Bandits rookie Tehoka Nanticoke finds the net at right time in Game 1 of NLL finals

After scoring one goal in his first three playoff games, rookie Tehoka Nanticoke said he knew he had more to give to the Buffalo Bandits in their pursuit of a National Lacrosse League championship.

In Saturday’s 15-14 victory against the Colorado Mammoth in Game 1 of the finals, Nanticoke tied his career high with five goals and added two assists, earning him second star of the game and the right to wear the Bandits’ heavyweight player of the game belt.

“He just looked more confident today and seemed like he was going to the net more often,” coach John Tavares said. “He was just playing his game … and today he didn’t hold back.”

He had four consecutive Bandits goals – their final two of the second quarter and their first two of the third quarter. Nanticoke helped Buffalo keep the lead despite Colorado’s relentless offense, as the Mammoth cut a 5-1 deficit at the start of the second quarter to 9-8 at halftime. His two goals in the opening 5:30 of the second half gave the Bandits an 11-8 lead.

Nanticoke didn’t score the game-winner. That credit went to Nick Weiss on a breakaway with 51 seconds remaining, but his performance was one of the biggest reasons the Bandits head to Colorado for Game 2 on Saturday with a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

Nick Weiss' goal in final minute lifts Buffalo Bandits in Game 1 of National Lacrosse League finals

The Bandits are trying to win their fifth championship in franchise history and first since 2008.

“This was a game that I’ve dreamed of since I was holding a stick, wearing a JT (Tavares) jersey running around the back yard,” Nanticoke said.

Nanticoke, originally from Six Nations,…

Luzerne County Man Sentenced To Nine Years In Prison For Role In Methamphetamine And Heroin Trafficking Conspiracy

SCRANTON – The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced that William Terron, age 38, formerly of Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, was sentenced on June 1, 2022, by U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani, to nine years’ imprisonment for his role in a methamphetamine and heroin trafficking conspiracy.

According to United States Attorney John C. Gurganus, Terron previously pleaded guilty and admitted to participating in a conspiracy to distribute between 1.5 and 5 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and 1 to 3 kilograms of heroin in Luzerne, Lackawanna and Schuylkill Counties in 2018.  Terron was one of five individuals indicted by a grand jury in December 2018 for methamphetamine trafficking in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

The following defendants were previously sentenced for their roles in this same drug trafficking conspiracy:

  • Amanda Boyle, age 37, of Sweet Valley, PA, was sentenced to nine years in prison;
  • Rudolph Ford, age 33, of Olyphant, PA, was sentenced to seven years in prison;
  • Francheska Quinones, age 28, of Nanticoke, PA, was sentenced to 63 months in prison; and
  • Adam Holcomb, age 37, of Shickshinny, PA, was sentenced to 10 months in prison.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), the Pennsylvania State Police, the Kingston Police Department, the Luzerne County Drug Task Force, and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General.  Assistant United States Attorney Robert J. O’Hara prosecuted the case.

This case is being prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, the centerpiece of the Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction efforts. PSN is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to…

WILKES-BARRE — Several times during the sentencing hearing for Nicole Hagenbach, the proceeding was stopped to refocus on her being punished for delivering prescription pills instead of the overdose death of a state corrections officer.

Hagenbach, 34, of East Noble Street, Nanticoke, admitted to possessing contraband and controlled substances at the State Correctional Institution at Dallas, Jackson Township, and delivering a controlled substance (adderall) to corrections officer Robert Bath Jr. near the main gate on July 24, 2020.

Bath, 36, collapsed while working at the prison about one hour after meeting Hagenbach, according to court records.

Three days later, Bath was found dead inside his residence with evidence of drug use near his body.

State police at Wilkes-Barre in court records say surveillance cameras recorded Hagenbach meeting Bath at SCI-Dallas.

During the investigation, state police uncovered bank documents that showed Bath had transferred nearly $20,790 to Hagenbach and text messages between the two referencing deliveries of prescription pills.

At Hagenbach’s sentencing hearing before Luzerne County Judge David W. Lupas, her attorney, Peter John Moses, said Hagenbach pled guilty to delivery of adderall and possessing contraband on state prison property, not for Bath’s death.

After Bath’s mother, Deborah Cembrock, addressed Lupas expressing the grief of losing her son, the judge acknowledged her sorrow but reminded the parties Hagenbach was not charged with drug delivery resulting in death.

Mark Cembrock said his brother was a third generation state corrections officer…

‘Ocean City is my hometown’: World-traveling artist returns to repair Nanticoke sculpture

“My canvas is the entirety of the North American continent.”

Peter Wolf Toth, the world-traveling, self-taught sculptor, has returned to Ocean City to repair his 20-foot tall “Whispering Giant” sculpture.

Toth, who was initially invited to erect the sculpture in 1976 by former Ocean City mayor Harry W. Kelley, was pleased to have an excuse to return to the resort town.

Having grown up in Vienna, Austria, Toth, who speaks English, Hungarian and German, moved to the United States at the age of 11. Once here, he began to develop a deep interest in Native American art, culture and history.

Although he is a self-taught sculptor, he was often inspired by his father, who was also an artist.

Toth’s first statue was made from stone and on a California cliffside. Since then, he has built a total of 74 statues, at least one in each of the 50 states. He has teased that his next project will be along the Amazon River.

Today, he feels a strong connection to every state, country and continent on which he has ever stepped foot.

“This, Ocean City, is my hometown. Vienna is my hometown. Budapest is my hometown. Every place where I have created one of my statues or lived is my hometown,” he said. “I feel the cold of Alaska, I feel the heat of Florida because I’m a part of it.”

Moving around the country has led Toth to working in all sorts of weather.

Yudichak appears before Luzerne County Council urging infrastructure loan guarantee

State Sen. John Yudichak appeared before Luzerne County Council members remotely last week to personally seek their guarantee on a new infrastructure loan.

An estimated $55 million for county and municipal infrastructure projects is at stake, he said.

New state legislation customized solely for the county earmarks $3 million annually for 25 years from the casino-gambling Local Share Account (LSA) to repay debt required to secure the up-front infrastructure cash.

Financial institutions are seeking assurance the county would repay the debt if the Mohegan Sun Pocono casino in Plains Township unexpectedly closes down the road.

Yudichak, I-Swoyersville, told council members he is as frustrated as they are that lending institution attorneys want the county assurance for an improbable gaming industry shutdown.

“It is not going to happen, but that’s what lawyers do for a living,” he said, referring to a casino closure. “They want to make sure that every scenario is planned for.”

With 15 casinos that generated $4.83 billion in gross terminal gaming revenue last year, Pennsylvania is ranked as the second most profitable gaming state, just behind Nevada, Yudichak said.

Although individual casinos have closed across the country, no gaming state has ever pulled out of the casino business, he said. Pennsylvania would be compelled to attract another casino operator to Luzerne County if Mohegan Sun Pocono closed, he said.

Among casinos nationwide, Mohegan Sun Pocono is ranked 13th and has generated, on average, more than $10 million annually for the county LSA over the last ten years, he said. Under the new legislation, $3 million of that annual allocation would come off the top to cover the infrastructure program, while the rest would continue to fund local earmarks for a range of community purposes, he said.
