Sussex County residents take in new mobile health clinic and it’s life changing resources

SEAFORD, Del.- TidalHealth Nanticoke is getting $350,000 in federal funding that will help keep Delawareans healthy by addressing health disparities in under-resourced communities within Western Sussex County including Georgetown, Millsboro, Selbyville, Laurel, Seaford, Delmar, Blades Bethel and Bridgeville.

“We’ve been waiting on this cause for a time I couldn’t get to the doctors appointments, even when you made transportation they couldn’t pick you up because something got in the way; but now someone has heard our voice,” Laverne Whitmire, a resident at Meadow Bridge Apartments in Seaford, said.

TidalHealth will use this funding towards outfitting a mobile health clinic, to provide health screenings, multidisciplinary health services, education and outreach in community-based settings. “It’s going to be staffed with a registered nurse and a community health worker who will be able to do preventive health screenings such as take peoples A1C’s, find out their cholesterol, flu shots, COVID shots, but also health education,” Kat Rodgers, Director of Community Health Initiatives for TidalHealth said.

This announcement is something that made resident Whitmire emotional. “You don’t even know what you have started here, this is going to be such a tremendous out pouring of love,” Whitmire said.

But, she’s not the only one feeling this way. “It’s a big responsibility,” Penny Short, Tidal Health Nanticoke President, said. “We are ready and willing to be there for all of you.”

Rodgers said this idea came about when they started to do community vaccination clinics during the pandemic. “What we saw is that people had a lot of barriers to accessing all healthcare and people didn’t know they had diabetes or hypertension,” Rodgers said. “And, so once the pandemic sort of got under control that caused us to say, well what can we do differently? How can we provide healthcare and access differently?”

Steelworkers deserve better at Stelco as contract talks stall

Jun 23, 2022   ·  Media release   ·

NANTICOKE, Ont. – Negotiations for a new collective agreement at Stelco in Nanticoke, Ont., have stalled, says Randy Graham, President of the United Steelworkers union, Local 8782.

The union filed with the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB), on June 22, 2022, requesting a conciliator. Members of the union will take part in a strike authorization vote on June 27, 2022. The current five-year collective agreement expires on June 30, 2022.

Over 1,000 USW members work at Stelco’s Nanticoke operations in production and skilled trades, producing hot-rolled coil steel.

Key issues at the bargaining table are wages, benefits and pensions.

“Other large Canadian industrial companies like Bombardier and ArcelorMittal Long Products are paying their workers 18-26% increases over five or six years. Our members see that and they know they deserve to keep pace. Instead, the company is offering to shuffle around our pay and bonuses to disguise the fact that there’s only a small overall increase,” said Graham.

Workers at ArcelorMittal Long Products are represented by the United Steelworkers union in Quebec and ratified a new collective agreement in February.

Cost of living data released just yesterday, show annual inflation has rocketed to 7.7%, higher than at any time since 1983.

“Stelco has the wallet to handsomely reward its shareholders and to buy in to the Hamilton Tiger Cats football club. You can see Stelco signage all over the stadium at games. Well, it’s time to recognize the workers that are doing the hard work that contributes to the company’s success,” said Graham.

“These steelworkers have worked hard as essential workers, throughout the pandemic, and delivered the product that brought over $2 billion in sales for Stelco in the last year,” said Myles Sullivan, USW Ontario Director.

“Now…

‘A step up’ – Iconic stairway at LCCC getting a makeover

A well-known part of a college campus in Luzerne County is getting a facelift. Whether it’s cause for celebration or mourning, depends on who you ask.

NANTICOKE, Pa. — What is it about a flight of stairs that has close to 100 community college alumni returning to their old stomping grounds just to have one last go at them?

We’ll let 1990 grad Nancy Burkland explain.

“It’s memories, memories that we’re always going to have. And it’s sad that new kids coming in aren’t going to have those memories,” Burkland said. “We have to walk the steps one last time because they’re infamous!”

If you’ve ever taken a class at Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke, you’ve likely had to climb those infamous steps.

And it’s nearly impossible to do so without forming an opinion on them.

Some go out of their way to avoid scaling the 54-step stairway to campus.

“I always park at building 3, and I take the long way,” says Kelsey Hardy.

Alumna Bonnie Orth remembers, “avoiding them and walking up and down the grass. There’s 1 or 2 times I did it barefoot because I had heels on that were killing my feet.”

Others embrace the challenge.

“I just love the steps. I look forward to them. I purposely park here, even when my classes are over there,” said Nikolene Espinal.

As a mom working on getting her degree, Espinal appreciates the chance to cram in a cardio workout on her way to class.

“This is what I enjoy! I lunge up and down them!”

Because of the awkward size of these steps, everyone has their own unique strategy to best navigate them. You’re either a “two-step person” or a “one-step person.”

“I have to give two steps. I get so tired going…

WATCH: History of Dewey Beach Tower 3

Learn a bit of history of the the tower’s along the Delaware Coast.

Produced by Megan Raymond

“The house the school was kept in,” William Morgan (no relation to the author of this article), “was pine slabs, notched up, and covered with boards and slabs, a hole cut at the top of the roof at one end to let out the smoke.”

His second school was, “built in the woods and was some(what) warmer in winter and plenty of lizards, scorpions and snakes about in the summer time.”

Born in Northwest Fork Hundred in 1780, Morgan was 6-years-old when he first went to school. In spite of his reptilian classmates, Morgan received a rudimentary education that enabled him to pursue a variety of occupations.

As an adult, he worked as a carpenter, studied medicine under a local doctor, and became a Methodist preacher. He lived much of his life near Seaford; and he kept a journal of the important happenings in his life.

Toward the end of his life, he wrote a short autobiography that dramatically illustrated how southern Delaware changed during the first half of the 19th century.

In the years after the American Revolution, western Sussex County…
