H.S. Football: Fox, Nanticoke Area run past Tunkhannock

NANTICOKE — Nanticoke Area’s Zack Fox ran for his 1,000th yard Friday night and kept running.

Fox ran for 260 yards and five touchdowns on 14 carries in the first half as the Trojans routed Tunkhannock 41-6 on homecoming in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 game.

Fox gained 12 yards on his 11th rush to eclipse 1,000 yards for a third consecutive year. He broke into the starting lineup the fifth game of his sophomore season after an injury to the starter. He finished with 17 carries for 275 yards.

“Sophomore year I never pictured it,” Fox said. “We had some injuries and I had to step up and I started rolling.”

Fox started rolling early Friday night. He carried the ball on all four plays after Jaidyn Johnson blocked a punt, scoring on a 3-yard run. He followed with scoring runs of 11 and 56 yards as the Trojans (3-1 Div. 2, 4-3 overall) built a 20-0 lead one play into the second quarter.

Tunkhannock (3-2 Div. 2, 4-3) appeared to get back into the game when quarterback Joey Ross ran around the right side for a 42-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 20-6 at 10:07 of the second quarter.

Two factors, though, extinguished the comeback attempt quickly. First, Fox scored a minute later on a 72-yard run as receiver Gavin Turak picked off the final defender with an excellent downfield block. Secondly, the Tigers slowly self-destructed.

After Fox’s 72-yard TD, the Tigers found themselves in a third-and-49 through a combination of three penalties on two plays. Two were for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“We talked about that, those little things and beating ourselves and how things kind of self-destruct and how it affects us,” Tunkhannock coach Pat Keating said. “This…

Delaware Angler Catches State Record Blue Catfish from Nanticoke River

Delaware has a new blue catfish record, according to a press release the state’s Division of Fish and Wildlife published on Tuesday. Angler Chris Andrews holds the record after catching the large fish from the Nanticoke River, which runs into the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay.

Andrews and his night-fishing buddies were enjoying a peaceful summer trip on the Nanticoke when the big cat took his bait.

“I knew it was a big one, just not how big,” the Bridgeville angler told DelawareOnline.com. “I got the fish up and close to the boat multiple times, but it would just take off pulling my drag. I had a smaller net than usual, so it took multiple tries [to boat]. After about a five-minute fight, the fish was landed.”

The crew then took Andrews’ blue cat to nearby Taylored Tackle Shop in Seaford, Delaware. State wildlife officer Sgt. Nathan Evans certified the 48-pound, 7.2-ounce catch.

Andrews’ catfish beats the previous record-holder by just 4 ounces. That blue cat was caught Oct. 8, 2022 by angler James Lord. Lord’s blue cat measured 40.5 inches long, with a 30-inch girth. Lord also caught his fish from the Nanticoke River, using a hand-size live bluegill as bait.

Record Blue Catfish

Blue catfish are the largest of North America’s native catfish, though they’re not considered abundant in Delaware. Blue cats grow huge, commonly weighing 70 to nearly 100 pounds in the Ohio, Mississippi, and Missouri river drainages.

The IGFA all-tackle world record blue cat weighed 143 pounds, caught from Kerr Lake in Virginia in June 2011 by angler Richard Anderson. He was using a chunk of chicken for bait at the time.

Andrews is no rookie at fishing, he says.

“Fishing is a big part of my life,” he said in the press statement. “I go…

State police charge boy, 16, with attempted homicide in Nanticoke drive-by shooting

WILKES-BARRE — State police at Wilkes-Barre charged a 16-year-old Wilkes-Barre boy as an adult with the attempted homicide of a 14-year-old boy in a drive-by shooting in Nanticoke in July.

James Alberto, address unknown, was taken before Luzerne County Judge Joseph F. Sklarosky Jr. where he was arraigned Thursday.

Investigators allege Alberto was the gunman when he leaned out a passenger window of a 2014 Hyundai Elantra and fired multiple shots, striking the 14-year-old in the head and ankle in the area of West Green and Maple streets on July 21.

The Hyundai, allegedly driven by John Carl Pearce IV, 16, of Wyoming, was reported stolen to Nanticoke City Police on July 19.

