Greater Nanticoke Area was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss. They fell 5-1 to the Wyoming Area Warriors. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Greater Nanticoke Area of the 8-0 defeat they experienced in the pair’s previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2023.

For Wyoming Area’s part, Alexa Gasek was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off seven hits. Gasek has been consistent recently: she hasn’t pitched less than six innings in three consecutive pitching appearances. Gasek was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with a triple, a run, and an RBI.

In other batting news, Arianna Gaylord was excellent, scoring a run while going 2-for-4. Aubrey Lewis was another key contributor, scoring two runs and stealing two bases.

Greater Nanticoke Area’s loss dropped their record down to 0-2. As for Wyoming Area, the win got them back to even at 2-2.

Greater Nanticoke Area will be playing in front of their home fans against Berwick at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Wyoming Area, they are on the road again on Tuesday to play Wyoming Seminary College Prep at 4:30 p.m.

Wyoming Area won the last time they faced Greater Nanticoke Area, and things went their way on Monday too. The Wyoming Area Warriors walked away with a 5-1 win over the Greater Nanticoke Area Trojans.

Alexa Gasek was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off seven hits. Gasek has been consistent recently: she hasn’t pitched less than six innings in three consecutive pitching appearances. Gasek was also solid in the batter’s box, going 1-for-4 with a triple, a run, and an RBI.

In other batting news, Arianna Gaylord was excellent, scoring a run while going 2-for-4. Maggie Hallman was another key contributor, going 1-for-4 with a triple and a run.

The victory got Wyoming Area back to even at 2-2. As for Greater Nanticoke Area, they are on a five-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-2.

Wyoming Area will head out on the road to square off against Wyoming Seminary College Prep at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Greater Nanticoke Area, they will stay at home for another game and welcome Berwick at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

Wyoming Area got its offense going late in the game, scoring five times in the final two innings to defeat Nanticoke Area 5-1 Monday in Wyoming Valley Conference softball.

Arianna Gaylord was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for Wyoming Area. Allison Layland was 2-for-3 with a triple. Alexa Gasek tripled and had an RBI. Maggie Hallman also had a triple.

Gasek pitched a complete game, striking out nine.

Lilli Nice had two doubles and an RBI for Nanticoke Area. Azariah Muhammed had a double and a single.

Holy Redeemer 16, Hanover Area 1

Abby Williams homered, doubled and had four RBI as Holy Redeemer won in three innings.

Grace Stetz-Madden was 2-for-3 with four RBI. Bella Boylan had a triple and two RBI. Katie Genovese singled and had two RBI. Lauren Hayden and Mary Lombardi doubled.

Kayla Gist had a double and Krysta Shreve had a single for Hanover Area’s only hits.

BASEBALL

Hazleton Area 8, Bethlehem Liberty 2

Chris Florentino homered and drove in three runs as Hazleton Area defeated Bethlehem Liberty in a game played Sunday.

Florentino finished 3-for-3. Dominic Marino and Antonio Doganiero each doubled and knocked in a run. Jonas Aponick had a pair of singles and an RBI. The Cougars tore open a close game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Jordan Castrine pitched 3.1 innings of relief for the win. Freshman Jack Esposito got the save.

Nanticoke Area 4, Wyoming Area 1

Brandon Wozniak threw a complete-game one-hitter as Nanticoke Area defeated Wyoming Area on Sunday.

Wonziak finished with six strikeouts. Derek Miller was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Trojans. Derek Shemanski had an RBI and Tyler Skordensky doubled.

The rapid collapse of a Baltimore bridge that was struck by large cargo ship highlighted the importance that bridges play in the daily lives of many Americans.

Six construction workers who were on the bridge are presumed dead. The drivers of more than 30,000 vehicles that crossed the bridge daily must find a new route around or over the Patapsco River. And shipments at the Port of Baltimore will be shut down for some time, forcing numerous businesses to find alternative means of getting their goods in and out of the U.S.

Though the Interstate 895 bridge in Baltimore had been in satisfactory condition before the shipping collision, thousands of other bridges stand in poor shape across the U.S. due to aging piers, beams and key structural components.

Here are some takeaways from an Associated Press analysis of the more than 621,000 roadway bridges that are more than 20 feet long and are listed in the federal government’s National Bridge Inventory.

Thousands of poor bridges

Inspectors rate bridges using a 0-9 scale, with 7 or above considered “good.” A “poor” rating reflects a 4 or below on any portion of a bridge’s main components. A mid-range rating is considered “fair.”

About 42,400 U.S. bridges are in poor condition, carrying about 167 million vehicles each day, according to the federal government. Those poor bridges are on average 70 years old.

Of those poor bridges, four-fifths have problems with their substructures (the legs holding them up) or their superstructures (the arms supporting their load). And more than 15,800 of the poor bridges also were listed in poor shape a decade ago, according to AP’s analysis.

The “right to repair” movement is gaining traction around the country. Four states have passed laws that require manufacturers to make it easier for consumers to repair their devices – a cracked screen, broken phone camera, or busted laptop. There’s legislation in New Jersey, Delaware and a bill in the Pennsylvania Senate, and another in the House. Advocates of these laws say they save consumers money, save the planet from tons of e-waste, and support small local businesses. Joining us to talk about efforts to make tech more fixable are Surera Ward, founder and owner of Girls Fix It, a local tech repair shop, Nathan Proctor, who leads the Public Interest Research Group’s Right to Repair Campaign, and Rep. Kyle Mullins (D-Lackawanna) who tries to introduce a bill to the Pennsylvania State House.

Philadelphia author and podcaster Jo Piazza has a brand new novel out today, The Sicilian Inheritance. HANOVER TWP. — When it comes to abandoned coal mine lands, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey on Monday said Pennsylvania has more than most states.

“So I don’t have to tell you what projects like this mean to this area,” said Casey, D-Scranton. “As you look around, you can see quite a view here.”

Casey was in Hanover Township on Monday to announce federal funding to reclaim and restore land impacted by coal mining in Luzerne County.

“With funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, $1,354,600 will be used for the Nanticoke Creek restoration project,” Casey said. “This new funding follows the $244 million Pennsylvania has already received from the infrastructure law.”

Casey said Pennsylvania has already received $270 million for abandoned mine land cleanup — including $244 million from the Casey-backed infrastructure law.

According to Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Acting Secretary Jessica Shirley, who attended the news conference, Pennsylvania leads the nation with $5.1 billion of abandoned mine damaged land.

“To put that into perspective, West Virginia is number two, and they have $2.3 billion in liabilities,” Shirley said.

Casey said President Joe Biden’s federal infrastructure bill provided $3.7 billion for Pennsylvania over the next 15 years to reclaim abandoned mine land.

Terence J. Ostrowski, president/CEO at Earth Conservancy, attended the news conference. He and Elizabeth W. Hughes, director of communications, explained the scope of the Nanticoke Creek restoration project.

Located in the City of Nanticoke, Hanover and Newport townships, and Warrior Run Borough, the Nanticoke Creek watershed is a sub-watershed of the Susquehanna River Basin. Over the past several years, Earth Conservancy has worked with a team of consultants and agencies to develop a comprehensive plan to restore the historic alignment of the upper portions of the Nanticoke Creek.
