Duck Hunters Rescued from Nanticoke River

SEAFORD, Del. – A group of duck hunters are recovering after they found themselves stuck in the middle of the Nanticoke River in Seaford. First responders from multiple agencies responded to the incident that sent one person to the hospital.

The Seaford Volunteer Fire Department says four young men were out duck hunting Monday morning when they got stuck in ice. One person was taken to the hospital and the others were not injured.

The four young hunters called the Seaford Fire Department, once they realized they were stuck in the marsh. Two men were on the boat and the other two were on the duck blind.

“The rescue boats from Blades and Seaford were able to make way to guys on the river doing some duck hunting, and they were able to assist in pulling the boat to the Seaford boat ramp,” said Seaford Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief, Jason Hudson.

First responders were called to the scene at 8:50 a.m. and the entire rescue was complete by 10:18 a.m.

“This is kind of rare, and the weather is kind of rare also, so we don’t get a lot of this, but we do have the gear and equipment to make those types of rescues,” said Ron Marvel, public information officer from the Seaford Volunteer Fire Department.

Seaford, Blades, Laurel and Sharptown were involved with the rescue as well as helicopters from Delaware State Police.

“Department of Natural Resources was able to make it on foot, make access to the duck blind, where there were also two subjects that they assisted in getting to safety. It sounded like they used some shorelines to make it a safe manner to get them up to the ground,” said Hudson.

Everyone made it out of the water safely, and the hunter who went to the hospital is expected to be…

Nanticoke man arrested after second pursuit ends in park

PLYMOUTH TWP. — A Nanticoke man was arraigned Saturday on allegations he initiated two pursuits with state police at Wilkes-Barre with the last chase ending in a park.

Joseph John Clark, 39, of East Main Street, first fled a trooper during a traffic stop on West End Road in Hanover Township, and about one hour later attempted to flee another stop damaging three cruisers, according to court records.

The pursuits and Clark’s arrest happened Thursday.

According to the criminal complaints:

A state police trooper stopped Clark on West End Road at 3:23 p.m. During the traffic stop, Clark identified himself as Joseph Bass and gave an incorrect date of birth.

Clark refused to exit his vehicle and sped away at a high rate of speed nearly striking the trooper, the complaint says.

Clark allegedly passed several vehicles while driving on the berm of the roadway.

As Clark sped away, state police learned Clark’s cellular phone number.

A trooper sent Clark a text message using another name asking to meet at the Canal Street Park in West Nanticoke, Plymouth Township.

Clark agreed to meet at 4 p.m.

When Clark pulled into the park driving a 1990 Dodge Ram pickup truck, he stated, “This is a set up” when he observed state police cruisers approaching him.

Clark attempted to flee the park as troopers conducted several PIT maneuvers to stop him, the complaint says.

After approximately two minutes of attempting to escape the maneuvers, Clark abandoned his truck when it became disabled. He was tackled after a 60-yard foot chase, according to the complaints.

A search warrant was executed on Clark’s truck resulting in the discovery of a 9mm semi-automatic pistol loaded with 10 rounds, the complaints say.

Clark allegedly told troopers a friend…

Nanticoke man arrested after the second chase ended in the park

PLYMOUTHTWP. — A Nanticoke man was charged on Saturday with two pursuits with state police in Wilkes-Barre, alleging that the final pursuit ended in the park.

According to court records, Joseph John Clark, 39, on East Main Street, first escaped from a soldier during a traffic outage on West End Road in Hanover Township, trying to escape from another stop about an hour later. Damaged three cruisers.

The chase and Clark’s arrest took place on Thursday.

According to the criminal accusation:

State police soldiers stopped Clark on West End Road at 3:23 pm. During the traffic outage, Clark confirmed that he was a Joseph Bus and gave him the wrong date of birth.

Clark refused to get out of his car and speeded up at high speeds that almost hit the trooper, complaints say.

