Record-high prices at the pump have some people changing their annual travel plans.
GOULDSBORO, Pa. — Close to $200 — that’s a number nobody wants to see when filling up the gas tank. You might budget that amount for a long weekend trip, but on Monday, at the Gouldsboro Travel Plaza, this is what drivers call Monday morning on the way to work.
“I remember I used to be able to fill my car with $60. Now my V-8 takes double that. So it’s going to be $120 to $130,” said George Ramos from Newfoundland.
The price at the pump has jumped for the fifth straight week, according to GasBuddy.com.
The average price in Pennsylvania is $4.77, according to AAA.
“It’s definitely hurting. I mean, that’s why we try not to use that car if we don’t have to.”
“I just feel like I’m wasting all my money on gas, money I could use to eat, to pay my bills,” said Gregory Benoit from Tobyhanna.
“I travel a lot for work, so I’m looking at double the cost everywhere I go. It sucks,” said Andrew Lencoski from Nanticoke.
Lencoski usually heads to Florida for Memorial Day Weekend. Not this year.
“Just staying in the area, maybe doing some hiking, trying not to drive as much as possible.”
He’s in good company; lots of people are planning to keep it local this year.
“I’m not going anywhere,” said Jacob Krisovitch from Covington Township.
“We’re trying not to do much other than stay home and maybe do a little barbecuing. That’s pretty much it,” Ramos said.
Nationwide, high gas prices aren’t keeping everybody at home. AAA predicts 8.3% more travelers this Memorial Day Weekend compared to last year.
If you have travel plans in June or July,…

NANTICOKE — The Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board ruled that Greater Nanticoke Area School Board and district administration did not violate the state Public Employee Relations Act in suspending and dismissing a teacher aide who took a leave of absence after the leave request was denied. The teacher was later re-instated without back pay following a separate arbitration hearing.
According to the written decision from the PLRB, the case centered on a Dec. 20, 2017 request by Pamela Aftewicz for an unpaid leave from March 21 through March 28, 2018. Superintendent Ronald Grevera granted that request, but the trip was canceled and Aftewicz worked the requested days.
On Oct. 23, 2018, Aftewicz submitted another request for unpaid leave for Dec. 6, 7, 10, 11 and 12 of 2018. She purchased airline tickets thinking the request would not be denied. But Grevera denied the request and Aftewicz was unable to get a refund for her ticket. Grevera warned her that if she left, he would recommend her termination to the school board for insubordination and job abandonment. She went on the trip and missed five days of work.
Grevera suspended her without pay Dec. 12, 2018 and recommended dismissal. The board voted to dismiss, without providing the employees name, at the Jan. 10, 2019 public meeting. The PLRB noted Aftewicz attended the meeting but left “immediately following the vote because she became upset.” The ruling includes a lengthy quote from Board President Tony Prushinski regarding his opinion that it was rude of people to leave school board meetings once they began.
As the Times Leader reported, Prushinski said “Do they have a right to walk out? Absolutely. But it is rude.” He added that he would always speak against such behavior when it occurs.
Three sets of twins — including a pair of brothers from Plains Twp. — will graduate Saturday from the Wilkes University Passan School of Nursing.
A mother-daughter duo from Nanticoke will also take the stage to get their diplomas and accept their nursing degrees.
Both are believed to be historic firsts at the school, which is holding its 75th annual spring commencement.
Twinning
Like most twins, Jake and Josh Brown from Plains Twp. say they’ve done most things in life together, so going to college together was nothing new for the 22-year-old Coughlin High School graduates.
“We ended up at Wilkes because it was in our backyard. It’s close to home,” Jake Brown said. “We found out about their nursing program and heard it was one of the best ones around here.”
Officials at Wilkes say this is the first time in the school’s history that three sets of twins will graduate from the same program. Saturday marks the school’s 75th annual spring commencement.
The six twins are among 86 graduates of the nursing program who will receive their bachelor’s degrees on Saturday.
In addition to the Browns, the other twins include Devon and Cassidy Catrambone, of Glenmoore near Philadelphia, and Molly and Emily Kiska, of Allentown.
“How would you feel about having your best friend with you all the time — all the way through school, and college too? Well what would you think about five best friends? That’s what happened to these three sets of twins — who just happened to enter the Passan School of Nursing in the same year,” Wilkes said in a press release about the unique nursing class. “While they come from different geographical areas, all six chose Wilkes because of the excellent nursing program and for the small class size.”
The six twins have become good friends because of the common trait they…

SEAFORD, Del.- Tuesday morning TidalHealth Nanticoke honored a little girl who passed away from cancer.
The hospital received a toy closet for kids, which is an expansion of the “Brooke’s Toy Closet” initiative that started in 2014 at the TidalHealth Peninsula Regional, in Salisbury.
Brooke Mulford was an 8- year-old girl who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of cancer, in 2009 when she was only 4-years-old, she endured numerous rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, several surgeries, two stem cell transplants, multiple bone marrow biopsies and blood transfusions. She was treated at several hospitals, including at TidalHealth.
Brooke ended up losing her battle to cancer in June of 2017.
During her fight with cancer, Brooke wanted to provide toys to other hospitalized children because she knew how it felt to receive toys herself during her hospital stays.
So, now with the toy closet expanding we’re told it’s going to support even more kids.
“When you’re able to give them something that will distract them something to put a smile on their face or can make a huge difference for them and it makes them think that the next time they come maybe it won’t be so scary,” Penny Short, President of TidalHealth Nanticoke, said.
TidalHealth workers and those who helped Brooke’s Toy Closet come to life gathered for a ribbon cutting to celebrate the expansion. Amy Mulford, Brooke’s mother, was also there.
Amy said this is the third toy closet that’s opened and all are in different states. She said Brooke would be thrilled to see another toy closet come to life and for Amy she said it means a lot as it gives her a reason to keep going.
“I feel like there has to be a reason my heart kept beating when Brooke’s stopped because…

To Be Eligible For a Free Rain Barrel, Participants Must Live in Any of 12 Specified Delaware Watersheds
In conjunction with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s month-long celebration of Earth Day, DNREC’s Division of Watershed Stewardship will host a rain barrel-building workshop on Saturday, April 9, at the Nanticoke River Marina, 26 Market Street, Blades, DE 19973.
Eligibility to participate in the workshop and receive a free rain barrel at the event is dependent on living in any of the following Delaware watersheds:
- Appoquinimink Watershed
- Broadkill Watershed
- Chester Watershed
- Choptank Watershed
- Chesapeake Bay Watershed/Basin (Anywhere within this basin)
- Christina Watershed
- Inland Bays Watershed
- Little Assawoman Bay Watershed
- Nanticoke Watershed
- Pocomoke Watershed
- St. Jones River Watershed
- Wicomico Watershed
For potential participants to identify the watershed they live in, and confirm their eligibility to receive a free rain barrel from DNREC, visit DelawareWatersheds.org and follow the instructions for “Find Your Watershed.” Eligible Delawareans can then proceed to register for the workshop. The first 20 eligible participants to register for and attend the workshop will receive a free 55-gallon rain barrel system to be built during the workshop.
During the workshop, DNREC will provide free kits that convert plastic drums donated by Painted Stave Distilling of Smyrna into rain barrels. Workshop participants will be given an overview of rain barrels including their benefits, proper use, assembly, and maintenance. Among the benefits are rain barrels’ ability to store rainwater from rooftops that would otherwise be lost to runoff and diverted to storm drains and streams, thus helping improve the health of local waterways; and saving homeowners money on water use.
Staff from DNREC’s Nonpoint Source Program will lead the workshop. Participants may arrive at any time between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for the workshop….
