NANTICOKE — Local restaurateur Rob Friedman, of Friedman Hospitality Group, has purchased his eighth restaurant — Giuseppe’s in Nanticoke and will rename the eatery Grico’s South.

Friedman said the restaurant is currently closed and he plans to have it reopened by Dec. 1.

“We are pleased to purchase this restaurant and serve the greater Nanticoke area,”Friedman said. “We will reopen under the name Grico’s South. Grico’s in Exeter has been around for more than 80 years and we plan to offer many of the items featured at Grico’s and also many of the favorites that have been offered at Giuseppe’s.”

Friedman said he has promoted Jared Kopetchne to the position of executive chef at Giuseppe’s. Kopetchne had been a sous chef at the Beaumont Inn in Dallas. He said Sheila Humphrey will be the general manager of the restaurant.

“It’s exciting to be able to offer opportunities for our sous chefs to become executive chefs,” Friedman said.

Friedman said Giuseppe’s will be open Tuesday through Saturday.

He said he purchased the restaurant from Steve and Adeline Smith, who Friedman said have decided to relocate.

“The Smiths approached me to tell me they were relocating and offered this opportunity,” Friedman said. “We are excited that the staff of Giuseppe’s — servers, back-servers and bartenders — have told us they are excited to work at…

Indian mission school dedicated – 47abc

MILLSBORO, Del. – State representatives along with members from the Nanticoke Indian Tribe gathered at the Nanticoke Indian heritage center Monday morning to dedicate the building as a historical landmark

We’re told the center used to be a one-room school in the ’60s dedicated to educating Nanticoke Indian Tribe children. However, after it was closed it was used as a heritage and educational center.

The tribe has been working closely with the state to bring light to these historical landmarks that tell the Nanticoke’s story. Members of the tribe say it means a lot to continue to be recognized as an important part of Delaware’s history and culture. “They want to educate the public on how important their presence here after all these centuries meant and what they had to go through just to have their children educated,” says Steven Marz, Director of the state public archives and state archivist.

Meanwhile, Chief Natosha Norwood Carmine tells us, “It’s important to them to know that properly recognized by a marker place here on the property because it gives the meaning that is visible, it is tangible.” She adds, “I just think of our ancestors and if they’re looking down how proud they must be, our elders who couldn’t be here because of the weather. I know they’ll look up and see this on the channels that they see that they’ll be proud and pleased that we were able to accomplish this.”

Chief Carmine also tells 47 ABC, now that the building has been dedicated, tribe members want to build onto it and hold more events for tribe members and community members to continue educating them on their culture and history.

Nanticoke tribe mark Native American Day in Millsboro

The smell of fry bread and lima bean succotash filled the air at the Nanticoke Indian Museum grounds as tribal dancers, storytellers and drummers interpreted Native American culture last weekend. More than 175 people attended Native American Day, which is always held in early November in Millsboro.

“We do not choose to be storytellers, we are chosen,” intoned Nanticoke interpreter Ragghi Rain. “Our stories are sacred,” she told an assembled crowd of about 100 people as the storytelling program began last Saturday. “Our stories are the truth from what we have lived.”

The Nanticoke people are a Native American Algonquin people who have inhabited Delaware and Maryland for many centuries. They were first encountered by Captain John Smith in 1608 and were originally met with musket fire. The Nanticoke replied with baskets of food, and left warm fires and beads and other gifts as a sign of good faith.

On Nov. 15, the tribe will place a historic marker at the site of the historic Nanticoke Indian School, which now serves as an education center, and at the Nanticoke Indian Association Center, just a mile farther down Route 24. The Delaware Nature Conservancy (TNC) has also deeded and will also provide a land gift of 31 acres to help expand the two Millsboro-area facilities.

Sterling Street, 78, who is one of the local Nanticoke tribal elders, said, “We are raising funds during our capital campaign to add on to our museum here and our tribal center down the road to have a welcome center and a gift shop. We will have a training room…

Perdue Farms awards Chesapeake Conservancy with $100,000 donation

The Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation, the charitable giving arm of Perdue Farms, has awarded Chesapeake Conservancy, a Maryland-based environmental non-profit, with a donation of $100,000 to help fund construction of an outdoor natural amphitheater at the new Oyster House Park in Seaford, Del., at the site of the old J.B. Robinson Oyster House along the Seaford River Walk on the Nanticoke River.