Clark is said to have overtaken several cars while driving a berm on the road.

As Clark rushed away, state police learned of Clark’s cell phone number.

Trooper sent a text message to Clark using a different name, asking him to meet at Canal Street Park in West Nanti Cork, Plymouth Township.

Clark agreed to meet at 4 pm

When Clark drove a 1990 Dodge Ram pickup truck and pulled it into the park, he said, “This is a setup” when he observed a state police cruiser approaching him.

Clark complains that he tried to escape from the park when the soldiers performed some PIT operations to stop him.

After attempting to escape the maneuver for about two minutes, Clark abandoned the truck when it became invalid. According to the complaint, he was tackled after a 60-yard foot chase.

Complaints say a search warrant was executed on Clark’s truck and a 9mm semi-automatic pistol loaded with 10 bullets was found.

Clark told soldiers that his friend…

Firefighters battling more structure fires during cold spell

Crews in Luzerne County have been battling blazes in the blistering cold. Responding to calls one after another, firefighters have had no time to catch their breath.

NANTICOKE, Pa. — Colder weather has meant more calls to the Nanticoke City Fire Department.

“The past couple weeks with the sub-zero freezing temperatures, there has been a noticeable increase in structure fires in the area,” said Dane Aukstakalnis, a Nanticoke firefighter.

The department’s eleven paid firefighters and numerous volunteers have been busy. Responding to nearly 30 fires across Luzerne County in just the last month and a half, they’ve been battling the cold as much as the flames.

“In Newport recently, three out of the four hydrants that were hit were frozen,” said Firefighter David Wojciechowicz. “So it’s always in the back of my mind if we’re going to a fire, knowing where the secondary hydrant is.”

They’re also looking out for their health. Their suits and extra layers only protect firefighters from the cold for a short time.

“You’re in a fire, then all of a sudden you come out, and you’re wet,” Aukstakalnis said. “The coats and everything being wet, they almost freeze instantly, but with the adrenaline going, you don’t always realize that it’s dropping your body temperature.”

Chief Mark Boncal said the cold means more warm-up breaks for his crew and a bigger need for backup.

“You get a guy that’s spent after two cylinders, and he comes out, we need to have extra manpower in place to replace him,” Boncal said.

But with fewer volunteers in Luzerne County and across the country, crews are finding themselves shorthanded.

“We had the fire down on Church Street, two o’clock in the afternoon. It was myself and the three other duty guys for the first ten minutes trying to suppress…

Nanticoke police arrest man on arson, assault charges

NANTICOKE — A Nanticoke man was arrested after he allegedly ignited papers on fire during a domestic disturbance inside his residence on West Green Street on Saturday.

Macarton Norman Pierre, 31, was arraigned by District Judge Joseph Spagnuolo in Plains Township on four counts of simple assault, two counts of arson and a single count of criminal mischief. He was jailed without bail at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility as Spagnuolo deemed him a danger to society and a flight risk.

Pierre was wanted by the county Sheriff’s Department when he was arrested Saturday.

According to the criminal complaint:

Police responded to the West Green Street residence for a domestic disturbance at about 11:38 a.m.

As officers encountered Pierre and a woman on the front porch, they noticed a smoky haze through the open front door.

The woman told police Pierre arrived home and began smashing items inside the residence. Officers noticed overturned furniture, broken doors and holes in walls, the complaint says.

Police in the complaint reported the woman claimed Pierre placed papers on a glass stove top and turned on the burners, igniting the papers and filling the residence up with smoke.

A roommate suffered a burn to her right hand when she attempted to extinguish the fire.

The woman claimed Pierre attempted to burn the house down with two adults and two children, 8 and 11, inside, the complaint says.

Court records say a judge’s warrant was issued for Pierre when he failed to appear Nov. 29 for a preliminary hearing on drunken driving charges that were filed by state police at Hazleton. He is also facing drug possession charges by…
