H.S. Football: Turnovers prove costly for Nanticoke Area in loss to Shamokin

NANTICOKE — Turnovers are practically a given when playing in torrential downpour. But when those turnovers continually bit Nanticoke Area at the worst times, it was easy for the Trojans to throw their hands up in the air to the football gods.

Giveaways plagued the Trojans in a 28-14 loss to Shamokin on Friday. Dogged in a fight for a coveted spot in the District 2 Class 4A playoff picture, Nanticoke’s setback was frustrating for anyone judging the game on time of possession or total yards.

“It’s just disappointing we didn’t take care of the football,” Nanticoke Area coach Ron Bruza said. “We didn’t play Trojan football, and it cost us the game. There’s not much more that you can say than that.”

After suffocating the Shamokin offense over three possessions, Nanticoke Area gifted the Indians their first chance at the end zone. A fumble at the 10-yard line allowed Shamokin to move within one point. Chase Pensyl caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Brad Latshaw to cut the deficit to 8-7.

Nanticoke Area seemed unfazed by the early hiccup, marching down the field with ease against a puzzled Shamokin defense. Ryan Wiaterowski bowled over Purple and White defenders for a 6-yard touchdown for a 14-7 lead at the 6:11 mark of the second quarter.

Their lead would last a grand total of 14 seconds. The Shamokin offense line created a spacious hole for Jayce Ginck to run 72 yards for a game-tying touchdown.

Shamokin carried that momentum by outscoring the Trojans 14-0 in the second half. The Indians forced a pair of turnovers in the midfield.

“You can’t give the ball up three times per game,” Bruza said. “You can’t give the ball up at the 10-yard line. You can’t let…

Shamokin pulls away in win at Nanticoke

Tagged under: District 2, District 4, News, pfn

John Kotsko | October 21, 2023

With the game tied at 14, Shamokin needed big plays. The Indians got a fumble recovery on the opening drive in the second half. Followed by a big third down catch by Chase Pensyl that ended in a three yard touchdown run by freshman Logan Steele to give Shamokin their first lead of the game and kept the lead. Jayce Ginck scored two rushing touchdowns as Shamokin took a 28-14 victory on the road at Nanticoke. “We did a fantastic job defensively in the second half.” said Shamokin head coach Marc Persing. “We didn’t give up too many rushing yards. Our defensive coordinator made a fantastic adjustment and we took care of business in the second half.”

After the Trojan defense forced a three and out to start the game. Nanticoke drove down the field, ending with a 13 yard touchdown run by Zack Fox to make it 8-0 with a two point conversion from Ryan Wiaterowski with 6:14 remaining in the first quarter. The Indians ended up driving down to the 29 yard line but the Trojans defense held up and forced a punt after losses of 1 on first and second down then a false start and an incompletion on third down.

Nanticoke got the ball at their own five yard line. They had a third and 3 at their own 12, they fumbled and the Indians recovered. At the start of the second quarter, Shamokin faced a third and four at the Trojan six yard line and Brad Latshaw found Pensyl for a six yard score and the PAT cut…

New Latina-owned dance studio opens in Nanticoke

Nanticoke, Luzerne Co. — In honor of Hispanic heritage month, FOX56 is highlighting a new Latina owned dance studio in Nanticoke scheduled to open on Wednesday, October 18th.

The studio highlights showing pride through traditional dances.

Marcie Curry, a Mexican American and the owner of Rhythmic Republic Dance Studio, has been dancing for over 20 years.

Her first dance studio was located in Chino, California. However last year, she made the move from Chino to Nanticoke to continue her dream of enriching others with the culture of traditional dance and expression.

“It’s not just about dance, it’s about expression. So for example you express your feelings along with what’s going on with the song. Let’s say a toddler maybe, they’re going to expressing whatever they’re going through, not only the routine”, Curry added.

One of the many styles covered at the Rhythmic Republic dance studio is regional Mexican dance from the state of Jalisco, Mexico.

For this style and many others, performers wear Mexican folklore shoes with nails.

The nails add noise to the dancers steps to make the shoes a part of the musical experience.

The Rhythmic Republic Dance team has been operating on a smaller scale for the past few months.

The team have performed in multiple festivals throughout NEPA including the Wilkes-Barre Multicultural festival last month.

Evolet Vazquez has been dancing and performing since she was three years old.

She says despite the large number of people at their performances she just focuses on dance moves and lets everything else fall into place naturally.

“It’s a lot of work, but my mom tells me that I’m going to do a good job and I just believe in myself. Just stop worrying about other things and you’ll do fine”, Vasquez said.

Jules, one of the dance instructors encourages all people to consider joining…

Nanticoke rolls over Redeemer | Times Leader

WILKES-BARRE TWP. — 235 yards and four touchdowns is a great full-game statline for most running backs in the Wyoming Valley Conference.

For Nanticoke Area’s Zack Fox, that was just one quarter.

Fox scored on his first two touches, Nanticoke’s first two plays from scrimmage, as the Trojans smashed Holy Redeemer 54-0 at McCarthy Stadium.

The senior workhorse halfback got an early breather in the second quarter, but not before slashing and gashing his way through the beleagured Royals defense.

“He’s been my guy for the last three years,” said Nanticoke Area head coach Ron Bruza after the win, the Trojans’ fourth in a row. “Zack’s a great modest kid, and he’s a great running back.”

On Nanticoke’s first play of the game, Fox got the pitch and bounced it outside for a 56-yard score. On Nanticoke’s second play following a quick three-and-out, in what looked like the same play call, Fox ran through a tackler or two and scored from 36 yards out.

He would add two more before the quarter was through, with a 21-yard scoop-and-score from Treston Allen added in to a 35-0 Trojans lead at the end of the first.

Fox got so many early opportunities in large part because the Nanticoke defense proved immovable through the night, with Holy Redeemer finishing the game with negative yardage and Royals quarterback Thomas Dugan forced to run for his life, getting dropped multiple times way behind the line of scrimmage.

On a very rainy, very cold night, Bruza was able to get Fox out of the game early to keep him healthy and rested for the rest of the season.

“Whenever you could get one of your guys a rest, it’s a huge advantage moving down the stretch,” Bruza said.