The Perdue gift is part of the company’s “Delivering Hope To Our Neighbors” initiative focused on improving quality of life and building strong communities.

“We are so grateful to the Perdue Foundation for supporting this vision,” said Randall Larrimore, Chesapeake Conservancy board chair. “To construct the Oyster House Park, we partnered with the city and others to provide public access to the Nanticoke River, one of the Chesapeake’s most pristine rivers, and worked together to create a beautiful place for the community to gather and recreate. Thanks to the generosity of Perdue, one day we will also enjoy a performance at a new outdoor natural amphitheater. We believe we are helping to build a stronger community and a vibrant downtown.”

The outdoor natural amphitheater will be built into the slope of the property accented with native plants. There will be seating for 75 people in the amphitheater and room on the lawn for an additional 200 people. This will also serve as a community outdoor classroom, gathering space for performances and erosion control to address runoff from steep banks. The city plans to remove the impervious road surface and support best management practice implementation to reduce runoff from nearby streets. New turnarounds will allow access to the property and support maximum available open space for pedestrian access.

“At Perdue Farms, we are proud to support the Chesapeake Conservancy and City of Seaford’s vision to…

H.S. Football: Nanticoke Area defeats Schuylkill Valley for Eastern Conference 3A title

NANTICOKE — Overcoming the early November chill in the air, the Nanticoke Area Trojans held on to defeat the visiting Schuylkill Valley Panthers 21-14 to take home the title on their home field in the Eastern Conference Class 3A championship game on Friday night.

With the triumph, Nanticoke, which started its season 0-4, finished 5-6. Schuylkill Valley ended 2-9 with its sixth consecutive loss.

Shaking off a slow start that saw Nanticoke Area quarterback Payton Kepp throw a costly interception, Trojans came roaring back with their powerful rushing attack on offense to start the game’s scoring just eight seconds into the second quarter.

Kepp took the quarterback sneak and barreled his way into the end zone from 2 yards out to give the Trojans a 7-0 advantage with 11:52 remaining in the opening half. Nanticoke Area’s next score came with only 50.1 seconds left before the halftime, as sophomore tailback Zach Fox scampered into the end zone from 3 yards away to give the Trojans a 13-0 lead.

Just when the contest looked like it was heading towards blowout territory, Schuylkill Valley showed tremendous resiliency.

The Panthers connected on an improbable fourth-and-7 from their own 37-yard line senior signal caller Drew Campbell found Colby Crills down the right sidelines for a 63-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 13-7 with 10:36 left in the third quarter.

However, Nanticoke would come right back to snatch the game’s momentum when Fox scored his second rushing touchdown of the night, this time from 5 yards out, to increase the Trojans lead to 21-7 with only 1:51 remaining in the third period.

In the fourth quarter, the Schuylkill Valley put quite a scare into Nanticoke Area when junior quarterback Michael Goad converted a fourth-and-4, connecting…

Future gas-to-fuel plant welcome news for region

Editorials

Nov 3, 2021

We are glad to learn that Nacero Inc. is building a natural gas-to-fuel plant in Newport Township, near Nanticoke.

According to an Associated Press article in Monday’s Sun-Gazette, the $6 billion project will create 450 jobs at the plant, after its construction creates hundreds if not thousands of jobs. These jobs have the potential to be family-supporting careers and the Nanticoke area is not an unreasonable commute from southeastern Lycoming County.

The company plans to build nine such plants across the country, with construction of the first underway in Texas. A study by that project by the University of Texas expects the project to have a “$25 billion ripple effect.”

It means more prospective buyers for people selling homes from southeastern Lycoming County through Columbia and Luzerne counties, more customers for restaurants and stores, more taxpayers on county and school district rolls and more neighbors joining our churches and community groups.

It means growth.

Beyond the jobs created, the plant will use a catalytic process to convert natural gas rather than more traditional processes. The catalytic process release fewer pollutants. The plant also will convert methane, itself a pollutant, into natural gas and then into fuel. Thomas Tureen, chairman of Nacero’s board, noted that the gasoline produced also releases less ground-level ozone into the air.

It all illustrates the role natural gas plays as a bridge, a source of energy that is cleaner than coal and oil and can be consumed while other alternatives to energy, such as solar, wind and hydroelectric are better developed to be realistic alternatives.

This project is progress — both on the environmental front and in terms of…
