Feds Still Offering $5,000 Reward for Broome County Eagle Killer

Investigators are continuing their effort to find the person who fatally shot a bald eagle while it was in a tree north of Binghamton.

A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokeswoman said the special agent handling the case of last spring’s killing of the eagle in the town of Nanticoke has not received “any credible leads.”

The bird apparently had been in a tree near 1022 Nanticoke Road when someone shot it on April 3. Investigators determined the eagle died as the result of a gunshot wound sustained from a high-caliber rifle projectile.

A reward of up to $5,000 was posted for information leading to those responsible for the eagle’s death.

People with information about the shooting may contact Fish and Wildlife Service special agent Ryan Bessey at (716) 691-3635.

Bald eagles are federally protected by Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Violators could face fines of up to $100,000 and up to one year in prison.

H.S. Football: Nanticoke Area’s defense holds strong to edge Susquehanna

NANTICOKE — Nanticoke Area’s defense came up with a fourth-down stop late in the fourth quarter and a missed extra point earlier in the game helped the Trojans earn their first win of the season, defeating Susquehanna 7-6 on Friday night.

Zack Fox’s 60-yard touchdown run in the first quarter proved to be the difference, and the Trojans’ defense closed out the game in the fourth.

With 6:11 left on the clock and the ball on the Susquehanna 3-yard line, the Trojans decided to go for it on fourth down to build on their one-point lead. After struggling to stop the Trojans run game throughout the night, the Sabers stood their ground and pushed Zach Fox back a yard as Nanticoke turned the ball over on downs.

Susquehanna took possession 96 yards away from the end zone with both team looking for that elusive first win of the season. Susquehanna would convert its first two fourth-down attempts on the drive but ultimately fell short as Colton Stone’s fourth-and-10 pass to J.J. Rosa was out of reach.

Fox got the Trojans on board on their second offensive play of the game. Fox would find intermittent success through the rest of the night as he failed to reach the line of scrimmage on eight rushing attempts in the game but still finished with 105 yards.

The Trojans changed up their running this week with a two-headed attack with Fox and Mykal Julian. The tandem would finish with a combined 226 yards on the ground.

The Sabers offense struggled in the first half as they would only run two plays in the opposition’s half. Late in the half Susquehanna looked poised to knot the score up heading into the break, but a Rosa fumble ended…
