Chief Funster.

The second filly division saw Gary Rhodes’ Lovies Place ($4, Art Stafford Jr.) complete a sweep of her eliminations with a 1:59.1 win over Going Platinum and Platinum Proposal. The E L Platinum filly earned her fourth career win for her trainer-driver.

The final division on the card went to James Craparotta and Pat Berry Racing’s Daburg ($2.40, Berry) in 1:59.2 over Rip Away and Luvyas Nugget. The Anders Bluestone filly won her fifth race in her 10th lifetime start with a front-stepping score for trainer Jason Skinner.

Nanticoke Indian Chief Avery Johnson said he is looking forward to the tribe’s 46th annual Powwow in September — two days of traditional foods, native dancing, vendors and camaraderie.

“It’s always fun, right? It’s all about bringing the public up to speed about Nanticoke Indians. We are having a special guest this year, Angela Miracle Gladue from Canada. She’s one of the top female hoop dancers and performers in the country,” he said, describing her style as “indigenous hip-hop.”

Gladue, who has performed at the Kennedy Center and at the Pentagon, is a Cree who, Johnson said, “has a way of putting it all together and creating her own kind of dancing.”

The Cree are a North American indigenous people who live primarily in Canada.

The powwow — designed to “celebrate, educate, share, entertain and excite the public about the continent’s first peoples” — will be on Saturday, Sept. 7, and Sunday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Grand Entry will be at noon each day, and the powwow will feature traditional and fancy dances, as well as dance specials with prize money. On Sunday, there will be a morning spiritual service at 8:30 a.m.

“I hope every year brings something a little different and a little more interesting to the public,” Johson said, adding that local dignitaries have been invited to the powwow, including U.S. Sen. Tom Carper — a regular at the event who often takes part in the dances and who will retire next year.
