Pine Grove 9, Williams Valley 2

PINE GROVE — Jamie Dinger drove in a team-best three runs and Pine Grove made themselves known at the plate when they crushed Williams Valley in the Cardinal Classic.

Chelcy Clark earned the win for the Cardinals, working seven innings while allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four Vikings.

Hannah Aungst and Madison Shiffer each had two hits and T Bohr and Shiffer each brought home two runs for Pine Grove’s offense.

Luzerne County Council can schedule presentations from the top three engineering firms interested in work on the closed West Nanticoke/Nanticoke Bridge after PennDOT approves a county administrative decision to eliminate two firms from consideration, County Manager Romilda Crocamo said Wednesday in a report updating the process.

A Luzerne County administration committee reviewed statements of interest submitted by five engineering firms on Monday morning, Crocamo said.

“Information from the committee reviews will be provided to PennDOT Central Office for their approval. Upon PennDOT approval, the firm names will be made public,” Crocamo said Wednesday in an email to county council members.

Two weeks ago, Crocamo decided to close the bridge over the Susquehanna River shortly after engineers conducting a scheduled routine bridge inspection determined advanced deterioration and section loss of primary, load-carrying components were critical deficiencies.

The county-owned bridge, built in 1914, links Nanticoke City to the West Nanticoke section of Plymouth Twp. The next-closest bridge over the river is the Route 29 bridge connecting Hanover Twp. and Plymouth Twp.

The vehicular weight limit on the bridge was reduced to 5 tons last May. That decision allowed cars and most passenger vehicles to cross the bridge, but emergency vehicles such as fire trucks could not.

Last August, the county put the bridge project into the PennDOT’s Engineering and Construction Management System, known as ECMS, to receive $10 million in federal project funding through the state Transportation Improvement Program. The county also has access to $55 million from an infrastructure loan funded by state gaming revenue.

Two weeks ago, the five engineering firms submitted statements of interest to get the job determining how to repair, reconstruct or replace the bridge. All five engineering firms interested are “excellent,” Director of Project Management Nick Vough said at the last council meeting on March 25.

The Pittston Area offense surged in the fifth inning, exploding for 10 runs in the frame to turn a close game into a commanding 13-2 five-inning win over Wyoming Valley West on Wednesday.

Gabby Gorzkowski had a home run, a triple and four RBI for Pittston Area, while Sam Herbert added two triples and four RBI.

Isabella Seip and Brooke Long each had a hit and an RBI for Wyoming Valley West.

Tunkhannock 16, Crestwood 8

Erin Van Ness had a six-RBI afternoon on a double and two base hits to power Tunkhannock to the win.

MaKenzie Bevan and Taryn Newswanger each homered for the Tigers, while Lucy Karp had a double and scored four runs.

Jorja Snyder had a triple and drove in a run for Crestwood.

Lake-Lehman 15, Nanticoke Area 0

Hannah Chipego pitched three perfect innings, and the Black Knights offense did the rest in a three-inning win over Nanticoke Area.

Chipego also had a home run and a double at the plate to lead Lake-Lehman. Kaitlyn Brudnicki added a homer and four RBI.

BASEBALL

Wyoming Area 16, Tunkhannock 1

The Warriors rapped out 11 hits over three innings to rout Tunkhannock in three innings.

Alex Vacula had two hits and two RBI for Wyoming Area, while Robbie Yatsko led the team with three RBI.

BOYS LACROSSE

Scranton Prep 13, Crestwood 8

In a rematch of last year’s District 2 Class 2A championship, Scranton Prep once again emerged victorious over Crestwood.

Braedon McPartland had five goals and two assists for Preo. Brady Holmes added three goals.

Kevin Shulde scored three goals to lead Crestwood. Ethan Zabroski made five saves.

WILKES-BARRE — A defense attorney for a Nanticoke man who admitted to stabbing a man in Wilkes-Barre last summer requested a sentence that would allow his client to remain at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility.

However, Luzerne County Assistant District Attorney James L. McMonagle noted Anthony “Niko” Perez, 30, stabbed the man in the back and evaded arrest by running from city police officers, ultimately leaving the sentence at the discretion of Judge David W. Lupas.

Lupas noted the severity of the offense when he sentenced Perez to 16 months to three years in state prison on a charge of aggravated assault and six months probation for evading arrest.

Perez apologized for his actions prior to being sentence on Monday. His attorney, Public Defender John Donovan, requested Perez remain at the county correctional facility as he has done well with no infractions.

Wilkes-Barre police arrested Perez when he was found hiding in brush near New Hancock Street after he was accused of stabbing Joseph Michael Caskey in the back on Bowman Street on June 25, 2024, according to court records.

Court records say several juvenile females were at a residence on Bowman Street to confront another juvenile female. The scene escalated into a physical confrontation that involved adults.

Caskey told police he heard someone disrespected his grandmother during the melee and was stabbed in the back by Perez who wore brass knuckles that had an attached knife, court records say.

Perez pled guilty to the charges Jan. 13. He was granted 279 days of pre-sentencing credit for time served at the county correctional facility.

Sierra Ripka is a trailblazer in District 2 girls’ wrestling.

The Nanticoke Area junior puts her heart and soul into the sport, starting off on the boys’ team as a freshman and continuing to build a resume that others will be chasing for years to come.

She wrestles year around, pushing herself against the best in the country.

She’s now a two-time state place-winner, ending with a fifth-place finish this year in her junior campaign.

Perhaps, though, her biggest attribute is the way she promotes the newly-formed sport. The Nanticoke Area wrestling room is bustling with new energy from underclassmen girls who want to learn, thrive and succeed in the sport.

And there’s no one better to lead their charge than Ripka.

“It’s amazing that I get to share what I know,” she said. “We had a bunch of new girls come out this year. Being able to sit back, talk with them and watch some of their matches with them, it’s fun. I really enjoy helping them to get better in the sport. A lot of the girls are nervous, but I just try to tell them to stay calm and have fun.”

For her efforts this season, Ripka is The Citizens’ Voice Girls’ Wrestler of the Year. She joins former Lake-Lehman wrestler Alahna Morris as only the second female chosen for the award.

Ripka finished the season with a record of 35-4 with 24 pins and three majors. This was her second state-placer, ending in fourth as a sophomore. She was a Wyoming Valley Conference champ, District 2 170-pound titlist and was third at the Central Regional in Milton.

Out of her four losses, three of them were to wrestlers that placed top four or higher at states.

Dallas won the last time they faced Greater Nanticoke Area and things went their way on Monday too. Dallas blew past Greater Nanticoke Area 19-3. The Mountaineers not only won on Monday, but they posted their biggest win since March 25, 2024.

Dallas got a massive performance out of EMMA FOSTOCK, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2. The team also got some help courtesy of JADE SMITH, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.

FOSTOCK wasn’t the only one working in the hit department: Dallas kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That’s the most hits they’ve posted since back in April of 2024.

Dallas has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they’ve averaged 12.0 runs this season. As for Greater Nanticoke Area, they are on an eight-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-2.

Coming up, Dallas will square off against North Pocono at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. As for Greater Nanticoke Area, they will face off against Northwest Area at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
