James Kasisky, 26, and Valentina Varela-Luis, 25, were arraigned in Nanticoke Monday afternoon.
LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — A mother and father are locked up in Luzerne County after their 19-month-old daughter died after being left alone for more than a day.
According to court papers, the mother and father of this toddler both told police they thought the other was taking care of the child, but no one checked in on her for more than 24 hours.
James Kasisky, 26, and Valentina Varela-Luis, 25, were arraigned in Nanticoke Monday afternoon.
Troopers say that in December, the pair never checked on their 19-month-old daughter in Newport Township for more than 24 hours.
Court papers show she had been left in a warm room and had no food or water.
Varela-Luis blamed her daughter’s father for their child’s death, and Kasisky had no words for reporters as both were arraigned on manslaughter and endangerment charges after their 19-month-old daughter was found dead in her room on December 23, 2022.
“On the eve of Christmas Eve, very bitter cold night, the investigation revealed that this baby was left unattended for a period greater than 24 hours,” said Luzerne County Assistant District Attorney Shana Messinger.
Court papers say police responded to a home in Glen Lyon near Nanticoke after Varela-Luis called 911 when she found her daughter not breathing in her bedroom.
First responders found that the child showed signs that she had been dead for an extended period of time.
“Through our extensive investigation, which involves both forensic and medical teams, we proceeded with charges, and with that, we’re ready to proceed with the prosecution,” Messinger said.
After interviewing Varela-Luis and Kasisky, state police determined both parents claimed they thought the other would check on the child after she was put to bed…

HANOVER TWP. — A former truck driver at an international shipping company was charged with stalking a supervisor.
Frank J. Marcinkowski, 57, of Enterprise Street, made repeated unwanted phone calls to his former supervisor, a woman, and showed up at the facility on New Commerce Boulevard in Hanover Industrial Estates despite being told to stay away, according to court records.
Marcinkowski surrendered on charges of stalking and harassment filed by township police. He was arraigned by District Judge Rick Cronauer in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday and released on $5,000 unsecured bail.
According to the criminal complaint:
A woman reported to police last month about ongoing harassment from Marcinkowski, a former truck driver at DHL. The woman was Marcinkowski’s supervisor.
She claimed Marcinkowski was relieved of his duties in early 2022 after he failed to return to work after a leave of absence. She continued to have contact with Marcinkowski because she was concerned for his health but after several months, she decided to cease having further contact with him.
She told police the relationship was strictly professional.
Earlier this year, Marcinkowski began calling the woman at her place of employment every morning at 7:30 a.m. and again at 8 a.m. She repeatedly told Marcinkowski she no longer wanted him to contact her.
Marcinkowski ignored the woman’s wishes and continued to call and text her, the complaint says.
When the woman ignored his calls, Marcinkowski allegedly called the security desk and identified himself using another name asking to speak with the woman.
Police in the complaint say Marcinkowski called other employees and began showing up at the facility.
During one visit, Marcinkowski wore a DHL uniform and was granted access onto the property driving his vehicle near the door of the woman’s office,…

Feb. 8—WILKES-BARRE — The defensive pressure that was so effective in the first quarter returned in the nick of time for Holy Redeemer.
The result was a chance to play for the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 girls basketball title.
Redeemer forced two turnovers in the final 17 seconds Wednesday night to hang on for a 53-49 victory over Nanticoke Area in the regular-season finales for both teams.
Redeemer (11-1 Div. 2, 14-8 overall) will play Lake-Lehman (11-1, 18-4) at 7 p.m. Friday at Nanticoke Area High School for the division crown.
“Every time you play Nanticoke they’re gritty, they’re tough,” said Redeemer coach John Jezorwski, whose team won the first matchup in overtime. “(Claire) Aufiero was fabulous, played an outstanding game. Ed (Grant) did a great job coaching and preparing his kids.
“They just punched us in the mouth, but again we responded well.”
The Royals held Nanticoke Area (7-5, 9-13) scoreless over the final 1:32. The Trojanettes had tied the game 49-49 after Aufiero scored inside off a pass from Navaeh Baran.
Turnovers, though, hurt Nanticoke Area the rest of the way. Redeemer’s Meghan Albrecht turned a steal into a go-ahead layup. She then tied up a Nanticoke Area player, resulting in the possession arrow giving the ball to Redeemer with 30.3 second left.
Redeemer missed the front end of a one-and-one with 17.7 seconds left, giving the ball back to Nanticoke Area when it went out of bounds. The Trojanettes, though, threw away the inbound pass.
Redeemer’s Paige Kroptavich made it 52-49 with a free throw with 15.4 seconds remaining. She missed her second shot and Nanticoke Area rebounded only to be called for a traveling violation.
“The periods we took care of the ball, we were able to break that press and made our little runs,” Grant said. “A lot of people stepped up tonight, which…
