Greater Nanticoke Area School Board appoints new member, limits tax hike

NANTICOKE — Technically, Greater Nanticoke Area School Board should have been swearing in four people who won in the November election during Thursday’s re-organization meeting: Incumbents Tony Prushinski and Mark Cardone, and newcomers Erika Jacobs and David Vnuk. Yet a fifth person joined them with right hand raised: Chet Beggs. Moments earlier the board had voted to appoint Beggs to fill the seat of Mark O’Connor, who resigned last month.

There was arguably some irony in the scene. Both in the primary and general elections the ballots prepared by the Luzerne County election bureau told voters to pick up to five candidates, yet only four seats were open. The county contends the error was caused by the district, which tells the county how many seats are open in each election. The mix up had no impact as only four people filed paperwork and got on the ballot, and no write-in candidates in the Primary nabbed enough votes to have any claim to being on the November ballot.

After the swearing in the board voted to give Tony Prushinski another year as president, and made Wendy Graves vice-president. Vito DeLuca was kept as solicitor for 2024 with a retainer of $29,000. After that meeting was adjourned, the board immediately started its regular monthly meeting.

The relatively light agenda included accepting the resignation of head football coach Ron Bruza Jr., who was thanked and praised by several board members, and voting to keep any 2023-24 tax increase at or below a state set limit.

The tax limit is known as the Act 1 Index and can vary year to year and among districts. This year’s index is higher than usual, with Greater Nanticoke’s set at 8.1% — compared to 6.2% last year and 5.1%…

Invasive Catfish Pose Threat to Eastern Shore Waterways, Research Reveals

SALISBURY, MD – In a two-year investigation conducted by Salisbury University researcher and professor, Dr. Noah Bressman, the invasive blue catfish has emerged as a major concern for fishermen and environmental groups in the Eastern Shore region. Termed “dumpsters of the sea” by researchers and watermen, these non-native predators exhibit a huge and rather ‘just about anything’ appetite, consuming a wide array of species and posing a threat to the delicate balance of local ecosystems.

Bressman, who led the first-of-its-kind study on the Eastern Shore, focused on the Nanticoke River, its tributaries, and the Marshyhope Creek. Over a thousand catfish were captured and dissected during the investigation, revealing a startling trend in their dietary habits.

“Literally the first catfish we studied—47 pounds—we pulled it out, cut open its stomach, and found a whole adult duck in its stomach, and from there it got weirder and weirder,” recounted Dr. Bressman.

Contrary to the idea that these catfish will consume anything in their path, Bressman noted, “Everything’s got their own preference. Just because they eat just about anything and everything that swims by them doesn’t mean they don’t have a preference. We can figure out what species are most of concern here.” The study found that compared to other tributaries, the catfish in the Nanticoke river region are consuming a significantly higher amount of blue crabs, white perch, and threatening the already endangered river herring.

Dr. Bressman added, “What we are seeing them eating is lots of white perch, lots of river herring which are threatened, and also tons of blue crabs which is obviously problematic for Maryland.”

At the Wittman Wharf Catfish Processing Plant, owned by Nick Hargrove, the findings align with their observations. “A lot of times when we open up the bellies on these fish, we see a wide range of species. The catfish…

Newport Township dedicates statue honoring area coal miners

NEWPORT TWP. — The Newport Township community gathered last weekend to commemorate the determined spirit and tireless dedication of the region’s anthracite coal miners with a new statue in their honor.

The event, hosted by Newport United and Newport Township, was attended by elected officials, community leaders, and dozens of residents.

And the speakers shared a dual message with the crowd.

On one hand, they underscored the sacrifices of the miners and of the arduous conditions they faced, not only to provide for their families, but also to power the nation.

On the other hand, they spoke of the miners’ resiliency and hope for a better future — a point that was emphasized to be an inspiration for the community going forward.

It was a message that resonated deeply.

Sen. Lisa Baker, R-Lehman Township, asked attendees who were descendants of coal mining families to identify themselves — most in the audience raised a hand.

“A total of 250 years of responsible local governance is a remarkable milestone, worthy of recognition and celebration,” Baker said. “This record reflects a lengthy honor roll of families, workers, business owners, and leaders who established and sustained Newport Township. It is fitting to pay tribute to the generations of coal miners who were the economic backbone of the community and region. We can look forward to additional community achievements in the years to come.”

Opening remarks at the dedication were offered by Newport Township Manager Joe Hillan, followed by the singing of the national anthem by Karen and Kyra Phair, and a blessing of the statue by Rev. Louis Kaminski. John Zyla, Newport Township Councilman and Chairman of Newport United; and Newport Township Councilman Paul Czapracki then took the podium.

They were followed in turn by Mike Shay on behalf of U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser’s…

New spa arrives in Dickson City offering health and wellness

Residents of Dickson City and the surrounding area have a new place to find health and wellness resources. Head and Stone Spa.

Head and Stone Spa, 914 Commerce Boulevard, Dickson City, opened on Oct. 22. The business is a franchise launched in 2004 with a goal to bring affordable luxury spa services to everyone. The franchise has over 560 locations across the United States and Canada.

The Dickson City Head and Stone Spa opened as a partnership of John Beggs, Scott Brennan and Rick Bunchalk. Beggs got involved in the business after talking to his business partner Brennan, who was working on the corporate level for the franchise. The two then partnered with Bunchalk and first opened a franchise three years ago in Wilkes-Barre at 411 Arena Hub Plaza.

At the time of the Wilkes-Barre opening, Pennsylvania did not have a membership model spa, according to Beggs. This type of spa model helps reduce prices for clients compared to many typical spas, according to Beggs. Affordability helps “get people in a health and wellness routine,” said Beggs. In addition, the model also lets clients become like family with the staff, according to Beggs.

Other than running the spa, Beggs, a Nanticoke resident, works as a math teacher Nanticoke Area School District where he has taught for 25 years. He also served as an assistant basketball coach for 20 years and head coach for six years.

With the success of the Wilkes-Barre location, Beggs and his business partners looked to find another location and found a looking at bringing health and wellness to the area. They looked at the Dickson City as a location with the space having great anchor tenants and a need for a spa in the area, according to Beggs. His goal is for the spa to “be a part of the community…