Pearce was initially identified as the shooter in a criminal complaint when he was arrested by state police July 26.

State police withdrew the criminal complaint against Pearce on Wednesday, refiling an amended complaint that identifies Pearce as the driver and Alberto as the alleged gunman.

Investigators believe the 14-year-old boy was targeted in retaliation as Alberto believed he made disrespectful comments about a deceased infant, according to the criminal complaint filed against Alberto on Thursday.

According to the criminal complaint:

A woman from Nanticoke reported her Hyundai Elantra stolen from her residence on July 19. Two day later, July 21, Nanticoke City police responded to gunfire at West Green and Maple streets where they found the 14-year-old boy with gunshot wounds to his head and ankle.

Surveillance footage in the area showed the 14-year-old boy walking as the Hyundai was recorded driving slowly with the rear passenger wearing a ski mask lean out the window and discharged rounds across the roof of the vehicle, the complaint says.

After the shooting, the occupants of the Hyundai were recorded…

TidalHealth Nanticoke recertified in total hip and knee replacement

SEAFORD — TidalHealth Nanticoke has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Total Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards.

The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a healthcare organization’s commitment to offering safe and quality patient care.

The Seaford hospital was recognized for providing clinical total hip and knee replacement programs across the continuum of care.

The recertification evaluates how organizations, like TidalHealth, use clinical outcomes and performance measures to identify opportunities to improve care, as well as to educate and prepare patients and caregivers for discharge.

The recertification is valid for a two-year period and follows a rigorous and unannounced onsite review earlier this year.

“TidalHealth Nanticoke’s outstanding orthopedic division is pleased to have received this reaccreditation from The Joint Commission, the premier healthcare quality improvement and accrediting body in the nation,” said Penny Short, MSM, BSN, RN, President of TidalHealth Nanticoke.

“It validates our quality of care, while also challenging us to continuously improve and heighten our standards of care for orthopedic patients in our region, which ultimately improves the health of the communities we serve.”

TidalHealth Nanticoke’s total hip and knee replacement programs have continuously strived to exceed benchmarks with quality outcomes. The utilization of clinical practice guidelines in conjunction with multidisciplinary team collaboration were key components in preparation for the survey. The program utilizes strategies to assure best practices are implemented for pre-procedure education, early ambulation post procedure, appropriate pain management, post procedure education and improved functional outcomes.

“Total Hip and Knee Replacement certification recognizes healthcare organizations committed to striving for excellence and fostering continuous improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” said Ken Grubbs, DNP, MBA, RN, Executive Vice President of Accreditation and Certification Operations and Chief Nursing Officer, The Joint Commission.

What a catch! Bridgeville man lands Delaware record blue catfish

Delaware State News

SEAFORD — Bridgeville’s Chris Andrews hooked a state record blue catfish that weighed in at 48 pounds, 7.2 ounces and was 42.5-inches long in the 2023 Delaware Sport Fishing Tournament.

The catch marked the fourth state record fish of the year for the year-long tournament sponsored by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Division of Fish and Wildlife.

Mr. Andrews caught the record blue catfish while fishing in the Nanticoke River on his personal boat at night with friends who helped him land his massive catch.

Mr. Andrews said it was just another quiet end of summer evening on the water until he felt a strong tug on his fishing line.

“Fishing is a big part of my life — I go out about three times a week, so I guess you’d say I’m an avid fisherman,” Mr. Andrews said, in a press release. “I knew it was a big one, just not how big.

“I got the fish up and close to the boat multiple times, but it would just take off pulling my drag. I had a smaller net than usual, so it took multiple tries (to get it into the boat). After about a five-minute fight, the fish was landed.”

The record catch was weighed at Taylored Tackle Shop in Seaford and certified by Sgt. Nathan Evans, of the Delaware Natural Resources Fish and Wildlife Police.

Mr. Andrews’ blue catfish eclipsed the previous state record set in 2022 by James Lord, by only 4 ounces  — but as Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Fisheries biologist Devon Scott, who recorded Andrews’ catch in the Delaware Sport Fishing Tournament, noted, “They’re both behemoth fish.”

A list of all Delaware Sport Fishing Tournament state records is available at the Division of Fish and…
